I worked in a shelter and now work as security on a resort. I’ve used a defibrillator more times than I can count but it never once occurred to me that you could place it on the casualty as a proactive measure. At work, our security team is often the first responders to medical emergencies and just watching this episode may have just helped me save someone’s life more effectively one day. Hats off all the way to these men and women.

I find it really interesting that after a really emotional or stressful call EMTs can be put offline for a bit while they take a bit to regroup. But with the lifeguards, they don't really have that chance since often its most of them on the beach involved in the situation so they don't have backup to cover them after emotionally draining rescues.

I live on the east coast of Canada near the Atlantic Ocean. We have beautiful, sandy beaches & warm water. I can't tell you the number of times my friends & siblings headed for the beach after work. I wonder what the clerical work for this kind of job is like for rescues, not just resuses. Do they have to make a report of some kind for each rescue, or more like a general report for the day? It's the part no one thinks about but there's got to be something. Must be a tricky balancing act between watching the water and doing the paperwork depending on what it is.

I'm sure the duty manager takes care of most of the paperwork after getting the gist of it from the lifeguard (s) that did the saving
