Trigun Stampede is the newest entry in the Trigun ethos, however the new anime has the trigun fanbase split. Is this new trigun anime a worthy piece to complement the entirety of the franchise? Or is it a "too madern CGI nightmare?" let's find out.

I think it's a little of both. In the original, him being goofy was to mask his feelings. Then half way through the series, Knives and the gung ho guns, forced him to face those feelings along with making him realize that he can't save everyone. Most of the original anime was Vash paying to protect everyone (including the criminals) with his own health. No one dies but he gets hurt and demonized in the end. He also refused to face his true feelings as he likely felt that giving into them would make him more like Knives.

I feel like original Trigun Vash was more emotionally mature even if he was a lot goofier. The way he looked and carried himself seemed like he had gotten used to shouldering his burdens and facinf his demons alone. Stampede Vash is younger and acts younger. He has a greater consistent sense of urgency and angsty naivety with him. The humor is there, but he doesn't use it to get through ridiculously dangerous encounters. In the first anime it seemed like he almost always had a plan and knew he would come out on top. His sense of humor made him seem more superhuman and his gunplay made him seem like more of a veteran. I loved Stampede. That's just a big difference I observed.

I hoped for much (+90% true to the original), expected decency (at least 60% true to the original), and was sorely disappointed (got 5% at most, the only similarities are essentially just doing enough to qualify as copywrite infringement if they hadn't paid to use the Trigun intellectual property rights). As a nostalgic fan of the original, it's like going to a bar and hearing they have Remy Martin XO ($225 USD a bottle), knowing they always over-hype their selection and expecting them to only have a top end quality of bottles like Paulet XO ($85 USD), and then when you order the best in the house they come out with and charge you for a drink from a Hennessey VSOP bottle ($52 USD) but you can tell on the first sip that they just filled up an empty bottle with E&J VS ($12 USD) and hoped you wouldn't notice. And while you and the other hardcore Cognac enjoyers scrunch your face at having just paid the price of the entire bottle of what you were actually served under a false name, everyone else drinking it in the bar who's never had this particular type of fine alcohol before and don't realize they're being swindled think that those who know better are just being pompous. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with E&J's VS. It's just not comparable to the others on the list. Especially when you're being served E&J under the name of the Hennessey brand. Same thing with Stampede. This would be a decent anime on it's own, if the writers had made their own space-western show in the same vein. But butchering the Trigun characters/backstory to make this is insulting to those who know better.

Agreed, although I grew up watching the hand drawn beauty of 80s and 90s anime and have a love for it, people are ridiculous trying to say that the CGI animation is at all worse than hand drawn. Both are beautiful in their own way, but for the action scenes, I'm CGI all the way. If you slow down older anime, frame by frame, you can see the corners cut or the imperfections/ blurring. The CGI animation is incredibly fluid, and to not have consistent camera angle changes to hide the imperfections of the animation actually allows the audience to see the entire fight.

Unlike clone wars, Bad Batch, or Mandalorian that stayed true to the original material given. Trigun Stampede is mockery to the original work. I remember the staff stating that one of their influences was the MCU. Which actually makes a lot of sense weirdly. One thing that I don't see a lot of when talking about how the show has been restructured is that the original Trigun manga was in a magazine that had its publication cancelled about two volumes in. Before the content that would become Maximum. The Trigun '98 anime adapted that material through a massive cliffhanger similar to the end of volume 2. So a show that adapts the beginning of the manga as a prequel along the lines of something like Captain America The First Avenger aligns closer with the original manga than most might realize. Especially with Nightow's love of movies, the manga's chock full of movie references that weren't really in Trigun '98 that much. Mike's theory is definitely on the mark. If nothing else, I'm really glad the Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 debate is alive and well. Makes me nostalgic for an older era of anime that was more willing to deviate from the source material.

I have to agree about a reimagined story not being a bad thing in and of itself, especially when it's made clear that this is being done out of love for the source material rather than just disregarding it. I honestly think Stampede is a masterpiece of storytelling. I'm glad you mentioned how the choice to use CGI alows them to do things they couldn't do in 2D animation and it's so true. I've watched all the episodes of the new show a few times and each time I notice some new character detail in the background that they wouldn't even have bothered to do in 2D. For example in the first episode when Vash and gang are in the bar and he's still tied up, When Rosa is talking to Meryl, you see Vash in the foreground making cheesy faces at Rosa's son. Such a masterful and subtle way of showing how childlike and caring of a person Vash is.

