I've really enjoyed watching your videos. I've learned so much. I also like the use of electrical tape to give us the views a visual idea of how you what your bonsai to grow. ☺️

I love tamarind. Not only they corky bark as they get old, but for they bright yellow flowers!. I have one tamarind, I m planing to make an air layer on the root base to fix the ugly nebari.
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Rafael Rodriguez Even the younger ones (from seeds) have corky bark, that's what I love from tamarinds too. What I did with mine is to ground layer (similar principle with air layering). Wish you luck and enjoy bonsai.

Hi There, What would happen if you debark just a portion of the trunk and cover with soil? Will this cause a root to grow only in that area?
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
+Star_phyre Yes, same with 'air layering' principle.
@zakcerz8 жыл бұрын
+Bonsai Iligan does this method kill the tree below the new roots? I have an 8 year old kei apple tree about 40cms high. I want to shorten the trunk using this method but also keep the old root and keep growing it into another tree. is this possible?
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
Yes. the bottom root portion can still survive while the air layered top portion can also survive. however, remember that the bottom root portion has to have a branch with foliages which will feed the bottom root system while the top air layer is removed. so it is crucial to select where to air layer.
@rizalouperlas94649 жыл бұрын
sir jojo, what will you do next if new roots grow around the ring bark? will you cut all the roots below it? if not, what's the purpose of the ring bark beneath? tnx
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Rizalou Perlas Yes I will cut, so I will have eliminated the original root which was coiling typical of young tamarind trees. The new bonsai will have a shorter trunk and a better nebari then.

@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
+thom santy Elmer's glue because it is readily available, you can use shoe polish and paint even. But there are commercial products which have anti fungal ingredients.

dear sir, i am from dhaka, bangladesh. here tramarind trees are available in field. but i cant shift them in pot. every times they dye. i took very caution for small roots, but no one survibe. whats my fault ?
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
+Shah Alam They are just very sensitive to disturbance basically same here with very low success rate when collected. The technique is not to collect them at once. First dig around the tree and cut lateral roots one at a time say every month to allow growth of finer roots nearer to the base. Then maybe after a year of gradual cutting new finer roots may have grown well its time to dig and cut the tap root. Transfer in coarse substrate, tie or anchor in the pot, put in shade for about 3 months before easing to the sun. Decrease top growth to minimize moisture demand. Do not fertilize, growth hormone is okay. keep soil moist but not soggy, you need good draining pot. I water mine at least 2x a day if not put a tray of water underneath the pot and water the feet of the pot touching the water level not the soil.

Did you remove the plant from the pot when you put it in the ground
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Fred Grech I did not transfer it yet to the ground Fred, what I did is to install a guard on top of the walls of the pot so I can add more soil (soil extension) and bury the ring barked portion (ground layering). But had I put it in the ground I won't need to remove it from the pot in order not to disturb the original roots and ensure the ringed bark portion is submerged in soil but you can remove it if it doesn't disturb your existing root. Also it would be better if you place something like plastic to separate the ground layer roots from the original roots which will be cut eventually.
@gmanskylazaro16779 жыл бұрын
Sir.., I want to make coconut bonsai...can you tell me how to make?
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
+Gmansky Lazaro It takes long. first you plant in a large enough pot, best if you dont dehusk and never without the nut. The nut should be half buried only. After 2 to 3 years the nut can be separated and let the roots fill up the pot completely. after 3 to 5 years you can start reducing roots and about 30 percent at a time and transfer to a shallower but wider pot. That is my only experience. I plan to root reduce every two years. I fertilzied with slow release. I tried force froning but I did not see significant benefits so now I just leave them as is. Water only at the base not the leaves, they are very prone to fungal infection.
@alexandergunshooter9646 жыл бұрын
You could graft the cut part to some other tree structures.
@KRACKZENNY9 жыл бұрын
Do you ever bother trying to use the big branches that you cut off to make new trees?
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
ZAPKENNY I tried but unfortunately they died eventually, Tamarinds are difficult to root and they have sensitive roots.

Willow-water? What do you mean @Enty Ropy? Is it water that has willows growing in it?
@entyropy32627 жыл бұрын
deepgreenpermaculture.com/diy-instructions/home-made-plant-rooting-hormone-willow-water/ well did u ever use a search engine ? I found this useful link in 5 sec. Btw. it also contains not yet properly understood substances, that prevent bacteria to dmg plants that are in willow water. It has several positive effects. Not sure if all Willows can be used for it, but there are some european Willows that are being used to root cut off branches.

I have a 3 ft. Rainbow Eucalyptus can I make a bonsai with this? Thank you.
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Arlene Steuber Sorry I don't have experience with bonsaing a Eucalyptus, but I guess they can be done as they have quite hard wood and grow fast. If that eucalyptus was mine I would go ahead and try it. Maybe first put it in a larger pot to see how it will respond to containerize gardening (not all plants respond well thus not suitable for bonsai). Then gradually decrease pot size overtime, change every after root work (also do not drastically remove roots, 10 to 20 % at a time). They grow straight up so just limit to a formal upright design. If you'd be successful and the trunk colors to rainbow you will have a magnificent bonsai tree.

Gajanan Chavhan It is thriving well Gaj. But my next update will be on my next work yet on this Tamarind. for now I am freely growing this so that it will root well on the ringed bark portion. Bonsai Iligan Darling, as you ground layer it do an experiment. Make some vertical slits on the trunk and put hormone. Put a deep collar and try to create roots off the trunk>>>like a fig. Maybe can work to create taper on the trunk
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Okay Neli I will try this experiment. Can you clarify the method?. I am not quite clear about it. This is my understanding; After I ring bark at the bottom most of the trunk I will need to make vertical slits at the upper part of the ringed bark, maybe 6 to 8 slits about 2 to 3 inches long, then maybe place something to separate the bark from the wood. Is that it?

i want to start tamarind bonsai from seed , please guide me master
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
+Saim Ali Tamarinds are very pliable, but are notorious for reverse taper, very apically dominant and can grow very straight up. What to do is to wire them early when they are yet saplings say a year old to create an S trunk. Then prune the top mostly, watch the branches growing and control the ones that are growing too thick by pruning so no branch is dominating the growth. Distribute the energy evenly while growing.

I would like to show your demonstration on my website. www.BonsaiMary.com Do you have a picture of the next step? Covering the area of removed bark? Looking forward to the results. amarinds were always one of my favorites.

Mary Miller Yes you can. But I did not take pictures while I was doing my work. I usually post my pics in my facebook though but usually before then after work and no in betweens. I arrange my album on a per tree basis where I can just add update pics in that same album. I just lately realized I need to stop working along the way just to take pictures. I have made other videos in Tamarind which I will be posting soon.
