Hi Dan, yes I encourage my students to emulate violinists of their same body type and build. You can learn a lot about little things you have to do to compensate for certain body issues like a short pinky or a large hands or square shoulders etc. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! Im comming off of a bareback kick with my two violins. I still have.my everest plastic shoulder rest; all i do is ball up a sock and tape it to one end. It works for me. Then i stick felt disks to my chin rest at the edge and cover with ace type bandage. Its cheep, effective and grips my chin well. The only thing i dont like is that it locks up my whole head and i feel like i have a cast on. But it is necessasary in order to have a graceful vibrato. Ive seen Ostrach play his violin almost completly on edge and would assume this is so he doesnt blind the fellow to his left. Thankyou for an amazing vidio. I will consider the Bonmusica if other methods fail. My dream shoulder rest is the Libero but its so expensive and i dont know what height to order. And theres the fact that no one in my area sells them so i can try one out for fit finsh and comfort! Its like having a beartrap around your neck! Thanks for showing the Bon Musica shoulder rest. I will be open minded about it and may consider it as time goes on. First I will try a chamois over the chin rest that may give the grip I need without a huge outlay. Bless you i wish i was near arizona so i could drop in and talk with you. Many thanks!😅

Hey there! I am very much in favor of rigging up ANYTHING that will work, as a temporary measure, as you learn what your needs are. But I will give you 2 bits of information that I hope will steer you in the right direction. Number 1) The quest for a good ergonomic setup STARTS with the CHINREST, and ends with a shoulder rest decision. So, FIRST you need to find the chinrest style that fits your jaw, and get the appropriate height. (the height needs to fill any space from the top of the violin to your jaw, with the violin sitting on your collarbone) Number 2) You want to avoid the feeling of EVER being locked in any way on violin, on any body part, but ESPECIALLY on the neck/head. It's just asking for an injury or soreness, or god forbid, surgery. So, I hope you can take that bit of info and continue your pursuit! And YES< be creative! I've had people use VELCRO before. (not my first choice....but hey....)

Hi Juan, if you can get private lessons NOW, and if you can find a good teacher, I think EVERY beginner would benefit from private lessons. So if it is an option for you, I highly recommend that you go ahead and start. It makes a huge difference to establish good habits, and beginners usually do several things wrong that they are unaware of, and a second pair of eyes and ears really helps. BEST OF LUCK to you!

I know this is an old video but was going crazy about my setup without spending even more money on chinrests because I’m built almost just like you with muscly sloping shoulders. I honey thought I was getting the wrong size or needed a different side clamping one. I switched to the wave models you reviewed but was sad my violin was slipping down when trying to play on the e and a strings. I’ve had my bon musica for about a year and didn’t even know about the screws on the backside, I thought they messed up on gluing the pad on it! Thanks sooo much you’ve made me, my violin, and wallet very happy! ❤️ 🎶 🎻

Great 3 videos! It helped me a lot with my Bon Musica shoulder rest fine tuning it to where it needed to be. Thank you so much. In terms of positioning the feet/claws on the violin, I use the varnished markings on the ribs of the violin as landmarks to position my shoulder rest claws consistently at the same spot. The natural varnished grain markings on the sides/ribs of the violin make it easy to do this if you study your particular violin's markings.

My Chinese knockoff Shoulder Rest (Yinfente=$27) adjusts similarly to your instructions, Thankyou. However I continue to have posture & neck-sighting angle issues due to my total blindness left eye which causes me to view over the bridge of my nose from right eye only, therefore I need to make "alignment adjustments" moreso pointing scroll forward & tweaking my body. I'm curious if you've had left-eye-blind students & your possible compensating techniques? The bon musica actually sorta gets in way tho sorta holds onto forearm in front of elbow joint when I hold the fiddle in my forearm down towards my waist. As low as far as my lengthy right bowing wrist will reach. It adds stage presence, but so much disciplined posture😮 I believe in sharing all (good? Lol) things with my mentors. Thankyou very very much for all your critiques, extremely useful time after time. Signed: Pro Stage Musician ; Beginner +/- Fiddle-ist. Peace, Love, Joy, safety to you & your Loved Ones ( Gotta get back to your HOW TO PRACTICE EFFICIENTLY USING RHYTHMS ..& practice your LEARN VIBRATO technique.😊 My fingerboard wrist is still connected somewhat directly to my bowing arm, lol/Smile

