Our cat Buttercup had a leg amputated for cancer. She lived for a long time after surgery and enjoyed a trip across country. We had promised Buttercup we would take her with us, and we upheld that promise! We visited Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and finally home! It was a wonderful trip. We spent time with family in many states, and Buttercup had the opportunity to meet their four legged family members! Once more, she proved to be the official greeter! Buttercup was totally amazed when we let her walk around the pet area at the many roadside rest areas where we stopped (she has always been an indoor cat). She would sit and look up at us, as if to say "Are you sure it is ok for me to be here? What is that long thing you have attached to my collar?" She even had an opportunity to play in snow - which she said was interesting, but definitely too cold! As you can see from the picture, Buttercup took her turn guarding the car and driving (?). Buttercup is an adorable, loving, independent cat who loves to sleep next to me every night! Most of all, she is a very courageous cat. She does not allow the amputation to slow her down. She goes up and down the steps, which are quite steep, several times a day so she can play with our other cats and dogs.

I've never wanted to hug someone as much as I want to hug Laura, Archie's mom. I wish them the best from the bottom of my heart - I truly hope they are still at eachother's side.

I misread the title initially as "Brave Dog Loses Fight Against Invasive Cancer" and was thrilled to find out I did so! So glad Archie lived and hopefully the cancer treatments help Holly.

SO glad to see a rabbit savvy vet on this episode! Many rabbit owners aren't even aware of GI stasis and don't realize it's an emergency when a rabbit stops eating or pooping. They did a great job helping Charlie.

Don't get me wrong, I'm so glad that the beautiful lady that owns Archie has so many people helping her with her decision about his leg because she's been through a lot. But the last episode I watched, a lovely cat called Merlin had to have a leg amputated after being hit by a car and it was literally a two minute conversation with the owner, he'll be better off without the leg and the owner just wanted the best for the cat so he was like, yeah ok and that was it, they took Merlin's leg off! Why is it so different for a cat!!! That being said, I do hope that Archie will be with her for as long as possible, she is a lovely, lovely person and it's incredibly sad that she lost her husband so young, I don't want her to lose her dog ever but at least hopefully not soon!!!

I think cats have been seen to do better with 3 legs than a dog would. Cats are impressive little floofs 😂 My guess is that Archie being such a big Great Dane would make it that having 3 legs would still be more difficult for his quality of life, but ultimately less difficult than having the pain and risk for the cancer spreading.

To be fair, the cat was a far more emergent situation. Cancer treatment is more complicated in nature than being hit by a car. When hit by a car all the cards are in front of you, with cancer it could come back elsewhere, it could complicate the treatments he's already getting, not to mention that he's quite old by great dane standards. The cards are rarely all visible with cancer. It can definitely be a scary decision, especially with a front leg! That being said, i have two three legged dogs myself (one of them from being hit by a car!). I know what i would choose, and i think most people believe amputation is.... well, a far larger deal than it is to be frank.

@geminibutts lots of good points. Definitely a more complicated thing with this lovely doggy. I'm similar to you in that I don't see it as such a big deal because I've known many dogs with 3 legs and they were fantastic. But in this case, I think it was good that they were so cautious with Archie, his owner has been through some major trauma and she needed to have people like that around her to support her in her decisions. I felt so sad for her that I think I focused more on that and was like, if it means she can have him for longer then chop it off now!!!

People antropomorphize their pets a lot, but neither cats nor dogs know "OMG I'm now incomplete", they just move on, happy to go back to their humans and activities. It's by no means a trivial thing, but not as traumatic as humans make it out to be sometimes.

I rescued a cat who had lived on the streets for many years. Vet thought she was around 13 years old. She was bad with arthritis when we first got her. I got Green Lip Mussel for her and the improvement within just 2 weeks was amazing. We had her for just under 5 years when she passed suddenly from a saddle thrombosis. At least she had a few years as an indoor cat, warm, fed and loved. Miss you Tia.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but Danes, even older ones, seem to adapt to being tripawds, Archie might benefit from a cart at some point.

@garyallen8824What are you talking about, this dog has a shitload of life left in him and you would see her get rid of him not to remind her of her loved one passing away? Animals aren't items you can just throw away and replace when it gets difficult. What she did was what we all should - do what's best for the animal. The treatment failed, this is the reason for amputation.

I’m sorry, but in Archie’s case. Why would she feel conflicted about taking off the cancerous leg? Like why is she thinking about him not being whole and not thinking about he’ll be alive if they take the leg.

Maybe if the doctor used a pastry bag with a tip to fill the large syringe with food, she might have an easier, less messy time trying to feed rabbits and other animals that need it.

I have two three legged dogs. They dig, jump, play, sprint, gallop, climb, and do anything else that a four legged dog can do! My front amp dog is slightly more hindered than my hind amp dog but in the end that's just how the cards lay. Doggie amputees still have wonderful, full lives
