Steinman wrote this song in 1983 as part of his score for the musical Dance of the Vampires. The show remained unproduced for years, until it was finally staged in 1997 in Austria and later Germany (in German). It was a solid cult hit in Germany (where I saw it). The story was based on the Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers. When it was finally put on Broadway in 2003, starring Michael "Phantom of the Opera" Crawford it was a huge bomb and closed as the butt of many jokes after 56 performances."Total Eclipse of the Heart" remains one of the quintessential power ballads of the eighties

Over the years, she has often said that she was very embarrassed by the video. The director told her that she was to play a school head mistress (principal) obsessing about her students. She's actually a very shy person and didn't want to object so she did what she was told by the record company.

I never watched music videos when the songs came out. I didn’t have MTV or HBO or any of the premium channels so I’ve only recently seen the music videos. I have to say, this one is very strange! I still love the song, but the visuals just kind of throw me for a loop. I think I was happier before I saw those videos, lol. Holding Out for a Hero is my favorite song of hers. It was used as the theme song for a TV show with John Eric Hexum as the star. He was an undercover agent of some kind bringing down bad guys. But one day, while there was a delay on set, he put the prop gun to his head and pulled the trigger thinking that blanks wouldn’t hurt him, but he died. I was devastated, even at 24 yo. 😢

The video is fully explained in the "Literal Video Version"... but, yes, some of the lyrics hit hard after you've reached a certain age and life circumstance. We used to make fun of it in our youth, but now... ouch. One of the great pop vocal performances of the '80s.

Kim Carnes song and music video "Bette Davis eyes" also has a similar "husky raspy voice" like Bonnie Tyler's. Though many are saying this song "Total eclipse of the heart" is about vampires, I always thought it was about her falling in love "with one of her teenage students"., something that nowadays would be "dangerous" to "suggest". I guess it is all "open to interpretation"..

Like Rod Stewart - Bonnie has very little range to her voice but the permanent rasp and power of her expression is pleasing on the right song. She has a character voice rather than being a great singer. The drama comes built in with this song. Celine Dion sang the best Steinman opus - because Celine can sing her face off. It's All Coming Back to Me Now.

80's music videos are horrendous now for reactions. They were more like theatrical interpretations of the lyrics and often confusing and distracting to watch and listen at the same time. And through all that you forget about the depth of the instruments. Tough enough to catch just the lyrics and the music together, and then watch a video at the same time and comment on all 3. Am I right?
@masters131312 сағат бұрын
Saeed, Yes "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is awesome song itself along with the arrangement but I did find the video distracting & overall not a good fit/imagery. Thank You Saeed!! btw, that was a good 'turn around' joke statement!
