This is my second best episode after Springtime. It's funny, it has all three brothers, the two old timers are meaner than snakes, no shootings and most of all, no dead fiancées. Just a perfect episode.

Percy Alfred Helton was a wonderful actor. He was a Hollywood classic. This show had incredibly beautiful horses. Amanda Blake (Gunsmoke) rescued many of these show horses.

It’s disabled/visually impaired persons like myself. We use accessible tech to read and post and listen to you tube. We have to swipe across the screen and it frequently causes dislikes or thumbs downs. It’s not something we can usually see or fix.

Certainly the most enjoyable episode I’ve seen to date. I wonder how many people involved in this episode would have imagined that Ellen Corby was yet to go on to become a national treasure (as Grandma Walton).

Oh my gosh, I just LOVE the episodes where all 3 brothers are involved! I could not stop cracking up at their facial expressions in this one - especially Hoss and Adam. That team up is so underrated, they're such a fun duo. 🤣 everyone really seemed like they had a blast making this episode.

Around 26:32 lady gives unsolicited advice, as Hoss is leaving the room -- Hoss politely says "Thank you, ma'am" or something like that, and shuts the door. 🙂

These values are all wrong. In the 1860's a good horse was worth about $120, not $400. You could even buy land at the cost of $3 to $5 per acre. Farmhands earned $250/year and general labor earned 10 cents per hour, or $300/year.

Some questionable ethics in this one. For example the conflict of interest of getting paid to ride against the horse you own. I wonder if there's something in the rule book about that. Also Joe loan sharking and making a deal with his brothers only to be competing against them.

Not so many these days. Horses have gotten too expensive. Most people ground train first. There are a lot of videos of the Extreme Mustang Makeover competitions. They are all ground broken first. A lot of the competitors are girls.

I prefer the more dramatic/serious episodes like "Breed of Violence, The Mission, Badge Without Honor, The Last Viking, The Hopefuls, Escape to Ponderosa, Desert Justice, Blood on the Land, The Last Trophy, The Way Station", etc These are the kind of episodes that made Bonanza memorable!

It is virtually identical to the 1873, it's just much larger. But considering that Michael Landon nor Pernell Roberts was not really a big guy I doubt it was a '76. I hope this does not come off as conceded or vain, but I hear these questions a lot.

They never mention how long the race is. That might decide which horse would win. The cannon bones on that black horse were tiny compared to the radius bones. The stride makes the difference. The army kept Standardbred stallions available. Ranchers were allowed to breed to them to upgrade horses for strength and quality throughout the west in the later 1800s.

We should be keeping the finest wild horses to freshen lines- and there should be a data base of DNA. Wrong to turn old valuable horses into just meat, as it would be wrong to devastate ay species complete DNA collection. Look what happened naturally with grasses and wheat. There are overbread lines of Arabians that could use freshening now; no one contacts owners of these to point out that their stock bred out to as far as it can go could benefit by insertion of more rugged strength.

This my favorite Episode along with Ponderosa Matador and Springtime. However I have watched all 431 episodes so many times and noticed loads of things but one thing that makes me upset is Adam always throws things on the floor in the lounge. From matchsticks, to stones to food. Pa told Joe off enough times for putting his feet in the furniture but never told Adam off. I just wondered if this was a Pernell thing and wondered did he do this at his home too! I certainly would tell him off if he was my son.
