The three best: #3.Napoleon from Columbia Games! Still have copies of 1st - 3rd efitions! copy! Still love it! #2. Napolen at War, SPI (1975) - a simple yet superb quad-game that really conveys the feel of the battles as described by participants and better historians. #1. Napoleon's Last Battles - Designer's Edition by Kevin Zucker, SPI 1976, with the Command Magazine counter variants (more "historical" and less "balanced/gamey") - a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, where timing, use of terrain and allocation of forces is critical! It's truly a fabulous game - especially with the aforementioned counter variants! Did not care for CnC Napoleonics - too many historical inaccuracies derived from regurgitated hearsay and lack of research. Sold it within a week.

My top five - 5. The Gamer's Napoleonic Battle Series, I've playef Marengo and Austerlitz. 4. La Bataille, old school rules version eg. Vauchamps. 3. Zucker Operational eg. Habit of Victory, 1809, etc. 2. Wellington's Victory. Sure you can empty your best units into a pile or swarm of skirmishers, but watch the cavalry eat 'em up. Excellent game. 1. Napoleon's Triumph - for a really nail biting battle of wits. It is hard to get but that doesn't mean you can't get to play it. Even on vassal. I would not actually distinguish them by ranking, it depends on the need of the moment.

I was putting in the AC's while the wife had the Create Channel on and Travels with Darley was on, Anyway she was in Belgium and she just happen to go to the town if of Waterloo and showed what it looked like today. The Battle field was pretty much untouched as it was under Gov protection. Natural the town was modern but the farm house and the field looked the same. There was also a huge hill with a lion on top but when you get to the top you see a great view if the battle field. As this was a PBS show you might be able to see this ob KZbin. I would love to see this in person as I am a huge Napoleonic's fan.

Some people actually prefer the 1st edition of Napoleonic Wars because they do not like the changes that were made. I was a little shocked that Stratego made this list but I did some research on it and well, its basically a light wargame. Not a bad gift for a young lad!
@gregschmittgens12627 жыл бұрын
The main improvement in second edition Nappy Wars for me is that taking keys of minors counts good for the conqueror but doesn't count against the controlling Power. If France takes over a Turkish key (in a pact with Britain), it just feels better to me that France gains, but Britain can basically write it off for no effect. YMMV

Napoleon 4th Ed. sounds really cool! It would be neat if the terrain on the strategic map affected the distribution of terrain blocks on the tactical map. For example, if the battle is taking place in a hex that is predominantly forest, then the you'd be more likely to draw forest terrain on the tactical map. Still possible to draw the others, of course, just allowing the strategic level terrain to adjust the odds. I wonder if that would be too fiddly though.
@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs7 жыл бұрын
The little green blocks are a nice little fog twist
@gregschmittgens12627 жыл бұрын
I agree. That was my main concern with what I heard while we were taping. Yes, occasionally troops would stumble into unexpected terrain. But if the terrain was too favorable to the Defender, it seems like they would go around rather than engage. JMO but it affects my feelings for the game.

Very interesting. I've played La Bataile de Moscow at my led club in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK. As the table was 18 ft. X. 6 ft.. We had plenty of room with 6 players per side. Utter chaos! I've also played 1814 Napoleon at Bay by Kevin Zucker the AH version. The battles were. Fought on the table with miniatures. As I no longer live near a Wargames club I have to play solo. I miss the company, but I still argue with the enemy player, me. This is a bit worrying but no one. is plotting against me yet ;-) Mike Leese. North Wales . UK

While an interesting episode with some fun games, I was disappointed to see Kevin Sucker's OSG games with just a mention and no discussion of Clash or Arms or Marshall Enterprise's La Bat Series. AH's War and Peace with it's updated version. My top 5: 5) Fading Glory - GMT (but most of the VPG Napoleonic will do. Decent intro games to Napoleonic warfare. 4) War and Peace - Strategic contest with good scenarios. Have not tried Version 4. Campaign is difficult for the French 3) Napoleon at Leipzig 5th ed- OSG. Kevin Zucker's Series on the Battles of Napoleon in grand tactical level bring this original games from the 70's to a 2015 form. Cards, approach to battle and a set of rules that will cover some 80+ battles. 2) La Bataille des Quatre Bras - Clash of Arms - Beautiful games the focus of the tactical level of play. La Bat QB is a good introductory games to this series which gets into monsters such as Waterloo, Borodin and Leipzig. 1) Napoleon at Bay -3rd Ed - OSG. Kevin Zucker's Campaigns of Napoleon Series. Beautiful system that focuses on maneuver, supply and concentration of force in attempting to defeat your opponents will to fight. Gives the big picture of the campaigns. A great game and a great series.

