Well in Paris there are four ways to get from Charles De Gaulle Étoile to Nation, metro lines 1, 2 and 6 and RER A. Basically all the history of the development of transport in Paris in the last 50 years has been easing congestion on lines 1 and 4 and relieving the lines you built to relieve those lines (hence the extension of RER E). RER A is the fastest, followed by line 1 and lined 2 and 6 take about the same amount of time but line 6 is just a shade slower. Line 6 is pretty nice though with a lot of it being above ground including right next to the Eiffel Tower. Line 1 is automatic so it's very reliable and it's fun when you have the view out of the front (or back)

Another YT vid asked was the Elizabeth Line worth it , which I havent answered there yet, but there are crudely three west-east cross london routes going through Zone 1. One is the New Road / City Road northern route of the Metropolitan Railway connecting many of the Main Line Railway Stations, Starting at Paddington and Ending at Liverpool Street, usefully a bus like the 205 could cover this above groung. Likewise the Oxford Street / New Oxford Street, Holborn. Bank Liverpool Street, a bus route like the 25 or similar could cover this kind of journey with the Central Line doing the original route and the Elizabeth the faster connection . The southern route is more complex owing to the bends in the river thames, and advantage of tunneling has never really taken much of a north bank / south bank weave that might actually have some use, so communities historically were not connected leaving the Metropolitan District Route running Paddington - Kensington - Victoria - Cannon Street - Tower Hill then onto Aldgate (east) as the line connecting the southern main line stations. But what was / is missing is the idea of HS2 and where to end it, to me I feel it should have tunnelled from Old Oak Common onto Paddington / Marylebone (one station) to Euston Kings Cross (one station) then onto the east london interchange that is Canary Wharf - Thamesmead/ Abbey Wood (one station)- Ebbsfleet to HS1 to provide more useful, and fast, connections. this would mean no need for big external stations as most places in london are within easy reach of those calling points, and takes some relief off the Elizabeth Line which is already overcrowded. In building the present HS 2 and Elizabeth Line some connecttions and times for west london and the west of england have been compromised with loss of some direct locals out of Paddington via Ealing Broadway to Greenford which could have run onto the East West rail line or Aylesbury

You know, off the top of my head I can't actually think of another case of '3 direct routes from one station to another', not counting the shared routes of the sub-surface lines. I suppose stations like King's Cross St. Pancras, one of the other London termini, Bank or Ealing Broadway would be the obvious candidates due the multitude of connections each of those stations have, but none jump out at me necessarily. I love that the Elizabeth line's Bond Street entrance is on the street where the Central Line station was supposed to go but didn't in the end lol - one of those interesting historical echoes you get from time to time. I also love that the three routes to get from Bond Street to Stratford represent 3 very different eras of transport in London, as you noted. Having options is good, as you note - cost-obsessed politicians would see it as wasteful redundancy but I prefer to see it as backups to make a system more robust. Personally when I'm heading to Stratford it's either the classic 'bus, train, Jubilee Line' or the almost as classic 'bus, DLR'. Funny that those two represent quite similar eras of transport in their way. Great video!

It's all very physical.There's tangible stuff to ponder on as you walk though one station. There were all the companies' shennanigans of the past too. But, up north at another major transport hub on the Clyde there once there were something like 40 steamers across many companies' fleets with multifarious routes serving dozens of piers and vibrant ruinous competition and expansion. There's a few piers still in use. But the past is entirely ephemeral now. What you see is empty. When they went, the routes left no trace, just water. Incredible foresight by the New Works people to plan cross-platform interchanges there (Central-Mainline Rail) and at Mile End (Central-District/Met). Must have saved trillions of person-hours over the years, well justifying the cost. I gather the Elizabeth line planners hated it, though - put them to a lot of trouble having to plan for crowd control: what they really wanted was to rebuild the Central line into new tunnel platforms with miles of walkways between, which they would have described as 'for passenger convenience' ...

What happened with the end of the 2d fare, and when? Iimagine the change would have been popular!
@Tevildo5 сағат бұрын
July 1907 - the fare was increased to 3d for journeys of more than seven stations. Still a competitive price - there are no records of civil disturbance in London at the time, at least.

I cannot think of any other direct connections with three separate routes in London. Edit: One comment mentioned King’s X to Finsbury Park: Great Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria.

I found this but I'm not sure it counts: West Ham has two tube lines that go the same way and National Rail c2c. Liverpool Street to Stratford there are up to two National Rail operators, Elizabeth line and one tube line. Paddington to Liverpool Street has the Elizabeth line/the Circle Line in two different directions/ Hammersmith & city Line. I'm not sure there are three different routes between East Croydon and London Bridge on Southern also 1 Thameslink route. Not sure there are 3 southern routes from West Croydon to London Bridge.

I return from taking the Elizabeth line and the jubilee line to see this

This may be cheating, but there's three ways to get from South Kensington to Hammersmith direct. Piccadilly westbound, district westbound or circle eastbound to go all the way via Monument, King's Cross and Paddington.
@DMD6916 сағат бұрын
So what are the time differences between the three different routes?
@Tevildo5 сағат бұрын
According to TFL: Central Line - 21 mins Jubilee Line - 26 mins Elizabeth Line - 16 mins.

I was going to ask that question. I'd guess it's the Elizabeth line- fewer stops.

Albeit there is no such street as Bond Street!

True! One of the great oddities of London.

Did you know there is no Lower Regent Street either. The street from Piccadilly heading south is just Regent street.
@Tevildo5 сағат бұрын
Neither is there a Marlborough Street, the Monopoly board notwithstanding.

Since there is a New Bond Street, was there once an old one? (I realise old maps of London feature on a different KZbin channel.)
@grahamtaylor63175 сағат бұрын
@@DavidNewmanDrthere are both a New Bond Street and an Old Bond Street.

This video argues that there are three ways for getting to Stratford from Bond Street. That is, in fact, incorrect. There are three direct ways to get out of Stratford for Bond Street.
