Around Christmas time in 2017, I was in London living around Stratford. I went back and forth between the two places multiple times and wondered the same. There was also a direct bus route as far as I remember that took two hours. 😅 And of course the liz line was there without the service running at the time. 😅

@@norbitonflyer5625 True, if the routes have to terminate at different platforms, it doesn't work. Going by the map, there are three routes between stations that TfL now consider to be "the same": Monument / Bank to Moorgate / Liverpool Street, via the Circle, Northern, or Central lines. However, it's been some months since I last used Moorgate, I don't know if you still need to pass the gateline to change trains to Liverpool Street. If so, I don't think this is valid.

Well in Paris there are four ways to get from Charles De Gaulle Étoile to Nation, metro lines 1, 2 and 6 and RER A. Basically all the history of the development of transport in Paris in the last 50 years has been easing congestion on lines 1 and 4 and relieving the lines you built to relieve those lines (hence the extension of RER E). RER A is the fastest, followed by line 1 and lined 2 and 6 take about the same amount of time but line 6 is just a shade slower. Line 6 is pretty nice though with a lot of it being above ground including right next to the Eiffel Tower. Line 1 is automatic so it's very reliable and it's fun when you have the view out of the front (or back)

I don't believe that going that way round can only take 28 minutes, though! The TubeMap app I use on Android suggests 24 minutes to get from Paddington to Temple (arbitrary station I chose because it's only served by the Circle + District), then another 15 minutes to Liverpool Street, so 39 total. I can't get it to tell me alternative routes - if I just put in Paddington to Liverpool Street it tells me that the Liz Line takes 9 minutes, not 23!

The Elizabeth Line from Stratford to Bond Street is definitely the quickest route and the trains are generally less packed and more comfortable, the only drawback being the ludicrously long walk you have to take to exit the station, particularly if you get on a train nowhere near the exit at Bond Street. I mostly use the Central Line, but the trains are showing their age and it's like a rickety fairground ride that seems to go on forever. I would never use the Jubilee Line to get to Bond Street, like going to John O'Groats via Lands End.

I think it's sort of worth pointing out that the central line extension on 1949 coincided exactly with the electrification of the mainline route from Liverpool Street to shenfield. This is some of the oldest overhead line electrification still in use in the country and is similar to that installed on Woodhead. Many praise the Elizabeth line for its cross platform interchange with the central line at stratford but it's been there since the 1940s when the station was majorly rebuilt to allow it. I think it's at this point that stratford starts to become recognised as a major interchange for commuters in london and the need to connect a busy commuter line with an underground urban railway before crossrail joined the routes directly. The shenfield metro was planned by LNER and existed mostly as a BR then national rail service from 1949 to the full opening of the crossrail timetable in 2022. I think it might deserve some more attention than it gets as BR ran (at points) an incredibly intense service with complex stopping patterns that might have rivalled even the Japanese railways of the time.

If you count routes but not direct connections, there's 3 routes from Waterloo to London Bridge: Jubilee, Thames Clipper & Northern Line (maybe you can hide in a train returning via the loop at Kensington and stay put)

Finsbury Park to Kings Cross / St Pancras maybe? Piccadilly line or Victoria line on the underground. Great Northern or Thameslink to the upstairs platforms at Kings Cross - that is one option on the same tracks but different trains Thameslink to St Pancras downstairs platforms

@katrinabryce great spot. Would be interested to know the time differences between the options. You could also add Paddington to Liverpool Street or Embankment (Circle both ways and then the Elizabeth or Bakerloo lines respectively).

@@quintuscrinis Victoria - 5 mins Piccadilly - 7 mins Thameslink from St Pancras downstairs - 7 mins Thameslink or Great Northern from Kings Cross upstairs - 5 or 6 mins No 259 bus - 20 mins

If Euston Square ever gets intergrated intio Euston, as planned for the rebuild of the main station for HS2, that will make three ways

I'm sure it's a deliberate error to drive engagement, but the Northern & Eastern Railway was not merged with the GER until 1902. It was, however, leased to and operated by the ECR from 1844.
