Bonanza - Episode 70 - The Lonely House - Joe Cartwright and the young widow of a family friend are held hostage on her isolated ranch outside Platte City by the same gang that robbed Little Joe in the town bank earlier that day.
The Lonely House
Director: William Witney
Writer: Frank Chase
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 15 October 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Wounded bandit Track (Paul Richards) takes refuge at the home of widow Lee Bolden (Faith Domergue). Another of Lee's house guests, Joe Cartwright, recognizes Trock as a fugitive from justice. At first prepared to reveal Trock's identity, Joe hesitates when he realizes that Lee is falling in love with the injured outlaw. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"This Bonanza story has Little Joe being a witness to a bank robbery. Later on while tracking the bandits he comes across doctor's widow Faith Domergue in an isolated cottage. Soon enough they're joined by the bandits, first a wounded Paul Richards with the loot and his two henchmen.
The wounded Richards keeps the other two in line only because he's hidden the loot. But James Beck and Vito Scotti are a real pair of specimens.
The character of Faith Domergue as a lonely widow with some needs is established and real.. But I kind of think that falling for Richards is a bit much." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"I dunno, I just thought this one was rather strange... Maybe it wouldn't have been so odd if they hadn't added the saxophone music throughout, but I just couldn't take it seriously. The story was pretty good; I think mostly it was the music that threw me. It was somewhat realistic that the widow, being as tough, lonely and independent as she was, would fall for the villain. He had a gentle, thoughtful manner about him that would appeal to her, and I think she could handle the rest of him. I think the romanticism was definitely a bit too Hollywood, but otherwise, it made a pretty good story." Written by Charity92 on IMDb.com

A main theme for a lot of the Cartwright adventures was doing what's right for others and whats right, period. Not just whats right for yourself. A simple ,timeless message .

Some Bonanza trivia. This episode was supposed to star Adam (Pernell Roberts), but, he got sick and couldn't film this episode. So, the directors replaced him with Little Joe. Glad they did. Michael Landon was superb in this episode.

Andrew Drabble. One of the best episodes, a true love story, loved it. Wow, poor Joe, got beat-up for defending her, she pulled a rifle, gun on him, had to Dr. him, had to fight again a man shooting at him, beat, used him as a shield, if Pukie, were smarter he would have lost. All because he told her to kiss the guy. Great ending and acting.

If you look closely as they are departing on horseback at the end, you can see that Michael Landon actually pulls a string (right hand) which is attached to the horse's mane, which signals to the horse to rear on its hind legs. It was a nice touch as to say 'goodbye' while on horseback from Joe Cartwright.

Sensitive drama in this episode. The David Rose score with the trumpet gives a touch of urban, even Film Noirish, in this Western. Many Bonanza episodes were scored with the Rose touch of urban. A fine episode, even with the formula ending.

Darn. This might have been a great episode, but I don't know if the widow ever got the money from the bank draft. I live alone myself, so I envy her for having a possible future with a reformed bank robber after he's served his time. This may be fictional, but I hope it works out for them.
@brianwest2775
@brianwest2775 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the widow got the money because nothing was lost. It was disappointing that she never revealed that a lot of that money was hers. It would have been interesting if he had asked if she could last 5 more years without a man. Could have set the stage with him earlier commenting that she had no sugar for tea because it was too expensive, or something like that. Then she could have revealed "I'll be fine, $2000 of that money you stole is mine."

Missed out on all the episodes of Bonanza as it was bedtime hour for me according to my parents...8 P.M. Rather a treat to see them now (😅over half a century later😊); moreover, grateful Little Joe rather than Adam had the role. Little Joe's agility in those skuffles with the bank robbers are fitting, yet he has some mature caring moments too.

Wow, they kept to the script, Little Joe didn't have his guns after the bank robber dropped them into the well, impressive. This was a very interesting episode about a kind of love and redemption not seen nor experienced. I'm surprised LIttle Joe finally even after his first beating in the house giving that tall blond his good beating in the barn. Great comeback.

@@dillantrader6898 you must not have noticed the many bloopers in the Bonanza series. Lots of them!! Many of them in the house on the Ponderosa! Pay close attention to how many times the house is used for other’s homes, even a bar! And when they stand outside with the door open there’s a blank wall with a chair against it that isn’t there when they go inside. There’s many more but that’s enough to justify Mr. Branam’s comment. 😂

Paul Richards played a left handed fast gun in first ever episode of Gunsmoke. So fast he outdrew Matt Dillon with ease. Problem was he fast but not accurate. Never took time to aim so his speed helped him up close. Matt theorized this so called him out from distance and killed him.

Vito Scotti was an Italian character actor who did many would say racist characters in the 50’s and 60’s. The Japanese soldier who didn’t know WWII had ended on Giligan’s Island and a dirt poor Mexican Bandit on The Rifleman to name a few. He would use fake teeth and over the top accents to get his point across.

At 23.35 what were the poles for running right by her place? Electricity or Telegraph? And I’m sick of 2 minute, unrealistic fist fights.

The story has major flaws in its plot. Faith Domergue smooching and falling in love with Paul Richards is the principle one. Had the director taken advantage of the contradictions in Richards character it would have been a better teleplay. But in any event it was fun to watch and thank you for putting it on the Web.
