The brand-new Rodanthe Bridge on Hatteras Island officially opened to vehicular traffic on Thursday, July 28, 2022.
The 2.4-mile bridge-which extends over the Pamlico Sound from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to the northern end of Rodanthe-allows motorists to bypass the S-Curves, an area of N.C. Highway 12 in northern Rodanthe that is prone to significant ocean overwash and flooding.
On Saturday, April 9, 2022, the North Carolina Department of Transportation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community day to celebrate the completion of the Rodanthe Bridge, which had been under construction since early 2018.
