Taylor Russell's bangs were actually based on the character Stacy Hubka (played by Lauren Roselli) in The Silence of the Lambs, which was directed by one of Luca Guadagnino's favourite directors, Jonathan Demme. He even wrote his thesis on his films.

Loved your review. I think the reason why lee had a hard time talking about how he ate his dad is because although the feeders have no problem killing/eating strangers, they still obviously have a massive amount of love for their certain people. For example, Marin crying when abandoned by her father, and being broken up about her mothers condition. Or when they find out the gay married man had a family, they both become very stressed and upset. I think the scene of lee breaking down at the death of his father shows that although the man was abusive, and although lee enjoyed feeding on him, there is still some psychological torment that comes along with killing the man who brought you into the world. He’s still his son at the end of the day. And you could see through his relationship with his sister that he still cares and keeps in close contact with them. Sooo yeah they’re cannibals but they have an underlying “guilt” or understanding of valuing relationships outside of their horrible actions through feeding

I feel like the relationship between Lee and Merin is incredibly real and its never as simple as Lee's gay because he has sex with a guy. The queer subtext is so beautifully alluded to in this movie, but it's important to allow the possibility that, this does not have to be rooted in gay/straight. Lee to me, much like Merin in the early scene with the teenager whose finger she eats, may indeed have a fluid sexuality, that they both share. There is an arousal connected to their eating and I don't think its specific to gender, nor does it need to be spelt out in order for us to understand the use of cannibalisim analogy and their connection to each other. That's what so clever about the film to me. Maybe I'm sentimental but I read Lee's sex scene pre murder as his way of trying to share something beautiful with the fairground guy before he took his life. Merin doesn't judge him for this, nor does it break their relationship. As someone who is attracted to all genders, this film would have meant so much to me if I'd seen it as teenager. Its the non explanation that I think is also its strength.

@@IKIRU2 Are you telling me to see watch it? I've seen it, I love it. But I think that Guadagnino is capable (and candid) about directing narratives he doesn't force simplistic or singular meanings onto. I also think he's been vocal about not being reductive and entirely capable of making different narratives with different characters that don't all represent the same story. It's why I think he's so good at what he does. He allows for complexities. That includes not assuming binaries.

I think it's interesting how you thought Lee was gay. I didn't think that at all. Since all of the actors, especially Timothee, have talked cannibalism being trauma, your shadow side, etc that scene was all about desperation. In order to eat, he had to have relations with a man. In other words, at all costs.Trauma and addiction can work that way. When trauma is not dealt with or suppressed one will do anything to hide it.

So yes he plays a gay character just like he did in CMBYN. I think Luca sees Tim as his fantasy lover in these films and Tim seems to find it exciting so, go figure.

I tried to like this movie, I really did but the bangs, the greasy hair, Lee looks like a meth head, the fact that there's no explanation for why these people can just eat entire people which I realize in the long scheme of things doesn't matter but I enjoy the how's and why's and that creepy old pervy man, this whole movie seemed like it was so good but I just couldn't. My grandma gave me bangs like that in the 90s on accident and I absolutely hated them, there was nothing you could do with them but just let them hang on your face and if you slept wrong there's no fixing them

My theory ... 1) Many believe addiction is passed down, even hereditary. The flashbacks of her father "eating" shows she was exposed to this early on. Like addiction, whether it's hereditary or not, she was always destined to be an "eater" as well. 2) through her travels she found love, comfort, and companionship with other eaters. Much like addicts, they gravitate towards other addicts and can even "sense" them much like the eaters did in the film. Later on when they find a way to suppress the "addiction" an eater from the past emerges to pull them back in. This is common with drug addiction as well. 3) the scene where she met two other eaters it was discovered one had the genetic curse, and the other "chose" to be an eater. Like the previous statement, whether hereditary or chosen, addiction hits individuals in different ways. 4) in the end the addiction has such a stronghold that it ultimately claims the life of a person close to you. Such is true with the "eaters."

I just saw this today and enjoyed it! Sully annoyed me with his obsession because it just reminded me of some men struggling with rejection. It’s like, MF she isn’t interested! Anyway, the scene with her mother was something. At one point I was thinking Sully did something to the mom (somehow) because all her hair was cut, and when Merin visited her moms adopted mom, she had long hair in the photographs. I am not sure how I put that together. 🥴

