Given that I have never tried magnet fishing, I feel the need to make a suggestion :-) If you cut the bottom out of a plastic bottle and run the rope through it so that the large end faces the magnet it should reduce the number of snags that you get. You might need to tie a knot in the rope to keep the bottle where you want it. But maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

There's a bike frame at a bank near us and it's just attached to a light pole wire that's grounded in the sidewalk. It had tires only they went first and then the seat and then the handlebars

Expecting to find something genuinely valuable in a canal, many years after people started magnet fishing is more than a bit fantastical. Better to just treat it like mudlarking, where a treasured find is literally a glass bottle. Low value stuff like the coins can still be fun to collect. Personally I'd be stoked about finding the crab and eel.
