They had actually recorded two albums prior, but "Slippery When Wet" was definitely their breakout one. "Livin' On a Prayer" and "You Give Love a Bad Name" are a couple more great songs from it. Jon Bon Jovi does a great job on vocals, and Richie Sambora kills it with his guitar. Sambora unfortunately left the group a few years ago, but he still accomplished quite a bit with the group.

I think the first line "It's all the same. Only the names will change", is in reference to the different city names that change. This is one of my favorite Bon Jovi songs. The song's title pays homage to Jon's admiration for Old West heroes, and how he identifies with them as being hated and loved at the same time ("wanted dead or alive", so to speak). During an interview on Inside the Actors Studio, Jon said he got the inspiration for the song early one morning when he could not sleep while riding in a tour bus. The "lifestyle of every rock band" was similar to that of outlaws in that each was, "a young band of thieves, riding into town, stealing the money, the girls, and the booze before the sun came up.

More fun facts? 😁 This song was written when the guys still lived at home. This one, at Richies house. This and living on a prayer came together quite quickly. The recording process, not so much..... They kept doing take after take and couldn't get the vibe they were looking for. They decided to take a break, and hit the streets of Vancouver, where they were recording. Being the gentlemans club Capitol of Canada at the time, they hit some up, grabbed some drinks, and got their buzzes on. When they returned to the studio fueled by their alcohol induced emotions, the very. first. take. was what they were looking for. That is what we are listening to here. 🤘🤘

My favorite Bon Jovi song, and my daughter Jordan's first requested album----she was 5. She & the little neighbor girls used to sing "You give love a bad name" in the back yard". We called them the Bon Jovi Pre-Pubescent Memorial Choir. It was hilarious to hear their little, girly voices shouting, "shot thru the heart, and you're to blame, honey, you give love (pause) a BAD Name." Our little girl group is so grown up now. My two are 36 and 37. Whew. Anyway, your interpretation of the song is right on the money. Life on the road is brutal. Especially for people with families. Jon Bon Jovi has been married for 31 years to Dorothea, who teaches karate and runs her own karate school. They have 4 kids, and I've never heard a single rumor of infidelity there. Good people.

And India, before the electronic age, bands had to tour non-stop. Journey toured 9 years straight...no breaks. If they stopped touring, they were forgotten. Times are different now and I think that’s why music sucks. Artists don’t have to fight for it.

@Kelly Johnson very few ugly musicians...maybe that's because the ones the record execs could see as hearthrobs would make it big. Looks do matter in that industry but so does a certain something...charisma I guess. Tough business. You had to have it all back in the day.
@dipsydoodle7988
@dipsydoodle7988 4 жыл бұрын
@Kelly Johnson I agree it wasn't the case for all of them. I wouldn't put MV in that category because they were not a rock band. Even in the 80s artists were being "created." They were created for a very specific reason as well as a specific audience. 70s and 80s rock fans could see past looks, but the ones that looked good definitely had a better chance. To be "ugly" and successful in that industry, it happens, sure. But I just think that it was more likely to happen if you had that certain something.
@dipsydoodle7988
@dipsydoodle7988 4 жыл бұрын
@Kelly Johnson so true. I am keeping the faith for some kind of revival. I'm hopeful because i feel a lot of these reactors are opening the eyes of a generation that didn't get to hear what music an artists were like. Maybe that appreciation will inspire others. One can hope.

There are three other songs/music videos about "life on the road" that you might want to react to. One of them is for the song (no music video), "Turn The Page", by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band. Another is for the music video for "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock And Roll)", by AC/DC, when Bon Scott was the lead vocalist. The third one is for the 1970s music video (then known as promotional film clips) for "We're An American Band", by Grand Funk Railroad (aka "Grand Funk").

I was ten years ago when I first heard this song and I think it had been out for only six months or so. In all honesty I have no idea what I first thought about this song. But I know I loved it.

Bon Jovi was my first Stadium Rock concert! I was 13 years old and Skid Row opened up for them. My mom waited in line for hours for the tickets for us. (my older sister and our 2 teenage cousins) Imagine 4 girls from 13-19 yrs old in our ripped acid washed jeans and black concert tees. Mom hooked us up too - we had 3rd row seats. It remains one of the best music memories I have. So good!

I was a teenager when this came out... They hit it big pretty fast, and this was about the life of touring... They ride a tour bus (steel horse) from city to city and no matter how tired they are, or if they are sick or not they are expected to perform because its another show. They get homesick, deal with their demons such as alcohol and such.. This song is all about the struggle of being on the road touring.. and the demands that puts on the band as people... It was a very touching song when it came out, because there were so many bands that were feeling the same way.. it honestly changed the view us fans had on the bands.. made us realize how much they sacrifice to provide us the awesome show we got.. very humbling song from an artists point of view.

Jon Bon Jovi did an interview talking about the song. He said when you watch the video and listen to the Lyrics it’s describing the band at that point in their careers. They almost broke up at that point. He said they were fighting so bad they each had to have a bodyguard to keep them separated from one another because all they wanted to do is fight each other at that point, due to the stresses and pressures of touring constantly. Best Wishes 💐

Quite like Jon Bon Jovi as a person. This is a favorite tune from the band - how outlaws end up. There seems to be a theme going here! Of all things, this song made me think of "All the Way to Memphis" by Mott the Hoople. Same idea, different emotional tone.

As a 30+ year fan of Bon Jovi, it always irked me when people called him "Bon Jovi" all the time (back in the day). For the exact reason that people wouldn't know the difference. His name is JON, folks!

I am so happy you found Jon Bon Jovi. When this song came out, I was a run away. Living on the streets. Hiding from an abusive step mother, and a father, who denied me. I felt "wanted. Dead or alive" This was my song. "its all the same. Only the names will change. everyday, seems we wasted away. I KNOW THE PLACE WHERE THE FACES ARE SO COLD! I WOULD TRAVEL ALL NIGHT TO GET BACK HOME! (my grandmas. where I was LOVED!) ANd I listened to it on my walk man everyday! lol The whole record, is full of great songs. But this one was my theme song!
