FWIW Justin Vernon (the guy behind Bon Iver) generally uses his voice as an instrument more often than not, putting more focus on finding words that musically sound good together than ones that can lay out an easy narrative. His songs, at least in his newer material like this, can seem pretty abstract as a result. A lot of his music is really relaxing and calming. He talked about what the song meant in an interview, here's a quote: ""Holocene is a bar in Portland, Ore., but it's also the name of a geologic era, an epoch if you will. It's a good example of how all the songs are all meant to come together as this idea that places are times and people are places and times are... people? [Laughs.] They can all be different and the same at the same time. Most of our lives feel like these epochs. That's kind of what that song's about. "Once I knew I was not magnificent." Our lives feel like these epochs, but really we are dust in the wind. But I think there's a significance in that insignificance that I was trying to look at in that song."" I enjoyed your reaction, and the video really is beautiful, no shame in focusing a bit on that.

That was heavy. "And at once I knew I was not magnificent". That's when the good stuff comes to you and you reallly can see for miles and miles then. Deep lyrics. I have never heard this song before but I'm going to add it to my playlist. Thanks dude!

That whole video was shot along the south coast of Iceland. The basalt columns are right outside Vik, and diamond beach is very nearby. One of my all time favorite places to visit. The song is great but the scenery is absolutely captivating.

6:50 no but ironically they do genuinely round up birds called puffins who wander into town instead of flying into the ocean so the locals collect them, bring them to another cliff, and chuck them over the edge. Its to help the birds start their migration and not get confused by the lights of town. There's a really cool video of Gordon Ramsey shitting himself on the edge of a cliff trying to catch them with butterfly nets lmao

You need to learn Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver lead singer) backstory. He was at his lowest point when he was making this song, this album. He had trouble with his band, his partner, and himself. He was lost and broken when he isolated himself in a cabin in the woods for a few months during the winder season. This album is an experience. Highly Recommend.

The most gorgeous setting 😍 If you can believe it, Iceland is even more beautiful in person - it's frustrating trying to photograph it and just getting nowhere near what's in front of you. The biggest chunk of one thing in my heritage is Icelandic, and I finally got to go there when I was 40. It's amazing, I think everyone should go at least once - it's like nowhere else on Earth. 💚 (PS, if you want to say it the faaahncy way, it's pronounced Bone ee-VAIR 👍😊)

I've always thought this song was about an out of body experience following a car crash. In the chorus he talks about being "above the highway aisle" and I think "jagged vacance thick with ice" could be a reference to an icy road. The verses talk about specific events like Christmas night and Halloween and it seems like he's recalling different memories from throughout his life, like a life flashing before his eyes kind of thing. And then he realizes how comically insignificant he and his experiences are with "and at once I knew I was not magnificent". I know it makes it sound like such a bleak song when I interpret it that way but it's always really put me at peace.

Lol I feel the same way! It's a beautiful combination of the simplicity and Majesty of God's creation with a beautiful melody. I have to look for the lyrics because I could not understand them. Very peaceful and serene. It did bother me that the little guy was alone though. What was the purpose for him to walk so far? It was missing his destination. Maybe it was Heaven. Beautiful scenery.

I to LOVE this song and the video. Understanding the meaning of the title "Holocene", a geological term, makes the video more understandable. See below: HOLOCENE Adjective Relating to or denoting the present epoch, which is the second epoch in the Quaternary period and followed the Pleistocene. Noun the present epoch or the system of deposits laid down during this time. This period started about 10,000 years ago. Hope this helps.

It was filmed in Iceland. The song has many deeper meanings, but Holocene is the current geographical epoch, which has been Earth as we know it for more than 11,000 years. Iceland is an ever evolving landscape, and it is visually perfect to express the emotion, that we are "not magnificent" (compared to what nature puts before us)
