In this video clip I worked on a "Wild Lemon" material. (this is an actual work on my material). I thought out loud on my analysis and my options then eventually decided on my corrective action. For beginners you would learn as you follow my thoughts in deciding for this material, since I explained the horticultural principles involved in this situation and the merits of options.

Thanks for your videos, I like your style. I'm from Mexico. Do you left the scar without any healing wood paste? or what do you use when you cut branches like that?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
better with cut paste firstly to prevent moisture loss 2nd prevent infection. i substitute with elmer's glue or any office glue, clay, paint, many others.

I'd remove the branch right above the cascade branch it looks out of place and on inside bend too? You have a nice tree in there !
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
Scottish Bonsai Yes you are right, it is really out of place and on inside bend and I am going to remove that later as you suggested. But for now I am making that as a sacrifice branch to thicken a bit the new trunk and facilitate healing of the very large cut. I have curve that wound round with a power grinder but have not shown that in the video. I always curve round my trunk cuts to facilitate healing and transition to the new diameter and movement. thanks for your idea and comment.
@EMTBonsai
@EMTBonsai 9 жыл бұрын
Yeh I'm doing things like this myself at the moment just be careful of that sacrifice branch it don't start to swell at the heal point! As my elms do this if I leave a branch to heal a wound so I don't bother now I just remove it wait 3 days for wound to dry out abit and use the bees wax sealer around the outside of the Cambium ring n leave the wood exposed In the middle it seems to heal faster with very little sealer! Must just be perfect amount of moisture kept in to heal it I would use my dremel tool to create a dip in the wood too so it stays in taper iv cut
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have to keep watch on that sacrifice branch if left too long can swell the heal point. You have a nice sealing wax there. I intend to buy a cut paste from Japan. I was using an ordinary office glue though. Enjoy your bonsai..

Recently I bought 2 small Ficus Tiger Bark and 1 small Ficus Benghalensis. As per seller, they are now 3 to 5 years old and 8 inches tall. These trees also got nice training. My dream is to grow these 3 to 4 feet tall bonsais. My question, should I let these tinny bonsai grow up to 3 feet tall first and then start pruning or I do all the regular maintenance (pruning) from the beginning and eventually tree will grow up to 3 feet ?
@stevenschnepp4816
@stevenschnepp4816 6 жыл бұрын
ewasahm Let them grow. Only prune out branches you know you don't need. If you start pruning them as if they were bonsai now, they'll never get thicker.

What's your front then? I'd go with using the scar as the back as the thinner taper is more bowing towards you with the cascading branch on the right of the tree?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
Scottish Bonsai You are right again, the scar at the back and the cascading on the right and I can wire the cascading branch towards me the viewer as if to embrace the viewer. thanks again for that idea. this time I did not think of this alternative, you are good.

Can you have an video that show how to plant new cutting how to care for it to make it into another bonsai?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
I will note that, though that is a simple topic I will try to write it here. first your cuttings must be fresh. then dip it in soil though river sand is best for better aeration. ensure you have good drainage hole with screens to prevent erosion out from your container. If your cuttings are large anchor your cuttings to your pot with wires or ropes. Water frequently and keep in FULL shade ( not just under a mango tree). Rooting hormones can increase chances of survival. Increased moisture in the air increases survival. A technique is to wrap the tree including the pot with plastic or cellophane to trap the moisture. Wind draft is dehydrating. For small cuttings I place them in my bath room. for large ones like collected materials you can wrap in plastic or just water them every 2 hours to keep moisture.

I been told not to prune the roots and the top all at once. I thought this is what caused one of my trees to die after it was re-potted. It was a hinoki cypress. Is this because of what kind of tree it was? Do you ever run into this problem?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
the principle I adhere to is called "Energy Balancing" when you prune the roots there is a chance it cannot support the top as it cannot get enough nutrients and moisture it use to. so I also prune the top to reduce its energy demand. So far this works for me. I have no experience with Hinoki cypress. though the top is what sends growth hormone to the roots to grow, it should not kill the tree. I have seen so many stumps grow back.