Age of Napoleon (light strategy scale - entire war), Napoleon Against Europe (heavier strategy, entire scale), Waterloo: Quelle Affaire! (tactical level with bluff mechanism) and Field Commander Napoleon (solitaire campaigns) are games i'd definitely recommend. If you want to put your teeth in a series i'd recommend the 'Jours de Gloire' series for single battles or the 'Jours de Gloire Campaign' series. Especially 'Jours de Gloire' for a good simulation of battles using the same system over and over. It is just map and counter based. Nothing fancy. But finetuned over what may now be 2 or more decades. Superlight and semi abstract i'd recommend Manoeuvre from GMT Games. For a lighter series Fading Glory and the Napoleon20 system are excellent.

I think you are referring to the 1970 movie Waterloo, starring Ron Steiger, with action scenes filmed in the Soviet Union, as thousands of Soviet soldiers dressed up in 1815-era uniforms for the Waterloo battle. Loved the aerial shots of the cavalry charging the squares. Bondarchuk did make a War and Peace movie in 1968, also stunning, but with no Waterloo battle.

You correct, sir. I got my Bondarchuks confused. He directed both War and Peace and Waterloo.

I suck at pronunciations. At my work, we had a bunch of Canadian (Quebec) dealers visiting, so I bring in A Few Acres of Snow and Wilderness War and set the maps up on a table. So pardon this question from an old guy: How does the 1980s Avalon Hill game Empires in Arms rate among those in the hobby now? Why didn't it get into the top five list of HAMTAG? I always thought it was a pretty good system.
@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs7 жыл бұрын
A couple things John. It can be tough to narrow any list down to just 5 games...but that's part of what makes it fun. There are 100's of war games (if not thousands) we can pick from for our Top 5. Then each of us is a bit of a different type of war gamer. I really like this part. I (bart) am very much a lighter side of war gamer. I see Greg as more of the Grognard and Judd is a bit of both with some wild and crazy whimsy thrown in. And I've never played Empires in Arms so it wasn't going to make my list. Nothing against the game it is probably awesome. We pick from what we know and hopefully its fun and entertaining along the way. Great comment. Keep them coming and good to see you getting back into war gaming.
@johnsakelaris77 жыл бұрын
Fair enough Bart. Any others who have played Empires in Arms are welcome to give their views on that game, of course. Above I will make a separate comment on a problem in strategic Napoleonic games.
@ErwinLau4 жыл бұрын
John Sakelaris I hope this comment is not too late. EiA is still highly regarded. However people have less time to play now and becomes less patient to wait for other player’s move. I would not put it into my top 5 list too as I have not played it for like two decades. Napoleonic Wars, a CDG by Mark McLaughlin of War & Peace fame, has become the go-to game in our gaming group as far as strategic game goes.

I agree. It's good for one play. It doesn't have that cool Euro-thing going on. It's just dice placement roles, like War of the Ring. There is a Shiloh game where a seasoned wargame designer took this model and added on to it and made a much better game. Not sure I'd recommend it retail, though. Get it in a Pay it Forward or a Trade.

Great Episode. I have played quite a few series. For strategic I like Age of Napoleon by Mayfair/Phalanx. Not overly complicated, cards, flavor etc. I have played Napoleonic Wars too. Empires in Arms: unpunched. I have played Zucker's stuff. Napoleon at the Crossroads is a 2X design. Operational level, kind of like what Greg describes. Also have Habit of Victory, and some of the Days serie, but haven't played these. The NLB (Napoleonic Library Battles) is also Zucker material. It is quasi-tactical, but there is no facing, reminiscent of the SPI/Decision Games Napoleon's Last Battles. I am collecting these. Maps are stunning. I have played most of these. Richard Berg has some tactical in The Triumph and Glory system (GMT) These do have facing, but I like Zucker's NLB better. The Gamers NBS (Napoleonic Battles Series) is similar to the Civil War Brigade series. written orders etc. The most recent rules version that came with Talavera (free pdf on the website) are A-1. I haven't tried LaBat and probably won't.

Judd... interesting games... how much were the expansion armies? Greg... hadn't figured Maneuver into my buy list, but I'll have to look at it. Strange that none of you picked the DVG Napoleon game (amazing!), the AH block Napoleon game, or AH's "Waterloo", which might have been basic but strategic to play. Somewhat surprised that Chief didn't pick Marengo from Pub Battles... interesting. Love the top 5's... maybe a topic?... Top 5 games NOT associated with the BIG WARS... Crimean War, Russo-Japanese War 1905, Seminole War, Reunification of italy (Garibaldi, 1859), Asian Wars, First Nation Wars, Boer War, Mexican-American War, etc.
@juddvance77217 жыл бұрын
I had the DVG game but traded it. I think most folks consider it the best of the Field Commander games, but I actually prefer Alexander. That's because I'm not a big Napoleon guy. But the Napoleon DVG game had a better combat system than the Alexander and Rommel game. I got two of the expansions for $27.50 at GMT's fall sale. I got another one for Christmas (probably the same way: my wife gets me P500 games and qualifies for the fall sale half price). I got another on Amazon for $45.
