I grew up in Germany (born 1955 and left there in 1964), and found out in 2011 (in prep for a Lecture series on Bonhoeffer) that I was related to Bonhoeffer... enjoyed your talk...

Thankyou. I'm currently reading the Cost of Discipleship, which is a real inspiration and eye-opener. Your commentary is not only interesting but also very helpful. I look forward to following the other Parts. God bless you.

Terrific. I have long seen Bonhoeffer as among the greatest saint/scholar/martyrs, and your exposition of his last writings is timely as religion collapses and Christ followers are confronted with the need to build anew. Thanks. On to your next video!

@2:06 You say "he was in prison for a year and a half after being caught in a plot". But, he went to prison April 5 1943, the Abwher files (evidence that linked him to the plot) were found by the Gestapo on September 22 1944.

The three tier aspect compare to one tier makes sense. We do need God in the here and now.

I would appreciate it if you would explain your critique of Mataxis when you say “ he’s making Bonhoeffer Into something he isn’t. That’s a mighty broad statement to drop and leave.

Mataxas is generally appropriating Bonhoeffer in an American context as an appeal towards general theocratic governance, ie Christian nationalism, ie political Christianity that's "heavy on religion and light on Christ," as he's describing. Bonhoeffer, by contrast, was literally martyred in opposition to the state, but more specifically, theologically and politically, was in opposition to the Christian sell outs that supported Nazism and its mandates. The Nazis, by and large, were Christian. Christians today need to be mindful of that as it relates to their politics and their preferences in how they think the state and society should be governed, and how their faith relates and interfaces with that, particularly with nationalism and appeals to changing the legal structures to their contemporary religious standards. Appropriating Bonhoeffer in such a manner very quickly leads into the potential rabbit hole of repeating history, where Jews, gays, political, and theological undesirables are persecuted all over again via the apparatus of state. The Nazis were Nazis well before they committed the holocaust. If the Holocaust was the cherry on top or icing, there's a whole cake of Nazism to explore and understand as to why that political ideology should've been repulsive to all christians... and the tragedy they it wasn't. And all that directly relates to religious affiliation and perceptions of nationalism, and as it relates to religion governing the state, or the state governing the religion. Secular society doesn't want to infringe on religious rights, it just wants to be free from religious mandates enforced by the state on the non religious rights to be non religious. There is a right to be non religious and non conservatively religious or politically conservative. Jews, gays, and non religious people exist, and they have a right to constitutionally - a hard theocratic inclined state would throw this into question, politically and legally, and to those that preach and pronounce this, they're very overt about this, and so is Mataxas. He's an extremist they assumes the secular state is the Nazi state and it's coming from Christians like him, vis a vis Bonhoeffer. A fever dream. The likes of Mataxas would likely gladly crucify gays, for example, in a hypothetical conservative Christian ascension to a theocratic state. It didn't go so well in the inquisitions.

You must take this guys videos with a grain of salt. He's pretty far left on the political spectrum and it colors his reading of the great Bonhoeffer. For years he had a Pride Flag and a BLM flag outside his church. Now he removed the BLM flag but is still flaunting the pride flag.

Mr. Lars uses a very broad brush to criticize Christians whom he thinks are lazy thinkers some of whom in fact are not . It’s very possible to be an open minded Christian who accepts climate change yet rejects evolutionary theory. It’s also possible to be a Christian who uses scientific evidence to evaluate whether the earth is young or old, and to not accept the commonly accepted scientific position and to not be a lazy thinker. . Its possible to do all of this while at the same time accepting mask mandates amd attending church online when the government deems it unsafe to meet in person out of concern and compassion For others. . It’s not all or nothing. You’re not either a lame brained conservative or a brilliantly complex liberal. There is room for nuance. Also the God of the gaps attack is so 2015. Read Stephen Meyer or listen to dr James Tour dismantle the god of the gaps criticism. Atheists can’t use that against Christian apologists anymore.

Nuanced and still wrong. Fascinating. Cognitive bias is one of the most powerful psychological forces. Good luck with that.

Those you are defending painted themselves with that broad brush btw. That's no one's fault but their own.
@subcitizen201210 ай бұрын
Scientific claims (and evidence and proof), are't religious claims. Those so inclined to use religion for that instead, afford science no such wiggle room. If you're scientifically literate to wear a mask to prevent a viral disease from spreading, but deny the evolutionary underpinnings that would otherwise give you that understanding, you are lost both religiously and scientifically. Such nuance won't save you or Christianity, it only serves to destroy both, and to preserve your pride in your ignorance.

Lars is a Big Liberal. He flaunts a Pride flag outside his church (he had a BLM flag but recently took it down, at least he sees corruption). But this leftist viewpoint colors his reading of the great Bonhoeffer and he can't be trusted. His videos express his views but have very little to do with Bonhoeffer's views.

Appreciate that Bon'ffer chose to be following up search after Christ rather a far cry from the Pacifist path Bishop Bell of UK suggested to him with Gandhi & CF Andrews, and became that a purest lamb set for sacrifice... Remember it's a long way off Emperor Constantine's overall Stewardship of Religions till its Secularism of State's lest bias against one another's beliefs?! Astonished to read writings by Lactantius as Christian advisor to Byzantine Reign at Const'ple.
