Bonner Bridge Replacement Project Visualization Fly-Through

Watch this video to see a fly-through visualization of what the new Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet from Bodie Island to Hatteras Island will look like once construction is complete. The image rendering and video were created by HDR, the lead design firm working with PCL Civil Constructors Inc. for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). This is a 2.8-mile, $215 million replacement of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge in the North Carolina Outer Banks barrier island system in Dare County.

Isn't this inlet naturally silting completely over and a new inlet breaking through South of this point? They constantly dredge this inlet to keep it navigable, if they just let the inlet close, naturally, there would be no need to even have a bridge. This process could take a decade, or could happen next week with a powerful storm creating a new inlet and closing this one. They spend resources to maintain the inlet to support the Oregon Inlet Marina and Coast Guard Station. Is there another reason why this inlet should not be allowed to naturally close up?
