I am glad Gary got better. I know what it's like having a dog that's a scavenger. My Cleo thinks everything on the floor during walks is food. I've had her nearly 11 years and I couldn't train it out of her. And there's only so many times I can pry her jaws open to stop her from swallowing inedible things. So now she wears a muzzle. It was a last resort but at least now she cannot attempt to eat broken glass, cooked chicken bones from people's takeaways, chewing gum that someone spat out, ice lolly sticks... The list is endless.

I just cannot understand why people are so against surgery. Obviously you don’t go there unless you have to, but which do you prefer - surgery, or a dead dog? A dog usually recovers incredibly quickly too. We have a chihuhua who is really tiny, about 5llbs in weight, and she had to have a hysterectomy for a closed pyometra, (which presented with no obvious symptoms). She had a 50% chance of surviving, but the day after her operation, you wouldn’t have thought anything had happened. We had the devil of a job to keep her quiet and calm, she just wanted to get on with things as usual!!
@mgm20082 жыл бұрын
Not every animal makes it through surgery alive! Getting put under is high risk! Also several develop infections after surgery. Also it's very expensive and many people didn't plan for these types of expenses when they get pets. Very glad that your pet did so well!!!
@Kirmeins2 жыл бұрын
The chance of him passing some sand with some helpful liquids the vets could give him was very high despite what the wording in this clip might imply. Trying that before thinking about surgery for something like that is the smart thing. Because surgery of intestines is very tricky due to the infection risks (on top of other risks that come with any surgery). It's simply not worth the risk for a specific case like this. If it had been something that was more likely to get stuck (like a big ball) or more likely to hurt the intestinal walls (like sharp bones or glass) the decision would have fallen to surgery for sure.
@Sabouma282 жыл бұрын
surgeries on animals can be very, very expensive, so that would be one big reason not to go through with it
@sarahholland26002 жыл бұрын
From watching far too many get shows (😁), they always prefer to see if swallowed stuff will pass with some waiting first , as surgery in that area is so tricky.

This JUST happened to me and my little longhaired doxie girl, Polllyann....who looks exactly like Gary, except she is 17 years old!!! 5 weeks ago I caught her eating sand at the beach and stopped her...twice. She actually must have passed the sand through her intestines, as it was the following day that she refused to eat breakfast, then vomited her dinner from the night before. She would NOT have survived surgery at her age. I was freaked. She's been my whole world AND my service dog all her life. But x-rays at the emergency vet showed her colon was full of sand...she was placed on I.V. fluids, staying overnight, and was successfully flushed out!!! My little angel is still on a half and half bland diet of chicken and rice with regular dog food, the kind for digestive health, as we await the absence of soft poos a few days in a row. She is one amazing, tough little girl, and is finally doing well. Her 17th birthday is in 2 weeks!!!!! I am so grateful for the vet. Due to Covid, I had to wait 2 days in the parking lot, a 90-minute drive from home, and couldn't see her till it was all over. I am thrilled she is fine! A friend sent me this video and it took me 3 days to finally watch it....bad memories!

Question: Why would the Dachshund eat sand... or was it kitty litter like that?
@Kirmeins2 жыл бұрын
There was probably some kind of tasty liquid all over it that made him just choke it down. On a beach, anything would be possible. There was talk about ice cream in the beginning of the clip so that might very well have been what soaked the sand and made him think it's edible.
