At the time, people were saying Mel Brooks was starting to run out of steam, saying that while it was hilarious, it was not as good as his previous movies. But the bigger problem is that this was a Star Wars parody...in 1987! It was way too late to make one, ten years after the original and four years after Return of the Jedi. Had it come out in the early 80s, it likely would have been far better received.

@@thematt523 I think Mel Brooks was waiting for the next Star Wars movie to come out (which could have been expected in 1986, based on the 3 year gap between the previous 3 movies). When that didn't happen, he just thought: "F*** it, I'll make a parody of it anyway." In the long run, it was the right decision. Star Wars has only grown in popularity over the years, and Spaceballs has certainly become quite profitable by now.

I think one of the things that makes this particular parody so timeless and endearing, aside from the clever witty writing and send-up of a classic film series, is the awesome visual effects. So many parody flicks look so obviously cheap, but this one has some rather impressive effects shots.
