Aside from being a great film, the writing is next level. “Why do you hate savages?””Just ask my wife and daughter” “I don’t believe I ever met them” “That’s right. You never did”

You should check out S. Craig Zahler's novels as well! His two Western novels "Wraiths of the Broken Land" and "A Congregation of Jackals" are two more stories that take place in the same universe as Bone Tomahawk. They have Zahler's great, well-developed characters, sharp/clever dialogue, and his signature horrific violence (some of the books' descriptions of violence are worse than what you SEE in Bone Tomahawk). His two more contemporary crime novels "The Slanted Gutter" and "Mean Business on North Ganson Street" are also fantastic. They take place in modern times but they still have that distinct Zahler style.

It's really just one scene. It is THAT much more disturbing because the movie doesn't set you up or prepare you for what you're about to see - one of the worst ways to die imaginable.

Up until that point I wasn't entirely against the cave dwellers. I could understand them being angry that their sacred sites had been defiled and seeking retribution against those who had wronged them. Then they did that and just nah brah. Them boys enjoy revelling in human pain. Monsters the lot of them.

You're so right about the smart characters. There's tons of little moments that make this movie so believable. For example: Sheriff Hunt tosses a cup full of sand on the fire when the Mexicans approach the camp! Dimming the fire so the group can see into the darkness easier but also making their camp darker. It's something you've never seen in a film before but TOTALLY believe was common practice in those times As brutal as some moments are, I wish Bone Tomahawk was more well known for being the beautifully shot/written Western that it is. It's a truly great film with SOME horrifying parts but it's known as this all-out, torture-porn, gorefest

A Serbian film? Men behind the sun? Salo or 160 days of Gomorrah? Heck, even Hostel is more graphic and "plausible". "The coffee table" "La mesita del comedor" arguably is more disturbing while being non graphic. But that one is hit or miss, some people give it a ten others a 0. Enjoyed Bone Tomahawk though.

@@azazelreficulmefistofelicu7158a lot of the movies you listed are just violence and depravity for the sake of violence and depravity tho. Bone Tomahawk is a much SCARIER film. Violence isn't scary but the pronounced bursts of violence from the Troglodytes give a sense of dread that looms over the whole movie. We're shown just enough violence to understand the stakes. The violence in Bone Tomahawk is also integral to the plot (can't throw the word savage around for an hour straight and not show us what they're capable of). A Serbian Film, Salo, Hostel, Terrifier, etc are a bunch of wishy-washy plots as an excuse for gratuitous gore. Bone Tomahawk feels bigger than that. You know and care for the characters because you know they're not just meat for the gore machine

I’d love to see a sequel but with completely new characters and maybe set in the northern Great Plains, like Montana or Wyoming and with a different tribe, but it’s probably just a pipe dream. For one, the bleached white newspaper at the beginning of the movie. News papers were yellow until the 1980s or even 90s I think. Also, women weren’t allowed to be doctors at that time. The barber was the doctor, barber, dentist and even soap salesman. Women weren’t allowed to receive that amount of education, even as an assistant.

As someone that likes watching videos ABOUT disturbing movies but not actually watch them, I have definitely heard of this one. I’m surprised there aren’t a lot of videos about it. I am never watching this movie. Just reading about certain scenes made me wince 😂. But I enjoyed this video 👍🏽

I just finished watching and..... Holy fuck that was grim. The scenes are absolutely as wince inducing to watch as they are to read. I have like, jitters or something lmfao. I loved it though, it is pretty incredible how well written it is and the casting is excellent. worth a watch even if you skip through the harder scenes to watch. Those had me get up and pace around the room while watching hahahaha

This weirds me out a bit, but I have vivid memories of seeing this and I'm 100% I've seen it, but somehow I don't remember a single horror element from the movie, and I just remember it as a kind of standard but well-acted cowboy movie. Is there a weird non-horror cut of this or something that I accidentally watched?

Jesus! I just watched this damn movie as a random Netflix pick. I thought it was just a western! I had never heard of this movie. I was so NOT prepared for the swerve into real visceral horror towards the end. I watch a lot of horror but I usually know I'm watching a horror movie. It's also usually always more on the supernatural side rather than gore. So, I'd have liked to have known which genre I was watching before going into this. I heard some of the talk about these people but I thought it was just an over exaggeration about a particularly violent tribe. I never expected them to be actual monsters. So, yes I am very disturbed and creeped out at 3 a.m. I suspect I will be disturbed for a while.

The only problem I had with this film was why didn’t they let the “creatures” be? It wasn’t like they were invading their town or anything. The only time anyone got in danger is when they went into their territory, as I recall. They weren’t exactly expansionist inbred cannibals.

They'd kidnapped two residents of the town. The Sheriff was clear from the beginning that this was a rescue mission; not a revenge tour. It only turned into a bloodbath out of necessity.
