Michael, I think your videos are fantastic! You are a fabulous teacher. I noticed someone asked about R&B... while I do a lot of Latin work I also do a lot of R&B, funk, Gospel, pop, and rock. One of The keys to the pop, R&B style is the two open notes on 1 and the and of 1 and a slap or accent on 2 for the first part. There are often a lot of paradiddles and open notes on the upbeats between the drummers grooves. I just thought I would write that since I noticed someone asked about it. I belie

You have become the best teacher on KZbin! I was hire to play the Tumbadora for an R&B and Soul music band... they have a bongo player but don't know how to incorporate the bongos in to this rhythm. Some of the songs of the band sound like Motown music, James Jamerson... to have an idea what I’m talking about check out Marvin Gaye "What's Going On / What's Happening Brother". Hope you can help me. Thanks.

Thanks William! I don't know much about R&B, so all the help is welcome on this subject. In Holland there are some good R&B percussionists and perhaps one day I'll ask their help to make a good lesson about it!

It is difficult to put Congas and Bongos in R&B at the same time, because the main beat is made by drums and bass. The Congas most of the time follow this beat in a bit more free way. But that is also what the bongo wants to do.... Have you looked for this band, The Incredible Bongo Band? They have some rhythms for bongos, and I'll try to help you.

Thanks! Well, I'm not that good in R&B so I have to look into this....

Hello Michael! First of all I Thank you for the awesome videos. I wanted to know if you could make a video giving an "inventory" of the rythms or genres you have in the bongos and the order you have to study them. Like for example, if I'm not wrong, with the congas, you learn the marcha, then you have bomba, guaguanco, plena, etc. Is there a certain order that is better to follow when learning the different rythms? Thank you so much again for the knowledge shared!
@MichaeldeMiranda9 жыл бұрын
+Jeanlouis Colonne Thank you Jeanlouis, With bongo it is different. First you learn the martillo, which is the main rhythm is salsa styles. Bongo has a different role then conga, so on bongo you will learn how to talk or make variations in styles like son, bolero and son montuno ect. This all happens from the same martillo rhythm. Good luck!

Thanks Michael for the videos as always very good. But this one I have a question... for example on 3-2 clave... bongo on the 4 beat plays the hembra then the up beat plays the macho going in to the second measure of the 2 clave, the bongo plays the macho on the up beat after the second beat of the clave then plays the hembra on the fourth beat... as shown on video by Carlo Caro. Can you please verify with Wigbert Martina. Thank you Michael.
@MichaeldeMiranda10 жыл бұрын
I will ask Wigbert. He is visiting me on monday. I hope he knows the video of Carlo Caro.
@Knicksche10 жыл бұрын
Knicksche thanks Michael. Yes the thing is that when you play the tumbao on conga for example 3-2 clave, on the fourth beat you play the conga one beat, and on second measure of the 2 clave you play "four and" two beats. So when the conga play one beat on the 3 clave bar the bongo respond with the macho on the up beat.
@GryptpypeThynne9 жыл бұрын
Knicksche With the conga marcha, you CAN if you want to mark the clave, but you don't have to.
@Knicksche8 жыл бұрын
+GryptpypeThynne correct. But on the bongo it replies on the macho with the upbeat after the 4 count. Conga and bongo plays "four" and bongo replies "and" with the macho.
@GryptpypeThynne8 жыл бұрын
+Knicksche that's true in Son Montuno, but not in Son or Guaracha