Hey Daniel, I have the solution to your left eye blindness, or any blindness: PLAY EYES CLOSED. Seriously.....violin is SUCH a tactile/ear instrument.....you can feel and hear every nuance......eyes get in the way. ZERO professionals watch the violin or bow when they play......or very rarely. Some blind violinists and fiddlers are among the best. So, assume you believe me. Let's move to HOW: Find my video on "INtonation a Simple Approach", and also "Suzuki Tonalizations". This is your golden ticket to playing without your eyes.....because it teaches your ears to be sensitive to RINGY NOTES. Start simple: like, learn to just play your 3rd fingers, finding the ringy notes, NO PEEKING. And go from there. I promise you, with a little work, you will not need to look at all. Good luck!

Dear Red, you are a great teacher. I am an old beginner, and the tip you said about holding the bow parallel to the bridge by moving your arm and hand as if you're going to reach for something on a table is fantastic. It's helped me improve that aspect. not perfect yet, but getting there. The reason I'm putting this comment here is that I was constantly fighting with the violin and Kun shoulder rest but was never able to support the violin properly (that's for me - it's a good product too). And you can't work on step two if you can't get step one right - holding the instrument. I took your advice, bought the Bon Musica and am now able (with lots of tries and adjustments) to comfortably support it. I think I must have a short neck because I need a small pad on my collar bone to keep the back of the violin - under the end button - from cutting in. But it really solves the proper support problem wonderfully. Sorry for the length of this comment. Just wanted to thank you.

Hi Iggy, I'm so glad to read of your victory with the Bon Musica! The fact you have to put a pad for your collarbone is a GOOD SIGN. that means your violin is riding nice and low, next to your body instead of being jacked up. I think you are on the right path! Good luck!

This week, I made a sling for my violin. The Bon Musica was hurting where it made contact with my clothing and no adjustments helped. I tried to play without a shoulder rest, but when downshifting to 1st position my thumb would pull the violin away. I made a ling that kept the violin close to my neck, kept it from sliding on my shoulder and kept the front from going more than 30 degrees off dead level. I found I could leverage the Wittner chin rest with my chin to change the angle of my violin. I don't stress with my head when I play. I can look around and the violin doesn't move. The Bon Musica will go to eBay for some lucky bidder. For the first time, I could play without the SR. Strange, huh?

Hi Lora, 3 great videos on the Bonmusica rest. Sorry to see you drilled your own hole but that's ok, no one will hold that against you since you make such informative videos :-) One thing I wanted to point out to you about the screws on the rest... they are actually simple threaded rod which can be purchased at a hardware store. The long side can be made very long if needed by use of threaded rod however I see the problem with the short side and the swivel joint possibly gauging the back of your instrument. Not too much that can be done about the short side except to offer you some vitamins in hopes we can get you to grow 2"-3" and solve the problem that way. Anyway thanks again for all the great information and keep the videos coming! Thanks.

I am actually having the same question but I play viola!! My viola is 16 3/8" and looks to me that the bonmusica size of 235mmm would be correct. However that is listed for a 16" viola and they ALSO offer a 240mm which they list for a 16 1/2" viola. I am leaning towards ordering the smaller one having measured my viola across that part of the back ... and thinking that if I want it to sit on the viola where it will be close to my neck, the viola is slightly smaller there. I have memories of my resonans shoulder pad crashing into my instrument, and really don't want the same problem, because of the legs being too wide.

