Thank you for posting this! And for being gracious in your replies to others. Not only did the video bring me a lot of insight, but the comments -like the person explaining how someone's "Bad!" can really mean "good"- were all good. It is so good to remember we have the ability to ( just like the bonsai'd trees, which are under stress and being twisted with wires) turn any "bad" thing into its opposite, if we can just change our perspective.

Hello Sir~~~I did learn something~~~I potted a lime tree using a colander as you advised( in order to produce smaller roots/root ramification ~~I allowed the tree to rest in the shade as I did branch selection and pruned off large leaves ~~~it has been about 2 months and now I have smaller leaves and now (here in Florida USA) at this time it is flowering....it had 2 small lime fruit when I started and removed them........the juice was perfect so after hot labor I had limeade~~~My question since it has been 2 months since the repotting process~~~ do you think I should fertilize the tree~~~considering that Florida USA is a subtropical climate that is warmer than usual right now and no guarantee we will have cold weather this year since we are in an El Nino Weather pattern~~~can giving it food be too risky given those circumstances???

Hello my question is for how long do you the training wires ? I bought my lemon this morning and planing to become a bonsai in couple years , so keep updating videos of your lemon and I'll follow you! Cheers JM
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
Juan Martinez You need to remove your wires when it will start biting your branches. So for how long? the answer is it depends how fast your plant grows. You can allow the branches to bite though a little but if the wires are digging to about 1/4 the size of any of your branches, you can start cutting the wires. Sometimes wire bite marks can make the bonsai look older thus others allow the wires to bite. Overtime when the marks heal, the branches could look rugged rather than smooth and that is a feature for bonsai.

hello, thank you bonsai iligan, all of your information is wonderful. would you recommend this step for a 10yr old grafted ficus that has never been a bonsai, its trunk is already very thick. thank you for your time
@BonsaiIligan9 жыл бұрын
erieschl I assume that ficus is in the ground. To harvest that ficus you need to do it gradually. step 1. Chopped the tree to your desired height ratio is 1:6, the 1 is your trunk diameter, the 6 is your height. so if its a 5 inches thick you chopped it at 30 inches. also chop a lateral root nearer to the base of trunk and do it one at a time say every 3 months. The response is that the tree would grow new branches which you can wire/shape. the cut roots will grow new roots nearer to your base. Then maybe a in a year or two you can harvest the tree, cut the tap root and transfer in this colander method. check your climate, should be growing period.

Excellent thank you very much that definitely answers my question. I really appreciate the response, have a great day!

I love it, i wanted to bonsai kalamansi lemon, is it ok to put it indoors even if it is newly potted,, the sun is just in the morning because it is close to the window
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
if it is newly potted it has to be protected from sun to prevent dehydration, better protect it fully meaning no sun, but once it is established it has to be out into the sun. bonsai just like any plant needs sun and air movement which is outside the house. You can get them into the house near a window once in a while..

I think we wrap a wire around the bark not only to give a require shape but also restricts its growth vertically so that the bark and the stems become thicker ..... NOW Question comes that.... how long we should keep it as wired ....when to released the wires.....is the pruning necessary when wired?..........which month is preferred for this (in Asia/ India)??
@v3n0mgaming714 жыл бұрын
Wrapping metal wire around any plant does not benefit it in any way in fact the opposite what do you thinks gonna happen when the stem becomes thicker and it strangles itself to death and cuts off it's own water supply this doesnt even make the stem grow slower either

Wow! Thanks! Could you tell me what gauge wires you used? And when the time comes, will you just trim the roots which are outside the colander?
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
To decide on what gauge of wire to use to need to assess if the gauge can bend the branches permanently say about 1/3 thickness of the branch. You can always put multiple wires up to 3 to hold the branch in its position. You can always be creative say guy wiring the branch or using some rebar or stick to anchor the branch.
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can just trim the roots outside the colander and you put the tree back to grow further. The response when pruning the roots outside the colander is that more roots grow inside the colander thus increasing the density. However the roots will somehow grow again outside the colander say in 2 to 3 years and you can do pruning again you can do a couple of times before it goes to a bonsai pot. You can use multiple colanders also if you are still growing large trunks or branches.

Thank you sir for sharing this information with us. I have a query that do I need to trim the roots when it comes out of the colander? Will it not damage the plant. Where do I put the plant when it is very cold like January. I live in northern India.
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the colander is that you can trim the roots without disturbing the root ball. The effect is that more roots will grow from the inside of the colander so when it is time to pot up in a bonsai pot which is smaller and shallower you will have more roots in your root ball. You need to put shade in your newly trim roots. when new shoots are growing that means your tree has adjusted well and you can remove the shade. When it gets cold you need to put your tree nearer your house assuming your house is heated, when snowing you need to put it inside say your park but best is a green house.

