Dave's Bonsai

Жыл бұрын

This was such a needed trip up to the cabin. My son Toby and I had blast using his new drone for some cool arial shots. Found some very cool trees and enjoyed many other aspects of the cabin. Grab a cup of tea and watch the beauty of some "Up North Bonsai."

What a superb video this Dave. That bass was a real beauty, but your little pike took me back to fishing on the local canal as a lad in the winter. Great stuff.

Daggum, that was pretty cool, brother. The drone footage was amazing, but the fishing….oh-ho-ho! Looks like you and Toby had a blast, man. And that’s the best part.

Look like Jack Pines, they grow well in sandy soil and have shorter needles than the Scotch Pines. I have a dozen started from seed in my back yard

That looks like a great break Dave and made better by some tree and moss collection. Thanks for sharing, Xav

That pine might be a Jack pine. They have short two needle clusters. Biggest indicator would be the cones, they tend to curl slightly around the branch. They're native to Northern mn, but it'll be more difficult to identify if the logging company chose a non native tree to plant.

Boy that drone footage really shows the scene, what a great piece of property you've got there, collection headquarters! Good luck with the quaking Aspens, they are neat mature bonsai for sure and you don't see them all that much. Great video, THANKS!

They usually get the trees for reforestation from nurseries out there. Bare root, 4-6 inches tall. Narrow shovel to V the hole, stick in tree, step in soil to seal and do next. I did that when young out by my uncle in U.P. Michigan. We planted 1000 trees in 3 days. One V’s, other sticks and seals. Then we hope for rain. Trees ran about $0.10/tree back in the day. Under 500, about $0.25/tree.

Pinus banksiana the Jack pine. I'd say this pine are Minnesota's best pine candidate for bonsai... if you can get them to grow in a pot (they are finicky and deeply rooted). 'Uncle Fogy' is a dwarf prostrate nursery variety originally collected in Richfield. The best way I've found is to cut around them them at least two years before you want to collect them and leave them in place, redigging each Autumn. Or better yet, find them growing on top of bedrock with roots already forming a mat. Sometimes they get completely eaten by jack rabbits in winter and, lo and behold, rebud from bare wood even if completely stripped.

Their root crown may be a foot or more below the surface in sandy soil and they get a very yellow winter color. These trees aren't usually found with a central leader unless grown closely together. On the upside, they miniaturize easily--even the cones become smaller, and the driftwood is silvery and persistent. The cones open when heated and the seeds germinate easily. I imagine that taking seedling cuttings would give them a better root plain and prevent that deep taproot.

There's a cool jack pine woodland in Backus I recall. And Minnesota hosts the largest, up in Voyageurs with a 95" circumference.

Check out Arbico Organics. They have organic rodent controls. Might help. To bad you didn’t have an owl hanging around by you. They eat voles, etc.

Why mostly old trees are dead or look like dead???
@DavesBonsai
@DavesBonsai Жыл бұрын
It’s an old forest. There might have been some health issue which lead to taking down most and replanting the Jack Pines. Not entirely sure.