I watched this movie last night on a First date. Long story short we made out most of the movie to the sounds of screaming and Bones crunching with me sneaking a peak at a shirtless Timothee every time he came on screen because… I’m a heterosexual female 🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean I’m sure gay men , gay women, trans, anything with a heartbeat, fruits vegetables and certain spices and starches are attracted to his beauty. Am I wrong there? Are gay men, respectfully, as attracted to him as females are? And obviously I’m talking on a very superficial level here but there’s something so alluring about him that I didn’t even look at the girl when they were on screen together. Although Mark Rylance while not “conventionally attractive” has that alluring quality simply because he’s one of the best actors I’ve seen in awhile and (like in the film) he seemingly came out of nowhere. When your Steven Spielberg’s muse you know your something special. That being said I wish I had paid more attention because at the end my date who was facing the screen said “she ate him” 🤷🏻‍♂️…… So I have a lot of unanswered questions such as, why does she eat him and what happens to her after? Also how are they surviving in Michigan together without “feeding”? I could relate to some of the themes in this movie because I was once a teenager in Michigan in the late 80’s. (1989 I was 13 and in love for the first time with a beautiful boy like Timothee. It almost aches to think about those times because it was first love and, while not cannibals lol we had a rebellious streak and were always sneaking away to see each other. I did catch the Chloe Sevingny scene and it scared the crap out of me. The first movie I saw her in “KIDS” was disturbing because she catches HIV also from someone named Sully . My date by the way ended about as well as things did for the victims in the movie 😒😔. So in retrospect I should have paid more attention instead of making out with some guy I’m sure I’ll never hear from again.

I got around to watching the film and... I just don't get the hype or praise people get for this film. The only two pros I can give the film is that it's well shot and the music is nice. Timothee looks so out of place in the film and I don't get the love story. It reminded me a bit of, and I hate mentioning it, of Twilight (especially with the end). I didn't like any of the characters and the only scene that got any scares out of me was the asylum scene. I haven't been a fan of Luca because of Call Me By Your Name and he hasn't really made a film that impressed me.

I have a feeling that Luca has a weird pedo obsession with Timothee and he thinks that putting him in his films will help draw in the YA and LGBT crowds. I didn't like the remake of Suspiria but I like the score. The score in Bones and All was a bit unsettling but ok because I like Trent Renzor and Atticus Ross.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone bring up yet, is that each male that we see Lee kill to eat, is an overt asshole...As you watch him carefully in the scene with Jake Horowitz, he acknowledges what a jerk Horowitz's character is; how horribly he treats the little boy..in the earlier scene, he chooses the male in the market who is harassing a woman in the store...there is no backstory to suggest he is gay..his sister doesn't call him gay..she just says he looks like "a faggot" in that shirt...I think that Lee's character by this time in the movie has honed his skills in drawing in prey..he senses Horrowitz's weakness for men, and uses it to draw him into the cornfield...gets him into the most compromising situation, thereby making it easier to kill him without a fight...just as he intentionally feels out the first guy's weakness in the store, to look like a badass..so Lee draws him into a potential fight situation..His moral compass. is really interesting because each of his victims in the movie are "vile or horrible" human beings in some way, so in this way, he feels justified in having chosen them...

You two are really funny. This is Romeo & Juliet as cannibals directed by a queer..Luca keeps using Tim to highlight the fact that he thinks all young men are potentially gay/bi. By doing this he draws in the GenZ and LBGQT communities to his films. Cleaver way for a European director to make a name for himself in the States AND make tons of money. I think the nomination should go to Rylance because his creepiness has layer's to it.. Also I'm kinda a fan of Tim Chalamet and Luca has directed two films where the young men are portrayed as gay. Do we have a theme going on here.? The film is beautifully shot and the soundtrack edgy. The performances by all the cast are good and this Director cunningly brings that out of his actors as an "Uncle" figure while actually portraying some pretty dark material.

I think the director has a weird obsession with Timothee and I wasn't a fan of Call Me By Your Name because the "romance," came off as a groomer's tale (grooming is when predators earn their prey's trust and then that's just weird especially given how one of the stars is now a confirmed predator. That being said I don't support Luca or any of his work.

It gets me spooked because this generation is being groomed by the media, technology, and the LBGQ community to think this is natural and if you don't agree they try to reframe it. I think, and this pisses me off since the Kevin Spacey thing is that some people, some not all, use the LGBT card to get away with this grooming agenda shit to sell it off as "normal." Well it's not. It's also disgusting that Luca used the "age limit in Italy." as an excuse to make that film (the character is a 17 year old while the older character is 27, a MAJOR age difference)! Hell, there were people who didn't like the film because it glamorized age gap relationships and even people who are part of the LGBT community didn't like the film. And it's weird that Timothee was in this film because he looked miscast. He has been good in some films, like The King, Beautiful Boy (the drug addiction movie with Steve Carell) and Little Women but he just looked out of place. Plus one of the characters in Bones and All just screamed pervert. I support the LGBT community but I don't support assholes or perverts.
