I’ve been posting this recommendation as well to platforms across the democracy coalition… this song needs to be the anthem for the movement. Its perfect… take the flag and the word “freedom” back from the cosplay fascists and back into the hands of ppl who actually give a damn about this country.
Dude. Like, seriously dude. Moved to tears. This really underscores the gravity of these moments.

Oh we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again, Shouting the battle cry of freedom, And we'll rally from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain, Shouting the battle cry of freedom. The Union forever, hurrah! boys, hurrah! Down with the traitors, up with the stars; While we rally round the flag, boys, we rally once again, Shouting the battle cry of freedom! Oh we're springing to the call for three hundred thousand more, Shouting the battle cry of freedom! And we'll fill the vacant ranks with a million freemen more, Shouting the battle cry of freedom. We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave, Shouting the battle cry of freedom! And although he may be poor, he shall never be a slave, Shouting the battle cry of freedom! Oh we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again, Shouting the battle cry of freedom, And we'll rally from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain, Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

The delicate and imperfect delivery of the melody is a perfect metaphor for our union. It is not ironclad, it is blemished with missteps and mistakes throughout. But, forever we shall love her and continue the never ending march to embrace our “better angels”
@rickymarvig55962 ай бұрын
Very ironic (for me) to hear Bon Iver cover this song. I have been thinking a lot about this song lately. The House of Reps singing this song near the end of the movie Lincoln. It’s link to the Ken Burns “Civil War” documentary. Remembering meeting McPherson and hearing him discuss his book. “Down with the traitors an up with the stars”. A song for our time, though I doubt Mr Lincoln would recognize the Republican Party today
@aaronimpossible2 ай бұрын
McPherson named his book after this song because both side sing this song, with different lyrics.

George Frederick Root (1820-1895), an American composer and professional songwriter, wrote The Battle Cry of Freedom in 1862 during the American Civil War in response to President Abraham Lincoln's call for more volunteers to join the Union Army. Root composed the song in a single day for a Chicago war rally in July 1862 to support Lincoln's request, and it was first performed at the rally on July 24 and again on July 26. Abraham Lincoln was a member of the Republican Party, the Party of Abolition, the anti-Slavery Party & pro Freedom Party that supported & continues to support the first amendment, free speech, the right to question authority, elections, the government, the right to tell the truth, the right to life, liberty & pursuit of happiness, the right to question any & everything.

Do not call yourself an abolitionist or a Unionist unless you support the complete and total liberation of all people (including Palestinians) from the racist power structures (including Israel) that subjugate them
