I love Bonanza! But this was a strange episode... It just didn't have the same depth of screenwriting as previous episodes... Especially with Adam, and later Candy. and when Little Joe was a youngster - he became too headstrong later. Ben and Hoss are the best throughout the whole show - after Hoss ( Dan Blocker) died things went downhill.

Dan Blocker doesn’t really look himself in this episode. You've got to realize that these later episodes of Bonanza featured Hoss at the time he was getting close to his death in real life. Probably the last thing he should’ve been doing was working on the TV show. He died at the young age of only 43. And that was roughly about a year after this show was broadcast.

this was season 12. The show ran 14 seasons and Dan Blocker passed just before the final season. So he was there in season 13. He wasn't "sick", but when he had a gallbladder surgery, he threw a blood clot to his lung and they were unable to resuscitate him.

"The last thing he should've been doing was working..."??? Why would working be the fatal factor? I suspect his early death had more to do with his carrying 300+ lbs year after year. He was well aware -- and I bet the producers and EVERYONE reminded him constantly -- that he needed to keep his weight up for his character, despite the risk to him. I'm guessing, of course, but not idly. Did ALL the cast and creators stand around at his funeral, sheepishly eyeing each other, knowing that they'd sacrificed him??

Kinda lazy writing here. What would they gain by isolating themselves in that mountain ridge, leaving them open for a surrounding ambush. The plan is to catch the sheriff off guard when they come riding in through the narrow path in-between the ridges, but in the end Buck goes to the top, makes himself an open target and gets shot. Shit plan. What happens to the wife in the end is not clear, nor any resolution to the backstory of how their farm was burned down.

Kinda good episode. I dont know why the writers had to have so many endings where someone gets killed. Very predictable. They also kind of ruin it with the pearly white BRIGHT teeth. Especially on a dark shinned man. For me this takes so much away from being this time period. And how many times do you have to cock a rifle without a shell coming out? Dont want to be so negative. Maybe its PMS.

Even though I' m sure not many people went to the dentist back then... there was less processed food, less packaged sugary junk, soda etc. Unless someone chewed tobacco, dental health was probably better than today. ( especially when someone was relatively young.)
