in the lore, kou is basically an "outsider" to the main friend group. she's friends with the cast, but not very close.

@@legofrederick3262 in short: a safety violation. in longer terms: it was the player's birthday and they were blowing out the candles of their cake, as hinted through the minigames between cutcenes. unfortunately, there were too many candles and when the player tried to blow them out it set fire to bondee, who was presenting the cake to the player. here's where the safety violation comes in. the animatronics are programmed to deem any inflicted physical damage as a threat to the establishment. they were designed with adults in mind, but to a child they would essentially become a killing machine due to how roughly they try to restrain the target. they never considered that a child would cause enough damage to trigger this security system, so all of the nearby animatronics who witnessed this event went into security mode and were not programmed to distinguish between children and adults. the exception to this is mama kou, who was designed to take care of lost children and protect them (and is also separated from the rest of the gang, so they did not witness the candle event.) while the enclosure method is fine under short periods of time, the player tries to stay enclosed all night and suffocates to death as a result.
