For the longest time I have been meaning to mention to you, how great your home made concrete bonsai pots are. Well done sir, you are a credit to the art and to the Canadian bonsai industry.

Thanks for taking us on the garden tour - enjoyed it ! Mentioned you are using soil high in organics. Thinking about trying that on my coniferes to get them more happy. Considering my climate here is similar to yours - would you recommend ?

I would for sure. If you are using little organic material your watering has to be on point. For me the tree would get fried in the summer, I’m not able to water twice a day and root would get even hotter than they already do. With bark it will also dry out fast. When I think of non-organic my sense is that it’s hard for the roots to grow (thus ramification) but it come with slow growing. Of course there is the idea of getting fine roots growth for conifers. I also use peat which bring my P.H down as my water has a high PH and I think considers like a little lower PH. My current mix is around 55% peat, 42% perlite, 13 % worm castings, I’m guessing as I don’t measure. . Then I use organic fertilizer on top (bone/blood). I use fish fertilizer in water and then once a year a 20-20-20 Chemical fertilizer. After saying all this I’m just at the point where I’m struggling to get ramification, thinking about ways to slow the trees down. Currently I’m think smaller pots and possibly adding another inorganic to the mix (ideally pumice) I’ve been experimenting with cat litter but don’t like it much (diotomasious earth - spelling wrong). But I might be trying it some more. This transplanting season.
