I work owner surrender cases for a rescue specializing in senior dogs and in my experience people don’t give up their senior pups without a good reason. Deaths, nursing home, financial and health changes. I’ve taken 3 of my own fosters into care directly from their owners and it was horrifically difficult on all of those owners. Watching those goodbyes is not something you can forget and it broke my heart to see every time. But they made the decision to put their dogs needs first when they realized they could no longer care for them properly. It might seem horrible to give up a senior dog but to me it’s an act of love to put their needs first.
@sarahberlaud42854 жыл бұрын
Agreed, fully... but since they usually know the backstory of how a pet got to the pound on this show, I don't think it's like that in Arnie's case. Also, the state of his health was so poor, and not something that would've happened overnight. Possibly the previous owners couldn't afford things such as surgery on that growth, but they should have been brushing his teeth and taking care of him in other, inexpensive ways. My husband and I had to leave his home country, and we left our beloved cat with his mother, in the countryside, where he was happy (and he had always travelled with us, even on social outings, and so was familiar with the people and the place). It was absolutely heart wrenching, even though we were able to receive news, photos, and cuddles when we returned home for visits. In our cat's specific situation, the journey in an aircraft carrier would have been very risky, and we knew it was best for him... it was so hard, though. Bless you for taking care of rescues, by the way
@Kirmeins4 жыл бұрын
@@sarahberlaud4285 Tell that to the 80 year old who barely manages to brush his own teeth, is shortsighted and very forgetful... :( And as nice as it seems to believe they would tell us the truth and only the truth I'm actually 90% certain that they like to tell half truths and/or overly dramatic stories instead to bring across a point. Which musn't be a bad thing as it should get people thinking. But raging on unknown previous owners of that specific dog when you cannot be sure of the real story is just unfair! Sentences like "I can't believe someone would dumb their old dog" is *very* vague and tells you nothing about the dogs story. For all we know his owner died or was forced to move into a retirement home. They might've had only a distant family member left who had no choice but to bring the dog to the pound. Or there was noone left and the dog was picked up by the police and brought to the pound. No backstory would be available in such a case. At least someone cared enough that he ended up with people who could help him and find a new home. Lucky boy :)

@sarahberlaud42854 жыл бұрын
@@Kirmeins That's a fair point, and we'll never know for sure the circumstances. I'm with you that I'm just so overjoyed for him that he ended up with good veterinary care and a loving home! The only reason I guess I think that they tend to tell us the truth is that a number of times on Dr. Lisa's spinoff, where she rehomes rescue dogs, they've explained the backstory as being, "the owners were no longer able to take care of him due to illness," or "the owners were moving and weren't able to bring him along." But you're right that it's TV, and if they want to push a certain narrative, they definitely could.

I love this episode. :) Many in the comments are suggesting maybe Arnie's previous owners were elderly and couldn't care for him. But another possibility is that they were just too poor to take him to the vet, but loved him for years. My own experience is we had a dog when I was growing up that started to have dental issues and growths that slowly appeared over years. We loved him dearly, but the vet bills were to expensive for our family to do more than the basic shots necessary. We can make assumptions about dogs like this, but we can never truly know their history and what they've gone through (good or bad). We can just make sure that their life from now on is a good one.

Entirely possible Arnie's original owner(s) was elderly, either passed or was transfered to a care facility, and the family wasn't interested to help him (or couldn't afford to) take care of all his issues that original elderly owners either didn't notice or didn't know to care about (due to growing disability or dementia.)

It's tragic when an animal has to be surrendered because of the cost of vet care.
@elisabethb.1313 жыл бұрын
It's possible, however somewhere after the 5:40 mark, Scott says Arnie was dumped. If someone can't take care of, or afford a dog, there are other options. An elderly person who can no longer take care of a dog, can surrender it to a rescue organisation or their vet with a simple phone call. That's what many of those organisations exist for. If the person doesn't or can't do that, then their family/caretaker has a responsibility to step in because neglecting a pet falls under animal cruelty in UK law. Things like rotten teeth can be painful, so neglect is cruel. Even if it happens unintentionally.
@jroar1233 жыл бұрын
I once worked as an animal control officer (dog catcher). I couldn’t do the job because it just broke my heart having perfectly good animals destroyed because nobody was trying to get them adopted. @elisabethb.1314 жыл бұрын
They said he'd been dumped. If someone can no longer afford or take care of a pet they can give them up to one of many organizations that can help in situations like that. What often happens when an owner passes away or is moved to a home though is that the heirs or executor(s) of the owners estate don't want the dog or don't feel responsible for it and abandon it. People like that wouldn't be bonded with the dog, so they are more likely to not care.
@Kirmeins4 жыл бұрын
@@elisabethb.131 And what to people usually call it when you "give up your dog to one of the many organizations"? Oh, thats right! They'll say the person "dumped the dog"... they make no difference between actually walking the dog inside, leaving him at the front step or tying him up at the roadside with a letter attached... but that is a huge difference which doesn't get mentioned in order to make a point in your pro animal series - which isn't a bad thing but us people watching should always be aware that what we hear is clouded by our perception and the way the show delivers the story. ;)

I loved seeing Maise and Daisy one week old. I was with the STOP (Sea Turtle Oversight Protection) Program on our beaches for a number of years. We would see the mamas come up out of the ocean and onto the beach. She dug the nest and deposited the eggs. We marked and corded off the nests and monitored the nests and protected them against predators. Some were two legged! After their gestation period, the babies were ready to hatch.. We monitored the nests, and were there for the hatch out. The tortoises, were in the nearby State Park and had their tunnels and we had many that were quite old. The tortoises uses lived under ground in tunnels and shares their nest with other species. The sea turtles live in the water. They travel all around the Atlantic basin. Amazingly, they come back to within 5 miles from where they were born to lay their eggs. We worked with our Wildlife and Conservation Groups. Many times students from our Universities studying the marine sciences, came out to patrol at night near hatch out times. They also learned to track the 7 species of turtles that came to Florida, USA every year. It Is a wonderful way to preserve these creatures for future generations.

In the United States telling the shelter the dog nipped or bit a child is an automatic death sentence for them at most shelters. So happy for Arnie. And the baby tortoises from 100+ year old parents is amazing. An cute little Coco. My dad raised pugs when I was a kid. Such a happy episode. (Jan Griffiths).

I am very glad to see Arnie found himself a good home in the end, and it's very nice to see this show promoting shelters and the work they do! But I do react to both Scott and the two volunteer women just jumping to the conclusion that Arnie was abandoned and even assuming he's had a bad owner all his life when it could very well have been an owner who no longer was capable of looking after him, and was heartbroken to give him up when they realised it didn't work anymore. Personally I'm thinking that a dog like Arnie wouldn't have lived to fourteen years of age with "only" those issues in his old age if his previous home had neglected and abused him. So I'd wish that a show catering to most age groups and an international audience on KZbin was a little less judgemental, unless Scott and his co-workers knew something that we as viewers were not informed about. Also, "does she have any health issues?" - "No, none!" - Pug sits on the table and snores through every breath with a wide open mouth XD

Scott says Arnie was "dumped" at 5:50. This could very well mean that he was left somewhere by a car or tied to a tree. They don't go into further details, but I'm sure that if Arnie was properly surrendered to a vet or rescue organisation, Scott wouldn't have used the word "dumped".