a year or two old. but the thing to watch is how pliable the trunk is still. the older the tree, the more difficult it is to bend it. but if the tree is also too young you might damage the cambium with you wires and even break them even before you can make it into a curvy bonsai.
@nellythree6 жыл бұрын
Sarr Cat hey just saw your comment I too have a few lemon plants, and I have he same question as you. Did you manage to make them into bonsai? Just curious, have you ever tried making a kaffir lime tree into a bonsai? I have two and as an experiment I'd like to try!
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
no i haven't but yes you can always experiment. I guess the way to do it is to plant it in a container say a flower pot. increase the size of the pot as the tree grows until eventually you do the opposite that is to transfer it into smaller and smaller pot doing slight root trimming every time. this is in lieu of planting in ground which could be faster in thickening trunk but difficult to manage. when the time comes to harvest it. usually root shock occurs. this is what you want to prevent that is why planting it in a container is better. better still in a co lander.
@82coccoon6 жыл бұрын
hope u can make a video present video after all this years, so we can see what it looks like today
@papoumkl71188 жыл бұрын
Thank you sire for this wonderful video. But explain to me why you put the tree first in a plastic container and after in a clay bigger one ? Thank you again
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
+Papou Mkl The plastic container has many holes if you notice it. The roots are expected to outgrow the plastic container and escape outside to the bigger pot. I can remove the plastic container once in a while say every two years then I trim the escaping roots. the response is that the roots grows again branching out from the inside, the roots will eventually increase in density inside the plastic container, so you have a dense yet smaller root-ball which will fit more to a smaller bonsai pot in the future. It is practically root management, you call this the Co-lander method.

Joy Espadilla To get the branches to grow in appealing shapes. Bonsai is about rendering an image of an adult tree in the landscape. Small trees will not often grow in ways that look 'natural' naturally, and will need convincing to convincingly present a 'realistic' image. Another technique, good for brittle trees, is clip-and-grow.

Hello , What should be ideal age plant to start developing same to Bonsai? I have 3 Months old Jamun plant , can I Bonsai it? Thank You

+Jitendra Bhatiya I am not familiar with Jamun plant. As a start I recommend ficuses because it is fast growing and forgiving. But you must know that if you go into bonsai it can be a lifestyle that can change your routine because you have to attend to it unlike plants in the ground, you have to water, fertilize and trim regularly. If that fits you then that is the time you can invest on better materials. Materials that have natural small leaves or can reduce its leaf size, hard wood to last long.

Do not over water, will cause fungus. Colder climate will hasten fungus and rot your roots. If it is in shade already no need for plastic covering and just let it air dry. then water when soil gets dry that means twice a day.

is it ok sir if I used only sand from river or will I change it with river stone grits(first layer), river sand(second layer and vermi cast (third layer or at the top)?

hi sir, i love your demo on how to start a bonsai of a lemon tree. can i apply the same principle to my avocado tree? its not grafted, it was grown frm a seed. we dont have a big lot thats why I want to have it planted in a pot.
@BonsaiIligan8 жыл бұрын
yes you can. but trees not grafted takes a long time to fruit if that doesn't matter then yes you can use un grafted species.

Sir attached is my avocado tree. Actually i have 4 seeds planted in a pot but the other 2 is not yet grown. Anyway, of cors id love to enjoy the fruits of this tree but since we dont have space for this big so i planned to have it bonsai... so i can still follow the same principle for that lemon tree? By the way sir, im from cagayan de oro city and bisaya pud ko.😊 _lh3.googleusercontent.com/FQdDcU8etlvTlaSy8b5OqKpS536MOqDZy1Zmeqy8cj6P3rtZwERgIbB0RbCDUj8xf9kppaXxcA_
yes you can miniaturize your avocado tree in a container but not as shallow as in a bonsai pot as the pot could not support fruiting (too small) but you can use a deeper flower pot. but there is more to bonsai than miniaturizing plants such as scale. we want to have tree looking plants in shallow pots, the broad leaves and the avocado plant's tendency to just grow straight up makes it difficult to make them look like small trees. but yes you can use the principle for the lemon tree.

I have an avocado tree that I started from seed about 2 years ago. I soaked the seed in a shallow coffee cup on the windowsill. As it sprouted, I laid it down facing away from the window in the morning. (the top of the tree as low as the container would allow) This encouraged it, while it was still very flexible, to reach up and thus bend itself toward the sun. After 2 or 3 days(and inches), I'd gently wire the two sides of the bend together then flip it over to let it start again on another bend. I managed to train a zig-zag of 4 bends into it before the vertical growth slowed and leaves began sprouting. My wiring was only small loops to crossing the gaps between bends to keep them from straightening, not the traditional wrapping of wire. After I potted the tree it began sprouting vertical branches from the horizontal bends that I've trained to reach out from the center trunk. I've allowed the lowest branch to form a second trunk that reaches out and away from the main one, the others I get a bit more aggressive with. It's become quite pretty and has maintained its size for about a year now, although lately, (perhaps it know's it's nearly spring?) it has been sprouting many more leaves. I'm looking forward to seeing how it will decide to grow. I admit this was beginner's luck. I began experimenting when I noticed the sprout leaning toward the window. But it seems to me a good way when you start from seed, to bend the trunk without stressing the plant. I don't know how it would work with other types of trees, but the beginning growth of avocado is so dramatic when it finally germinates that I'd recommend giving it a shot. The speed of growth made it super fun to play with It had to be at least 6 inches in a week! Not often do we get that instant gratification with plants! Unless it's peas and squash. I'm definitely going to apply this colander trick to train my roots and thicken the trunk.
