Another beautiful transition! And I think I’ve said it before, cheap lousy string rots away in the sun and rain, way before it damages the tree. It’s been my go-to for my garden trees. And birds seem to love it for their nests
@MiltonChang-ee6rq2 ай бұрын
Using string that decays for anchoring is an excellent idea. Thank you so much for sharing!
@jonathanzellner9062 ай бұрын
@@MiltonChang-ee6rq it’s also helpful to me because I tie ALOT of branches in the early spring. The bright color is easy to find to cut it off later, and if I miss some, it doesn’t hurt the trees. I’ll try to email you pictures of the abandoned bird nests where they used the string to be a part of their nests. (Before anyone worries, all of the nests had bird families in them, and I don’t bother the nest until it’s either fallen from the tree or is obviously abandoned)

Hinoki is so good for bonsai! You’ve got a whole heap of cuttings too!

@@MiltonChang-ee6rq they like being kept moist and a semi shady spot, they don't bud back from old wood but other than that their gorgeous! Cuttings root well too, I do mine in fine Akadama/kiryu and keep in a shady spot till they've rooted.

I have worked with trees which would not be stable without being tied into the pot, especially if a loose substrate is being used. Certain species, like ficus, will tolerate instability, but others not so much. I have always viewed not tying as an "if you can get by with it" approach. This is a beautiful hinoki.

I do like that tree. I only use wire when the tree balance prevents it from being stable or if the root system is small and stand up. I’m always picking new bits of information when I watch your videos. Maybe someday you could do a seminar. The area where you live is a beautiful place I’ve been there many times. I would move there but being retired I live good where I am but it a little out of my budget there.

Great tree in a handsome pot! Have you guys set a selling price yet for that pot? How about an introductory sale when they hit the market?
@MiltonChang-ee6rq2 ай бұрын
I am shocked by the shipping cost! We will have a few available by year end.

@@MiltonChang-ee6rq Shipping rates these days are HORRIBLE! Post office ground advantage is gonna be the cheapest method.

Was the older tree grown in the pot or in the grond first? I have some large Hackberry trees in my yard. I may try and do some airlayering in the spring I'm licking up some seeds now.

towards the end of the year. In the mean time, poke a hole in a food aluminum tray to experiment... I did that first!

I hope you can help me. I was offered a large hinoki from a friend. It is about 6 feet high, with a very large trunk. Because of where it had been growing, and the lack of sun, the branches are very long, with no foliage on the first 2/3 of each branch. If I trim back the ends of the branches, will it backbud. Not so sure about a very large hinoki, since I have a few smaller ones that have foliage back towards the trunk.
@MiltonChang-ee6rq2 ай бұрын
To save long branch without green growth, consider grafting...It takes alot of work...but given this is an old tree probably withi interesting trunk...worth ht\\ saving!

I have found with Hinoki, that it does not backbud
@MiltonChang-ee6rq2 ай бұрын
I would think so...must evergreen do not. I found juniper sometimes might...so I would cut the long branches but leave some top growth...it may bud out left in full sun...I thing pine does that sometimes too...Experiment and give us feedback. Thanks! Share knowledge, proven information is what BH trying to do.