I was an adult when the original Trigun aired/I watched it (hell, I'd wager my 'kid' is probably older than most people reading this). Consequently, I'm not burdened by the sense of nostalgia you get from having grown up with a series. Also, there's a lot of the stuff in the OG series that I feel doesn't resonate as well with someone who's only ever watched it as an adult, with a lot of the unnecessary goofiness/silliness and obvious, dragged out filler being a little more hard to swallow. I can't help but wonder how many and to what degree this is affecting people's ability to really objectively judge Trigun Stampede on it's own merits. There's a lot of really good stuff I see reviewers glossing over or outright ignoring about Stampede that, from a purely 'nuts and bolts' storytelling/filmmaking p.o.v., are *far* superior to the OG series. The music (my GOD the music), sound design, choreography, pacing, and cinematography being the most obvious. What's worse is hearing people gloss over these things to critique something as wholly inconsequential as how his gun looks different. It's a shame really as I feel a *really* good show is being unfairly criticized and consequently ignored.

Hey man, thanks for putting this video together. It really helped contextualize my own feelings about Stampede and my relationship to the previous anime (which I loved), the original manga (which I own), and Trigun Maximum (which I only collected the first seven volumes that were released in North America). It's funny, I was picking up the manga in college and I remember going to the comic book store with my best friend to pick up volumes of Maximum as they were released as he, ironically, was picking up the new issues of The Ultimates. Your comparison between Stampede and the previous Trigun works/adaptations to Marvel's Ultimate universe made me tweak my critical perception of the new anime. I wasn't a fan of the first few episodes for a lot of the same "this character doesn't feel like the character I enjoyed watching in the past" reasons that you covered. But there was something there. I was still compelled to watch each week. And it wasn't a hate watch; I wasn't finishing each episode and then going online to shit on it. Something felt very sincere about the new adaptation, even as it took several steps that I saw as misfires. I think I'm more interested to see where Stampede goes after watching this video and I'm more confident in my own feelings regarding what I like, what I don't like, and the fine line between apprehension and anticipation. So, all that to say: thanks dude! Thanks for forming the words that my own brain couldn't quite get right.

It was obvious af, July wasn't destroyed, there is no Milly, Vash is different, new unseen characters, pacifism vibe is not pushed to the absurd, gun is different, everything is different and instant conflict with Knives in episode 3. All of that would imply it's a prologue. It wasn't so hard really. I am just glad i wasn't the only one who gave a show it's chance believing it's a prologue to original story to build up on it, to fix on many mistakes of original because it was lacking of composition and world building. Now this is indeed a Trigun i expected it to be. And i expect it to be much better than original. I just hope that this risk with prologue won't make it harder to sell it.

For years Trigun has been amongst my favorite anime of all time, basically sharing 3rd place with Cowboy Bebop in my top 3, and though I was kinda skeptical at first, because it wouldn't be what I wanted it to be(obviously people wanted the "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Treatment"), but with each new trailers getting released in 2022 I got more and more excited(it also helped that I already saw Beastars, so I knew I could trust Studio Orange when it comes to creating great anime), and I even finally read the manga last year, and that quickly became my favorite manga I've read so far. And though things are different, I absolutely love Trigun Stampede so far, and out of the ones I am watching it totally is my favorite title of this season. My only skepticism may be that they rush things to much and this all will be a 12-episode, 1-season story. Just because outside of Beastars, Orange never made anime with more than 1 season. But I do hope that there will be more seasons, with season 1 having its climax with the July incident, followed up by a time skip at the beginning of season 2. Btw. since you mention American Comic Books, it should also be noted that Tatsuhiro Nightow himself is a huge fan of western comic books, so this idea of him being open to the idea of retelling stories like this, shouldn't shock anyone. It might be unusual to anime/manga, but it makes perfect sense for a Nightow IP to get this treatment. He even went so far, as made the Studio Orange crew watch a bunch of Marvel movies before they started working on Trigun Stampede. Yet a bunch of Trigun fanboys got mad at potential Marvel influences, yet for how much they seem to care about the old Trigun, they seemed to have little to no care about the guy who created it.

