At the time, people were saying Mel Brooks was starting to run out of steam, saying that while it was hilarious, it was not as good as his previous movies. But the bigger problem is that this was a Star Wars parody...in 1987! It was way too late to make one, ten years after the original and four years after Return of the Jedi. Had it come out in the early 80s, it likely would have been far better received.

When that didn't happen, he just thought: "F*** it, I'll make a parody of it anyway." In the long run, it was the right decision. Star Wars has only grown in popularity over the years, and Spaceballs has certainly become quite profitable by now.

I think one of the things that makes this particular parody so timeless and endearing, aside from the clever witty writing and send-up of a classic film series, is the awesome visual effects. So many parody flicks look so obviously cheap, but this one has some rather impressive effects shots. It’s also hilarious to think about, because if they didn’t have the circus, the zoo and mall on their ship, there would’ve been plenty of escape pods for Skroob, Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz to make their escape. But unfortunately that’s what happens when your ship is designed by a**holes. 😂