VIC BARRIENTOS Are you from the Philippines Vic? Bonsai tools are imported. Japan made is the best (check out "Harbest" an Agricultural Supplier. but there are cheaper brands made in Indonesia and almost as good as Japan. check out Juan LLaga in Facebook, they Juan and Robert Steven sells "Ryuga" tools. There are Chinese made tools though and much cheaper but you have to be an experienced user not to damaged them easily.

Hi, how do you plant the part that you cut-off? do you put rooting hormone on the cut and soak in water? I want to learn bonsai planting and any help will be appreciated :)
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
+Ali S. In my climate, these wild lemon cuttings can grow easily on almost any type of soil even without soaking nor rooting hormone. but soaking overnight with rooting hormone or just simply dipping in powder form rooting hormone increases its rate of success to almost a 100 per cent. That applies to all cuttings that grow.

Hello! How long before you repot it/remove it from the plastic colander?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
It depends when the canopy or the tree becomes more of bonsai look or when I feel like to bonsai it again. The Colander I can always remove then trim the sides (protruding roots). The response is a denser root system nearer the base of the tree. Say 5 to 8 years before that colander fills up with roots.
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
Remove the colander from the large pot say every two to three years and trim the sides of the colander, then put it again back to the large pot to grow roots nearer the base..

Hi Sir, I have grown citrous (calamansi, lemon, dalanghita) in a container (timba) and it's about 6ft tall now. I want to make it into bonsai. I want to do what you taught of cutting the body and let it grow to have some leader. Is it possible for a citrous? And if possible can i repot it to a small container meaning i'll cut it's lower roots to fit the smaller container. Pls advise Sir. I think my citrous are about 3 or 4 years old. I'm starting to love Bonsai making. :)

Nice tutorial. What wire do you use?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
+Mumu Chan I use aluminum bonsai wires. Here in my country the Philippines we use mostly aluminum wires, there are two colors the silver and the copper coated wires. The copper wires (not just the coated ones) are stronger and more expensive, they are popular for junipers since you need stronger and smaller wires to bend the branches crazy, where they get the branches usually from the top of the tree. It is different with deciduous or tropical trees here..

Today when I woke up I was thinking about snow and how I might not have school so I started wondering if I would have school and in all honesty I was kind of exited that I might not have school so I made myself some cereal and sat down at the kitchen table. But when I sat down down my chair squeaked and at first I just ignored it and kept on eating my cereal but after a while I got pretty aggravated so I went to my garage to get some wd 40 and sprayed my chair, pretty satisfied with myself I sat back down and get eating my cereal which with the the first bite I realized had got soggy, but I still ate it knowing it was wasteful not to, but it wasn't very good after that I went to school and had I pretty boring day first I went to 1st period then I went to 2nd period then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th, then 6th, then 7th, and then I took the bus home so I you can see It was a very boring day.

Amit Jadhav You can get many cuttings (same specie) of one banyan tree. let them root individually. then harvest the successful ones and tie them together with garden rope or anything tightly so they fuse. plant in big container until they fuse as if they are one. A better alternative is you air layer branches and tie them together to fuse.

Kind of amateurish. I felt sorry for the poor tree. I would not recommend this video to any one starting out in bonsai.

Curtis Lee I would appreciate if you can suggest better options and explain so we all learn, no need to worry if others will disagree or agree on your ideas, the important thing is to share knowledge. Happy bonsai.

+Curtis Lee let us see some of your work...criticism is easy to give...proof of knowledge is not...this man knows his stuff and I always look forward to his videos...give us the opportunity to critique your work...

If you cannot see what he is doing wrong then I suggest sites like Graham potter or Nigel Saunders so that you can pick up some tips yourself. You might learn something as well. Then you will understand the difference between butchering a tree and styling,

+Curtis Lee Let's not be cryptic. Please just simply state what is wrong? Do know that Westerners you mention are likely to follow Japanese methods. But other Asian countries have different methods of bonsai and may have different points of aesthetics you probably may not understand.

True. However, the Japanese have spent hundreds of years refining their techniques and would cringe at some of your methods. Do it right or don't do it at all.