Welcome back, was just telling someone about your amazing Outlaw Star video recently! I think for me, visually, audio wise..., fluidity of motion... it's amazing! It's hard not to gawk at it because of just how smooth the execution is! I think so far, my friction comes from there not really feeling like a flow to each episodes story, it keeps feeling like it doesn't really hit a stride, or that it locks into the story the actual episode is trying to tell. Not sure about how that compares to the original series, but here I just keep feeling like it's interrupting itself mid sentence? If that makes sense... I'm absolutely bowled over on the quality as it relates to literally everything else about it, I just can't seem to find the flow state of the story. Things just kind of happen, and then don't, and then switch tracks, or things are glossed over that felt like they needed some more love. When Wolfwood joins them, it's never stated he is, or at least not clearly, and he just suddenly knows about their problems and it's unclear when and how that deal went down for instance, just felt like there should be some narrative around that to seal the gap. Might just be a byproduct of trying to fit things into a limited number of episodes? I hope it catches it's stride because it's so stylish and beautiful! Crossing my fingers it takes off and we get to see how this plays out and evolves over time.

I feel like the main draw of OG Trigun was how we got to know Vash. Instead of being told his whole story right away, it was doled out little by little over the course of the series, forcing us to tune in to get all the puzzle pieces. Here, it's pretty much one giant exposition drop in the first episode. We're not engaged as much with the character, so we don't get as invested. That said, getting rid of all the exposition makes way for all the action - and the action in Stampede absolutely kicks all the ass. I've enjoyed the series so far, and look forward to seeing where they go here.

I was really hesitant about watching this at first when I saw the differences. That hesitance lasted about 5min before I just decided that I really couldn’t pass up a FMA: Brotherhood kind of re-imagination of Trigun (which is what I figured Stampede was going to be) with some modern twists. Fell in love right out the gate and oh boy do I have a-lot to say to people who won’t even give this show a chance. The characters aren’t exactly what I remembered from the original anime but they are still really well written. Yeah Vash is a bit more subdued, Meryl is more naive and Wolfwood is way more grim but it makes sense. Vash is still an excellent marksman and absolute doofus and I love him. Unshakable values and will power beyond all else which were the core parts of his character. I wasn’t as shocked by the martial arts but I think that’s mostly because I always just assumed og Vash could physically fuck shit up anyway. And I’m just going to say it, I’m glad he’s less flirty. Meryl is cute and naive but is set in her beliefs and has an internal toughness I can’t wait to see more of, especially as a foil to a newbie (spoilers) Millie with all of her innocence. We will get to see Meryl taking care of and helping Millie out with the understanding that she’s doing for Millie what Roberto did for her. And Wolfwood, oh gosh Wolfwood. He’s the most different from the og anime but I honestly don’t mind. Sure he could be a bit more playful with Vash but he is way more of a product of his history then og Wolfwood ever was since the og anime didn’t go as deep into his manga backstory as Stampede already has. I like that he’s more aggressive and more willing to push Vash but still has his own moral compass and is so similar yet so different to Vash. He is brash and hot headed and while I would like him to be a bit kinder, well that’s what character arcs are for. Either way he’s still super fun to watch. It matches better with Stampedes more dark undertones. The story is different only in that it actually focuses on the main plot right from the beginning and does a good job of cutting out fluff. Fleshing out the main plot and providing more details then I think we ever got in either the og anime or first manga. The reduced amount of flash backs is nice too since it helps tell a more complete story and the flashbacks we do get are different. Let’s be honest we weren’t going to get the same shocks from the history of the story cause we already knew all of the og anime plot twists (the manga plot twists are probably safe tho). And if the shock value wasn’t going to be there then it made sense to just tell a more complete story instead. I like it. I like the focus being on Vash and Knives and the plants right from the get go. And I think the other writing style that I really enjoy about Stampede is how they show secrets. Everything is upfront with the audience, the writers are more so trying to focus on how secrets and dramatic reveals effect the characters instead. We know Vash is a plant from episode 1, the others don’t find out till way later and we get to watch as they slowly piece together that he isn’t human and come to terms with it. And the twist with Wolfwood being an agent of Knives, we get to see almost immediately but Meryl doesn’t find out till that last episode when they have their confrontation. The change in focus is nice and the storytelling is pretty fluid. Pacing sometimes seemed a tiny bit off but I’m honestly so in love with the show I will forgive it. The animation, which I thought was going to effect me more, was so smooth and amazing I can’t believe people don’t like this. 3D anime has gotten better in recent years and I don’t think they could have told a better visual story with 2D animation. Not to mention the 3D fights look absolutely incredible, the motion and flow of the animation look great when paired with the fighting and everything just looks slick. It also matches better with Stampede using way more physical behavior and non verbal social cues then the og anime. You can tell when Wolfwood is annoyed by just his body language without just a close up of him furrowing his eyebrows. Or see Vash going through nearly every stage of grief in a second before he gathers himself, smiles, and moves on. Or when Meryl is just done and you can see her frustration without her needing to say anything. It was a very good choice that I wish more people would give a chance. Something that helped with the transition between animations styles was definitely the voice acting. The voice actors are great and I liked how diverse each of their speech patterns were. The music was well done and this is coming from a girl that liked how rough the og Trigun’s opening song was. I liked how gritty and harsh the og sounds and music were. But I really started to like the music and opening credits more once I was able to read the lyrics. It’s different but a good different and I can understand why they decided to change it up. It’s more subdued, somber and matches better to how much darker Stampede’s story is. I also really liked that they kept Vash’s original voice actor which I’m honestly so happy about. There will only ever be one Vash voice for me and they really knew what they were doing by stick with his og voice actor. It shows they are just as much fans of the og anime and manga themselves. The only thing I didn’t like to much at the beginning was a) Millie isn’t there and b) how young they looked which I thought came from anime’s always wanting to focus on high school age kids. And it’s funny that the two things I was even able to say I didn’t completely like turned out to actually have reasons behind them. We eventually get clued into the fact that the characters look and act younger because they ARE younger. This was their stories before July and the tiny bits of character development we get to see at the end of season 1 was phenomenal. I can’t wait for season 2 (yay Millie)! Anyway I liked this anime, liked this video, and can’t wait to have more. (Phew rant over)

