Im 43 and mostly skate street, rougher ground in my area. As much as I like the dragon wheels I think I’m going to like these better. I just got them (x97) today and only skated them for about 2hours. They felt less spongy slid better and more responsive when I pop. I didn’t feel a difference in body fatigue and again the wheel just felt better. On tricks. Time will tell but so far I think prefer the x97. Will go to the skatepark with smooth ground tomorrow to try them out there.

For riding on asphalt, I think I prefer Dragons. It's a much smoother ride. Less vibration. They are quieter. Slide-wise, I can't tell much difference on asphalt. They seem roughly the same. It almost seemed like the Dragons were a little easier to slide. I tested how far they roll going down a hill. The Dragons went a little further. I only put in a couple hours as well. My initial reaction is that Dragons will still be my preferred wheel for the type of skating I do, which is mostly riding hills. Cruising, ollies, and basic tricks. I generally, I just really don't care for hard wheels. They are rough on the feet and ankles. If they don't slide better, it's not worth the better "bark" sound when you are beating up your feet. I also compared to Bones STF 103A. STF are miserably slow and are an absolute nightmare on asphalt. Maybe they are good on smooth cement. X97 are tolerable. STF is useless with the advent of X97 IMHO. I never tried the 99A one. The 103A ones are unusable.

Thanks for the review. Mine just came in today. Fedex delivered them. A few snow flakes were hitting the ground at that point. Went in the garage and installed them. Looked outside. Snow on the ground and everything was wet. Can't wait to try them on asphalt, but, it looks like the weather is going to be sucking for several days.

@@jimmyhuang8730 Off the top of my head, I want to say I prefer the X97s. At first I wasn't too keen on the X97s compared to Dragons on the medium rough asphalt on the hill in front of my house. For roughish asphalt, I prefer the 93A Dragons. I can't tell all that much difference slide-wise compared to the X97s on that surface, but, they are a bit faster, and most importantly are just easier on the feet. Less vibration. I'll have to test the Spitfires again. I haven't ridden them much lately. I want to say they feel more plasticy. I think the X97s, kind of like the Dragons have more give to them. Shape-wise, I do like the Spitfire Conicals a lot. I kind of prefer that over a lot of the Powell/Bones wheels. Note, I'm not really doing any tricks though. Just cruising hills doing power slides and ollies. And so far I've only tested the X97s on asphalt. A medium rough area. And a really smooth area. Initially, I wasn't liking the X97s that much compared to the Dragons, and I still prefer the Dragons on rough asphalt, but, they are pretty rad on smooth asphalt. The sound is better for slides. I can't really tell a huge difference on slickness compared to Dragons on those surfaces. From what I remember, I think the Spitfires were slicker. I'll do a comparison and get back to you after I've refreshed my memory. But, again, I'm not really doing tricks like Dad Board is, doing blunt slides, etc. So, I can't really comment on what they would be like on a ramp on coping or what not. I'm planning on testing them on some masonite ramps, but, it's supposed to snow in a couple days and I'm not sure if I will get to the park before then.

@@jimmyhuang8730 I was thinking about trying to do a test tomorrow. We're supposed go get a bad snow storm on Thursday (Chicago area). My ankle is bothering me a little after skating today. I think you should do a follow-up of x97 vs dragon. Polyeurothane gets a "skin" from the mold process. Some longboard wheels sand this off to get the wheels to slide out of the box. Otherwise you gotta break them in. My first sesh with 97 ff4 they were super grippy on skate lite type material, but after a while they started to break loose more and felt more like 99a. Ultimately I went back to 99a for the slidability. I miss the smoother ride of the 97s, but I ride 58s so i can still get through crust.

Interesting, I have no problem with my Dragon Wheels on the smooth concrete at my home skate park. I'm sliding fine with my power slides, maybe its because Im light. And I skated mansonite today at the indoor ramp and they were fine, except for the brand new mansonite and saw dust from repairs. So I was slipping out a little. I feel they will be fine for me once the mansonite is broken in and the sawdust cleaned up. I love my Dragon Wheels. Interesting how personal experiences and the subjective nature in skateboarding can vary. I want to try the X formulas too. 🙌

i never thought much of 97a outside of some santacruz and oj wheels for some natas/oldschool setups...then i rode venture 6.1s and they make 99a feel like 101a at my local. Now 97a seems like a pretty viable option for those slick surfaced concrete parks littered in cali. If they make a conical/full shape or a radial type shape i might get some since i love big contact patch esp for powerslide/speed control. Plus ventures initiate slides like nothing. If you ride ventures definitely look at some 97a bc i have my second pair of 6.1s on a shelf bc theyre quite hectic compared to other trucks as far as how easily they powerslide if you land a little nose heavy on an air you find yourself in some trouble or get high sided quite easily in transition if you forget your riding ventures. As someone that likes to slash into grinds to a point where its down bad....you find yourself over lip back lipping before you know it. The way ventures blast and slide If you pull your back foot up to slash into a grind you could find yourself over lip with a harder wheel and ventures after switching from indys. Or if you like to slash/slide into back smiths. Its some "fun times" getting high sided or hanging up mid back smith lock in.

