I hear you but my diet is great (dairy/mammal-free for decades), I workout regularly, even play roller derby and yet... I still have OP at 53. I think something's missing here.

I'm a 62 yr old, 120 lb, long-term vegan with a T score of 4 in the spine. It hurts to garden the last two years. The endocrinologist prescribed daily injections of Forteo I have not started. Diet with dairy products was recommended. (Tofu has more calcium than yogurt! ) Walking was encouraged after I brought it up. I've been learning about osteogenics/bone growth through weight bearing exercise and high impact so I am now doing weight machines & jog for at least 30 mins for the impact at least 4 days a wk but working up to 7 days a week. I eat more greens now for the magnesium/calcium absorption & plant based calcium foods too. I was afraid of calcium supplements because I get chronic kidney stones so may take those too. Dr suggested I see a kidney Dr. I've reduced salt & drink more water. I may not take the Forteo as I've made so many changes based on science for bone growth but it's hard to know what to do given the risks of fracture & how long it might take to build bone on my own. I had ASD/surgery & an ablation 9 yrs ago for atrial flutter so the side effects of Forteo of having heart attack or fibrillation scares the heck out of me though doc said side effects were in rats not humans..sigh. It's good to hear your opinion Dr Klaper to help me with my decision. Thank you so much.

I try the same as you, to get stronger bones, and health, with changing poor lifestile to much stronger lifestile. Yes, scaring that rats have got cancer from the Forsteodrugs. There is something wrong with all this scanning and scores, it fells like there is a big lack of understanding, there is missing so much knowledge in explanation with this t-score and bone health. For example, you can be stronger with a bad score, and weaker with a good score, nobody seems to know more.... And then the next parameter is "have you have break down in bones" . I find it not convincing enough ...

This is great info but what if you’ve been on drugs like glucosteroids/prednisone and or PPIs longterm (mths/yrs) and either at high risk for moderate to severe osteoporosis and fracture or have both and already vegan/WFPB/ following advice of Drs like yourself? Much advice given on prevention or treatment w diet/exercise but (effectively) covering longterm use of drugs proven to leach calcium from the body, protein etc (key nutrients for bone health). Also given many on these drugs are the unable exercise effectively to do much good in terms of bone health. Advice is also given to avoid calcium supplements or supplements at all. Simply telling those already taking these drugs to not take them or get off them as fast as they can is not usually helpful (and most already know). Tapering can take months sometimes yrs and most have now been effectively scared of taking any drug ever but at times hypocritically- supplements are safe/OK/maybe/not. What’s missing is advice or guidance on what to do in the meantime? It seems this question is avoided by plant-based doctors. Though I on PCRM site Dr. Barnard on does cover this issue briefly and admits in some cases (bone) medications might be needed. But it’s never covered on videos (perhaps reasons of liability and or looking hypocritical which is fair). There are millions I’m sure who could benefit by a respected vegan Dr like you willing to address this on a video in an open honest way and willing to cover issue of maybe certain situations may call for temporary use of Bone drugs and if not then effective alternative suggestions would be welcomed and very much needed. Thank you. Edit: seems like PCRM site removed any reference to bone building drugs. No explanation. I guess the hope was nobody would notice? Also weighted vests aren’t safe for those with history of OP related fractures. Be careful.

If you have primary hyperparathyroidism and operating is not an option, what to do? The disease causes osteoporosis.

Hi Dr. K...I am mid 50s, 5’3” and 100lbs. Bought a 10lb best and walked daily and ended up with two frozen shoulders. Ugh! Took nearly a year to get range of motion back. What did I do wrong?

Did you make sure you were swinging your arms/shoulders? U get frozen shoulders from lack of shoulder movement

Yes I walk ad swing my arms. I was told by a PT that the weight on my shoulders likely narrowed the space in my shoulders and rubbed the tendon as I walked and move my arms.

Some thoughts on what might have happened to you. You might have started off with too heavy of a weighted vest and did not ease in to its use slowly. Dr. Klaper recommends up to an 8 lb weighted vest. Maybe it is best to start off with a lower weight and ease into the walks slowly, building up week by week. I am 107 lbs and wear a 12 lbs weighted vest, but I started off just a few days a week for 20 min to start. Also, the type of weighted vest can be a factor too, the way the weights are distributed. I got mine off of amazon. Let me know if you want the link. I am not sure if any of what I said is true or not, just my thoughts.

I will realy try this. This is my case: Contradiction in my case. . Doctors don't care about my Too high PTH leaves in blod, (but I doo) because there is not too much calcium in the blod.(I drink water without calcium, I don't know if it matters) To get cured from too much PTH production I have read, that "drink a lot every day" and don't eat ekstra pills of Calcium; then it will stabilize. The doctors say to me eat Ekstra calcium pills, and Alendronat once a week, And offers me Forsteo injektionen in 2 years instead of Alendronat. They are eksperts. BUT ....... Could I try to built up the bones by Walking with this west on, and eat healthy food that I did not do before. . I am afraid of Forsteo, because there has been rats getting cancer from too much of Forsteo. Forsteo is released under the condition that it is only used 2 years the most, and then never more in your life, because they don't know the effect long-term. I don't want to get cancer. That is worse than bad bones. Bones can get stronger by effort every day.... every day..... ( They found that my d3 leaves was 12.... it is build up and normal now. ...) d3 deficiency a reason for pure bone health too. what shall I do????
