My dad will never forget seeing The Bonezone opera at Carnegie Hall. The case rode a real viking ship up from the aisles to the stage. Unfortunately the slope was too much the ship rolled out of control through the audience. My father would never forget it. No really, he still wakes up screaming about wanting out of the bonezone.

@@DerivativeWorker I thought for a moment that you was talking about the time they tore down the Carnegie hall, rebuilt it at the Niagara Falls and they had the famous Niagara Falls performance where they was standing on the Viking ship performing Bone Zone but sadly the steering motor on the Viking ship went out and the ship's backup security wires to the mainland failed leading to the ship careened to the side with the whole ship with the troup went over the water falls sadly leading to the death of the great Richard Slammer RIP Dick, your gorgeous voice could seduce men and women, he sadly passed young at 30 somehting year old, a great loss to late 1960's opera, there have never been a better performer than Richard

Sir, you have nailed it. Many muff their opening lines. After the premiere performance at La Scala (which I saw as an impoverished student, slipping in the backdoor) on Christmas Eve 1969 ('Bone Natalie', as the locals say), there was a little controversy as to whether the librettist, Bono Vox, had allowed the complex themes to create an impenetrable text. There were some who said that Sonny Bono would have written something with more thrust, something harder. There were and continue to be a spread of views, but I think it is hard to ignore the magnificence of this seminal text. Yes, it is complex, there are so many themes that one can easily miss the key concept that you have, so adroitly (if I may say so) identified, but when there is a lot to say that matters, the text surely must reflect this. Those who say otherwise are boneheads. There is the tragedy that Bono's other opera libretto, 'Gloryhola', never really stood up in the public imagination. Sliding into a deep hole, he rose to the challenge, beavered away for a decade, often travelling into the bush for inspiration, stuck at it, pounded away at his demons, before coming exactly where and when needed with Poo, Too, subsequently renamed/bowdlerized to U2 (the PR guy loved submarines), a band who knew how to bring an anthemic song to a climax. Some say he also worked for a band called Rising Force, but I don't know - the evidence is slippery.