Thank you for this wonderful video... Bought a nicely set-up pre-war German factory fiddle at a benefit auction for a late friend's family, figuring that I have played Irish and old-time tunes on the mandolin long enough to try making the transition. But the only shoulder rest my local music store had was a Kun, and it quickly convinced me I should have taken up bodybuilding 60 years ago to not be so narrow & slope shouldered, and hollow chested. Meanwhile, I'm old enough to have some possibly arthritis stiffness in my neck. Maybe too much time on this Smartphone. Lots of alternative ways of holding fiddles here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, from old mountaineers holding it in the crook of their arm (but they have bigger arms) to a woman who uses some sort of scarf looped around the body of the fiddle. I am just starting to pay more attention and figure things out. The two teachers I have gone to (one who grew up on the "oldtime" festival circuit, the other with an ivy league music performance Masters) were pretty much clueless about (or overwhelmed by) my physical problems holding the instrument and the bow, which is a whole other whining story. But I've been able to read music for 50 years, and still have fun finding melodies on a fretless fingerboard for the benefit of my living room furniture! Again, thank you for putting this video here, because it gives me a whole new burst of patience!

@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 4 жыл бұрын
Chris, it occurred to me that I DO know what the different gauges are for. So, the THICKER gauge strings are more powerful, louder, but they are slower to respond, and they are a bit darker. Heavy gauge also adds to the total tension on the violin neck. (thin gauge is just the opposite of all the above). So, if you had a violin where your D string was weak, but you wanted to keep all your strings the same brand, you could try a heavy gauge D. Or, if your violin is super dark, or if you feel like it's inarticulate or slow to respond, you could try thin gauge strings, but honestly, if you had that problem, I would probably suggest a different brand of strings. But anyway, hopefully this info helps you understand the basic concept of gauges.

@@RedDesertViolin Thanks to you i did, dear Lora! I also sent your videos to Bon Musica so they could see how complex it can be when you have no idea how to do it. I was really disappointed with them. They dont provide much info about it, cos they think ist VERY SIMPLE AND OBVIOUS to set it up. hahaha

@@soraiadrummond Glad you sent them to Bon Musica! Some companies really pay attention to this stuff, and they adapt to make their materials better for consumers. We'll see what BM does.

I am six foot four with broad shoulders. Can you make a video for people like me?

I am currently exploring this topic, and I'm asking my super tall colleagues for input. In the meantime, I would recommend that you find professional violinists with your build, and study them. You will learn a TON by watching and focusing on one thing at a time, like, bow elbow, bow hand, left hand, angle of the violin, etc. A couple names for you to start you out is Steven Moeckel (modern violinist, concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony), and Leonid Kogan (Russian violinist, died in 1982, but there is plenty of video of him). Also Joseph Szigeti and Erick Friedman. But also, I noticed a lengthy thread on violinist.com about this topic. Try exploring there.....you will meet other tall people personally, and you get commiserate with them!

@@loralynstaples5483 Thank you so much for your prompt and informative reply. I will check out the sources you gave and wait to see if you come up with a video too. I have always found your videos the most helpful on KZbin for specific violin topics; short, succinct and to the point. Much appreciated for us amateur intermediates! I wrestled with my Bonamusica until it fitted my shoulder exactly but it still somehow allows the violin to slip away from me and I end up supporting with my left hand while playing. Thanks in advance. Adam

I have the Kun and it works fine. I was interested in this as an oddity / invention. I was looking at some other Utubes about this device and there seems to be a lot of complaints about violin damage - scratching ect. I'm sure it must be a well designed item so I put those accidents down to people not adjusting / applying it correctly. As I say, my Kun works fine but I'm still interested in trying one of these.

@@RedDesertViolin I was in a " research neck rest's " mood last night. I saw another one called the Pirastro Korfker " ( probably spelled that wrong ) that's even more expensive. A lot of people comment on the price - like with the Bon, which suprises me as it's small change compaired to the price of the violin and bow themselves. The lady reviewing it was really smitten to the point where you'd think her last neck rest was constantly slipping and causing her phisical trauma. I'm sure it's very comfortable but I also think a lot of it is in her head too.
