Eric works on one of his favorite trees, a shohin size Juniper with a distinctly mountain style. He's shared this tree before on the channel (Funky Juniper • Bonsaify | Funky Junip... ) and written an article (Too Straight for a Juniper Bonsai? www.bonsaify.c...)
00:00:55 Comparing the tree from Sept 2015 to today (December 2024).
00:02:07 How to bring out nice features in jin and make jin design decisions.
00:03:10 Foliage discussion - removing the "shoulder pads".
00:04:00 Branching & crown arranged, how a mountain feeling is created.
00:04:37 Change in crown position leads to a need to change the angle, thus repotting!
00:05:14 Moving to a new pot from Thomas and Kathy Arakawa (www.bonsaify.com › collections › arakawa-bonsai-containers). Prepping the root ball and screening/wiring to prep container.
00:06:23 Adding shohin-size Aoki mix (Japanese blend 60% akadama).
00:07:21 Explanation of positioning in new pot.
00:08:14 Note re. timing of repotting based on climate!
00:08:55 Eric spins the tree around to share the results and discusses why he likes the new pot.
What do you think of the repot and the style of this tree? Does it give you that high on a mountain feeling? Let us know in the comments below. Please give this video a like and subscribe to our channel!

This tree is really cool. I’ve always liked how much you’ve been able to age the tree, for how small and or young it actually is. The way the branches are wired, kind of reminds me of a weeping willow though. Idk how I feel about that. Either way, it’s still a cool little juniper and gives that old juniper in the mountains feeling. Great video as always, Eric.

I remember you showing me this tree at your place when I visited and being absolutely enamored with it. You have lots of nice trees, but this one is very special. Like the new pot, btw.

I'm pretty sure they're Japanese-made ARS SS380 Long Reach Bonsai Scissors. I got some via Amazon for about $17. Work great for trimming small branches. ARS makes good stuff.

Lol. Re: scissors - I actually don't know where they come from. I think Joshua Roth may have made them a while ago but I'm not sure now. Jay (who I have videos with here on the channel) is a funny guy sometimes. He would buy the scissors years ago, use them until they got dull, then stick them in a coffee can in the corner of his shop. A year or so ago he was complaining that he couldn't find them any more...so I took the coffee can full and sharpened about 20 pairs. I gave him back 15 or so and kept the rest for myself to use around the shop. What I've found since is that they are a really good "beater" scissor, particularly for repotting. I use them when I don't want to dull my good scissors. I just did a little searching and they are in fact Joshua Roth #130, but there appear to be other versions out there also: amzn.to/3BJVnWL

@@Bonsaify Thanks for replying Eric...So many don't bother...I was just wonder since I see them in so many videos...I zipped over the A/P and put some in my 'want list'...I'm also looking into starting my Bonsai tool collection...So many decisions, High Carbon or Stainless, 8" or 11" and which brand/maker to start researching...As you know, the dollars amount and quality are vast...This may be why I don't get responses as I am pretty wordy...Thanks again, Love your channel and content...
