Dang, shoot! Where have the years gone? I love this song at 50. My parents had one of those automatic playing pianos and had this song as one of the rolls we could play. I started loving this song in the mid 80s playing it through the auto-piano. My 6 year old loves it as well. People trip out when she starts singing along.

Music made by people who often had it tough but mentally and physically, but overcame challenges to get where they got, so their music reflect their humanity. Nowadays more often than not what we have is no-life artists who just parrot whatever style is on and produce soulless music. Absolutely. I grew up on this song as I'm sure you have. Yet, as I've gotten older and have struggled through addiction, I can relate to its lyrics and mood on such an unbelievably deeper level than I'd ever imagined. Just yesterday, I was having bad cravings, and the line "I got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train. I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain" kept replaying in my head. I don't want to "go back to New Orleans". Today, I did not relapse. ❤ I think that the music that forms the soundtrack of your life has a profound effect on your choices, your emotions, and your ability to connect and relate. Such an outstanding song by a brilliant collection of musicians. Everything about this song is about as perfect as a song can ever get. ❤♥️♥️

Truly magnificent art. I agree too, it’s like it isn’t his voice. It literally seems like he would need every inch of his body to hurl out that much pitch and with that much passion! Meanwhile he’s standing there like a church boy or something. What I like about it as well is how unapologetic it all is. There nothing but the song, the singer, and the band. It could t be any closer to a record itself. Gonna go check out the lyrics and read about their meaning; how old they were when they sang it; who wrote them; their other hits; etc.

“ An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing.[33][34] The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun" during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers.[34][35] It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential,[35] and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio, De Lane Lea Studios on Kingsway in London[35] to capture it.” wiki

Born in '52 here. Was at camp when this song ruled. To describe it as a 'hit' is to grossly misunderstand the significance of this song, 'The Animal's' first hit. It wasn't 'a' hit, it was THE HIT of the summer of 1964! It ushered in the beginning of a title wave of progressive rock and roll that was the late sixties blossom of really great songs that lasted until about '72.

Its weird to think. This song is 60 years old. In 40 years, it will be 100 years old. If we are still listening 60 years later, we will be listening 100 years later.

It's even crazier that this is based off a folk song that could already be hundreds of years old
