I've got so many unplayed wargames, that picking five is a tough order. However, here are the ones I have on my list to play next, with the possible exception of Vietnam: 1. Sauter sur Kolwezi (Vae Victis magazine game) - I finished preparing this one last night and am hoping to get to play it this evening. 2. Mokra 1st September 1939 (Strategemata) - This one is also ready to play, so could see the table in the next couple of weeks. 3. Tonkin: The Indochina war 1950-54 (second edition) (Legion Wargames) 4. Vietnam 1965-1975 (Victory Games) 5. 1813: Napoleon's Nemesis (Europa Simulazioni)

Vietnam is a tough one. It has a nice intro scenario and a well written rulebook, but it is still a tough nut to crack.
@laurelmatt54157 жыл бұрын
Thanks Judd. I've had Vietnam for a couple of years now, but it's proving difficult to find the time to get it set up and be able to play through at least a couple of the scenarios. I even created a new - reformatted - version of the rulebook to make it easier to read. It looks like such a good game that I don't want to give up on it. I will get round to playing it one day. In the meantime, there are still the other 30 or so unplayed wargames to try out!

I don't really do top 5 lists, but I'll give it a go (however, some are really series - I have too many unplayed wargames because my wife and I are usually playing non-wargames): 1. Men of Iron Series - Played 2 scenarios in Volume 1, 1 scenario in Volume 3; but I have all 4 volumes plus recently acquired C3i #22 for the Agincourt scenario; Currently preparing to go through all 28 scenarios from start to finish. 2. Great Battles of History Series - I have the recent Alexander game (Macendonian Art of War), SPQR Deluxe, Caesar: Conquest of Gaul, and Chandragupta. I really want to get to Chandragupta the most, but with Battles of the Warrior Queen on P500 preorder I am interested in that set of conflicts also. I have the Simple GBoH series also, which from my understanding isn't more simple but maybe a little less fiddly with counters (and I'll probably just jump into the full system after Men of Iron). 3. The US Civil War - Missed that they were selling prints of the updated rules and player aid, so I guess I'll just have to print out my own copy. I don't have any of the US civil war classics, but at least I have this one (thanks to Marcowargamer's review). 4. Battles of the American Revolution Tri-Pac - Just got this one. I'll probably play through Men of Iron, then one GBoH title (most likely SPQR), and then dive into this one. 5. Agincourt - The old SPI boxed game. Was going to play this on the anniversary of the battle, but then life got in the way. As always, there are tons of games on the way (eventually). Everything will go on hold when Pendragon ships and arrives, and everything is on hold right now as I redo the game room (found some 3x3 cube shelves at Target, and they were on clearance for $25). As to Liberty or Death, that was the game that got me into the Revolutionary War/Rebellion of the Colonies topic. School really turned me off to the topic when I was young, but COIN ignited my interest and this one became my favorite in the series (beating out Falling Sky, which is #2 and I though would be #1). I consider LoD to be a mix of almost all the COIN rules out there, and I like the look and abstraction of the game. Best of all, my wife and I control one side of a two player game against the bots and it becomes a co-operative wargame that she'll play (otherwise I get to play solo almost all the time). It is a great game, but if you don't like the COIN series then this won't change your mind.

Just a heads up on the Fire Team update...it's been renamed Kontact Now: Red Eclipse, and it's available for pre-order from LnL. Odd thing is, it's in the WWII game series folder at Consimworld. Per a thread on BGG, there is a lot of WWII content by the designer, but according to David at LnL, the stuff they publish (short term anyway) will focus on modern stuff. Looks cool...I pre-ordered it. Also, how can you guys talk about War of the Ring and not at least mention the awesome designer edition. A buddy of mine has it, and it's something to behold :)

Judd, Here Come the Rebels is a very fun game! You were lucky to get it. There is also Roads to Gettysburg, same system but the Gettysburg area (and the maps join together with Here Come the Rebels). MMP is theoretically going to reprint Gettysburg and include the HCtR units. So far they have only reprinted Stonewall Jackson's Way (now with a 2). Worth picking that up, but MMP is being slow on the reprints.

Gameboardgeek has a lot of good discussions about Great Battles of History. Simple Battles streamlines it all a bit and the rules are usable with most entries. A few that are already streamlined like Ran and Samurai are not compatible. Some people favor simple battles, others prefer the baseline to enjoy the extra chrome. If you only plan to play Alexander... just go with the core rules for the first try. If too crunchy try simple. If you're going to collect the entire series then it might be advisable to learn simple battles as that ruleset allows you to jump games easily. (a lot of minor tweaks to the rules with each entry, hence some people like to use Simple Battles for the lot of em)
@juddvance77217 жыл бұрын
I want to try War Galley for sure. I didn't know if SGBoH would translate to it since it is so different. SPQR has been on my radar for years. Someday, it will be mine. Oh yes...it will be mine.
@Darthvegeta80007 жыл бұрын
War Galley like Ran and Samurai is not compatible. For Samurai warfare I recommend Ran over Samurai due to Ran being more 'finetuned'. For Great battles of History the 2 main favourites are Alexander and SPQR with SPQR being the foundation of the series.

The gun on the cover of 'Here Come the Rebels" is the Colt Model 1855 Revolving Carbine (.56 I believe, though there were other calibres). It's a Colt, so it shot well enough, but it had a lot of problems that prevented it from catching on, not the least of which was the tendency to injure the user... Also... you have God's Playground ARGHHH! I've been dying to find it but it's so ridiculously expensive on the secondary market that I'll be a fool to try. @@gregschmittgens1262 No Greg, for years you overated until you went on your diet. But I'm now trying to figure out what co dideration is and if it should have a hyphen. Co-dideration? "My friend and I diderated on a work project. He was my co-diderator.

We accept the tough challenges. We usually mention how hard it is to get each list down to 5.

Greg Schmittgens East Wind Rain is also in my not played yet but owned category. Liked the idea of every Capital ship being represented. Heard it has some neat ideas for strategic movement and naval air combat, but also heard the rules make it more like East Wind Pain. Perused the book, and didn't think it was terribly laid out. If I remember right there is a few different scenarios.

Chief... try "Warfighter" by DVG... I know you'd love picking out all your soldiers and moving through the mission... it's pretty short, and doesn't have a huge footprint.
