The Mod Squad is an American crime drama series that ran on ABC from 1968 to 1973. It starred Michael Cole as Peter "Pete" Cochran, Peggy Lipton as Julie Barnes, Clarence Williams III as Lincoln "Linc" Hayes, and Tige Andrews as Captain Adam Greer.
I believe this song was the playout for the shows pilot episode. Enjoy.

This song is hauntingly beautiful. Thanks a million for posting this. I had watched the closing credits of the Mod Squad and this music always captivated me. It's wonderful to know the name of the song and also to hear a longer version of it. When I hear this song, I'm transported back to 1968 all over again. These days, it's so nice to travel back in time and remember a time when life was sweet and easy. Since then I have lost so many, many loved ones and right now my mother and my best friend's lives are hanging in the balance. This song is a chilling reminder to hold the ones you love close at heart; do everything you can for them while they are here.

Michael Cole's (Pete Cochran) future wife (Paula Kelly) was a member of The Modernaires. Had no idea there was an actual song for the end theme. It is very beautiful

Somebody posted info about the end credit music that played at the end of The Mod Squad and I’m glad they they did. It’s just as nostalgic as Burt Bacharach’s instrumental “Nikki” which was used as the theme music for the ABC Movie Of The Week in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While I like the vocals, it would’ve been nice if there was an instrumental only track on the B side.

Hmmm, you make me want to look up "Nikki". That was the name of his (Bacharach's) daughter with Angie Dickinson.

@@AnniePiano The instrumental Nikki IS about Bacharach’s daughter.

Shorty Rogers! The vocalists have an Alan Copland sound to them. He was a Modernaire, after all.

Thanks a million for posting this. I've been looking for it since I heard a Tommy Flanagan Trio album cut of it (no vocal), and it's also on his Solo album of 1977. You have settled the writers-question on your label (Rogers/Russell). Erroneously, various websites have credited it to another writing duo, Schwartz/Fields, who wrote another tune of the same name that Nat King Cole and others recorded. Even the online homemade sheet music of Flanagan's transcribed solo says it's by Schwartz/Fields! Aargh! So thank you soooo much.

Thank you, yes its a superb theme, and I also like the John Harrison version. I think Shorty should have done his own instrumental too.

Thank you! Loved hearing this full version for the first time - just great. I'm still looking for the original instrumental version used for the closing credits of Mod Squad. Hearing this full version, I think it's possible the Modernaires may have done an instrumental mixdown for the TV show.

You are very welcome, yes its a superb song and must have been getting towards the end of their recording career in 68? I don't believe a recording was ever issued of the instrumental, though that's not to say that it won't show up some day on a Tv compilation.

Thank you for posting this. I have been looking for it for years. I had the 45 I got from a dj friend in Las Vegas. Came home from school one day and found my Mother had thrown out all my books, films on 35 mm and records and was heartbroken. I was 16. My Mother was an evil and controlling bitch.

That's right Aaron, I believe this song was used just for the pilot episode, the fantastic theme that we all know and love for the Mod Squad came later. How I wish they had released a full version of the theme on a 45rpm. Cheers.

@@bondbrookebond Actually I remember this haunting song used regularly for Mod Squad closing credits - I loved it, and only 50 years later do I find out what it is! However, I still cannot find the instrumental version of this song. It sounds so similar production-wise that I have to think the Modernaires may have produced an instrumental version of it - much like Nikki was used for ABC Movie of the Week, pointed out earlier. Although ABC Promotion Director had an entirely different and "beefed up" version of Nikki produced for the ABC movie open. I appreciate this post and loved hearing for the first time the original version!
