Great advise Sifu. If you try to defend a lowkick with tan gerk you will be in a lot of pain!

GM Ip Ching is my Sigung and we don't use either of them in our system. I asked Sifu and he just said some lineages use them but Sigung did not. This video gives some perspective, especially when our emphasis, like in the video is to move forward.

This is the first time I've seen anyone outside my own lineage deflect a straight kick this way.

Yes you CAN use tan bong gerk at distance but not at long distance. if you can contact the enemy's knee area with your bridging surface, preferably the meaty part of the lower leg. For bong gerk it's the shin side of the leg so you have to rotate the leg so there's definitely not a bone clash. Knee angles are like the elbow angles of tan and bong sao, that's different angles from what you're showing for close range stuff here.

IF I were an instructor, I know I would discourage defending with the legs.

I tend to agree, I mean you pretty much have to time it perfect or you could be in trouble.

I mean, go and look at Muay Thai fights. The leg kicks and the roundhouse kicks are always telegraphed a bit because they put a lot of power on them. That's why Taekwondo kicks usually do not cause a lot of damage (unless they hit you in the head lol) but they are not that telegraphed

chi gerk is not practical for full power kicks- it is theoretical for dirty boxing type kicking tied up close range. be careful using this against trained fighters.

As he said step in and close the distance.

+gnicevids 1. Keep away and close in when there is a gap. 2. kick the round house with the bottom of the foot. 3. lifting leg and turn the bottom of the foot facing the inner side. There are can be infinitely solutions

usually low kicks come in 2 situations , Lkicks after punch [or chops or even kicks] (usually 2-3 punches) and if your structure are destroyed by the punches you most likely not gonna to defense it and get a low kick KO (which mean his kick paralyze your leg which often happens in kyokishin karate) , the second one is he want do make you slow/low/stun for a moment before he rush into you and burst you up , the crucial point is don't put your 100% focus on his hands (hands just move too fast you are not gonna to trace it) , in fact on his angle, body , and where you want to aim can actually makes you see clearer the attacks if you are good at making their punch off angle ( by several ways ) , BEWARE LOW KICKS because it can really KO you on the street and if you really can't do this , keep your distance and learn some taekwondo fancy kicks ( especially dodge while kicking on the legs ) , you can step in successfully without get hurts as long as he is not twice faster than you

nothing is perfect but a step at 45 degrees away from the kick followed by a twist and punch is used at least against a normal street attack