Any comment on the speed vs either F4, or either STF on smooth concrete? I skate a lot of bowls and usually do an SPF, which is the fastest I have found, but sometimes can be too slick. The F4 99s are about my limit on how slow I can put up with. I have the Dragons as well and they are faster than any other soft wheel I have skated, but I have relegated them to crust. I was hoping these would be at least the F4 99 speed.

@@dadboard I found them to be slightly slower on medium rough asphalt. I did a test rolling down a hill from the same spot. The dragons rolled further. I think what makes the difference is that harder wheels vibrate more, and hence slow the bearings down. I've found that softer wider wheels are fastest on medium rough asphalt. 80A AWOLs are the fastest ones I've tested. Rolled way further that smaller harder street wheels.

Id consider trying bones big balls 6 ball reds, or super swiss 6. 6 ball bearings were a nice "addition" to my quiver and they are very forgiving when landing airs or into transition downright HABIT forming bc you can land airs into transition and be partial about your foot placement or if your going to land back foot heavy or front foot while prepping for your next trick and they speed is well maintained. Ive also tried some nothing special ABEC 11 bearings with tighter races...which are also very smooth and forgiving/speed saving in transition. Though when they get dirty(and theyre pretty OK build quality) they become noticeably slow so they pretty much need to be cleaned/lubed often and are easier to maintain/keep fresh as a side/quiver setup. I even got some budget rush 6 ball bearings to try for an older/softer shaped deck as a tosser/side setup. If you like doing bs airs and want to choose if you land it back foot /front foot heavy and enjoy the fun of wall to wall speed/lines chained up. Definitely consider at least the reds big balls really fun park/transition bearings for sure.

i just bought some drangons in 58mm 93a to replace some 53mm slime balls that were 97 and they are way faster on these philly streets .the slime balls were crap back in the day and they still are crap.i dont thin k they make bullets besides the huge 66mm ones anymore.i havent tried these ones you just tested though but from what you said and others it sounds like i would like them better.im 49 and i just wiped out yesterday on a hill because the 93 dug like no other useable wheel i have ever used but they are so smooth and almost to fast.maybe im to old for this? no way m,an if i die at least i wont be in my recliner with shit staind drawers looking sorry.

Careful out there on those hills man! You’re braver than me. Hope the dragons work out for you, they’re a solid wheel especially if you’re on that east coast crust. They were a bit overkill for the ground I normally skate over here.

IMO these and dragons are strictly for the street and in a skatepark you want 99a+

They did that with mine too. I'm not complaining though. They sent them 2nd Day Air. I found that if you order small items like that from Skate One, they seem to use 2nd Day Air and you get them a lot quicker. If you order decks, it takes more like a week and they ship it ground.

What size are the deck and trucks you ride?

Lately I’ve been riding 8.38 but I do anything from 8.25 to 8.5 usually. Trucks are always 8.5

dragons are very bad on wood or skatlite i keep slipping out of things i could do no problem and had no confidence. that being said for a concrete park or parking lot dragons are the best wheel.

i skate bones STF and they are good but i sure find them grippy even tho they are 101a. i think ill buy spitfires next or some white wheels would be nice. good review btw and i found the hype about the dragon wheels to be a bit too much. ive never tried them and from ur review i wouldnt bother. last night i got back skating and was rusty as hell and was skating my 7.75 girl deck and was getting frustrated that i wasnt flipping the board well with my front foot just doing a kickflip. its like the girl deck is very mellow concave. im now gonna get back to skating my 8.13 flip setup as i have 2nd pair brand new tensor mag lights and it is my lightest setup and ive done quite a few good tricks on that size deck that i havent on others. the thing is when i got my second flip 8.13 deck it felt different and then i realised i had been skating my first flip decks nose haha so now i skate the nose as tail and ive never done this in my years skating. i know there is twin tails these days and i have never tried one. ive skated a 8.25 powell deck and that was good but i wanted a size smaller so i picked the 8.13 ive never skated a 8.125. ive skated a few 8inch decks and they have been ok but 8.13 and flip concave is what i love. that kickflip fakie on that bank on my insta has the cheech and chong deck with green tensor mags. also on that deck about a year ago i was practicing fakie big flip and was landing on it 90 and jumping off. then my friends wanted to leave to go home in the car so i said hey here last try and boom i did it and was shocked myself and even the look on my friends face said it all haha i couldnt believe it it was perfectly flipped 180 and i landed on it perfect no struggle or balance. i was like wtf that cant be real haha i got in the car and was talking about it and they didnt want to hear about it hahaha.