I've been loving Stampede. The CGI is actually incredible. It's obviously not as suited to a show like this as something like Land of the Lustrous, but it's just absolutely fantastic. Between the little expressions and movements, it just feels like it really is possible to make an anime entirely in CG and not have it just be a way to save production money. And that's not even getting in to the fact that this seeming prequel is going to give us way more context on Vash and friends simply by showing us how they were before July and how they will be after it. Also Roberto's last name is DeNiro and that's funny to me.

Trigun Stampede has brought back my excitement to the franchise. Being a huge fan of the original anime, I was stoked to hear they were making a retelling. I honestly do believe that Stampede does a very great job at portraying the characters even though they are slightly different from the original. Each episode of Stampede has left me on the edge of my seat. They do an amazing job of explaining the story before the episodes take place, so that those who haven't seen the original arent confused. Me being a seasoned Trigun fan, I have to be careful explaining things to my friend who is a newbie in the Trigun fandom, so the story speaks for itself here. I wasn’t sure if when they said “plants” they meant “power plants” or like a literal “ plant” plant. 😅 Kind of right on both ends. I look forward to your Trigun timeline video because I want to know where this Trigun Maximum fits in. 🎉

Thanks for the video. A few days ago, I saw it was on crunchy roll and was curious if it was a remake, a continuation, or what. As someone who saw the original and loved it (Vash is my favorite character design in anime/media), I'm glad you made a video of it. I'm even more intrigued and as to what this new version represents and what it can add to the 90s version and how it can build on Vash character.

Great video as always but also HAPPY 4 YEARS! I've been watching since 2020 and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Bonsai Pop is the best channel on YT. Congrats guys, here's to 4 more 🍻

I honestly love Trigun Stampede, seeing Orange push CG anime once again with some genuinely awesome Keyframe work and pose favoring animation is so refreshing. While I do love the original, it does miss alot of the stuff from the manga due to airing before it was fully completed (I believe?), so seeing Stampede not only reinvent the world of Trigun but also reintroduce alot of lost character, including unseen members of the Gung-Ho Guns is so nice and kinda surreal. Johnny Yong-Bosch has been just doing a victory lap in 2022-23, returning for Ichigo and now Vash, his first voice role nearly 20 years later, is such a treat.

I know from the podcast that you guys have been loving it so I'll be surprised if this video says "no way." My brother and I actually watched the original for the first time recently and it happened to coincidentally line up right before stampede started (I honestly had not planned for it to be that way since I thought it had already aired) so my brother had us watch it and needless to say the both of us have felt very differently... honestly I had gotten a similar sentiment from what I've been seeing online so I am surprised that you guys were so into it (same with your thoughts on Vinland Saga's new season but for opposite reasons), but everything can always be appealing to someone. That's the beauty of different opinions.

I can't say I'm sold on Stampede, but I will continue to watch it, my main gripe with it is that I adore the pacing of the Anime, the "whacky western comedy adventures of Vash and friends" as a first half while teasing some mysteries was great IMO, and obviously, Legato being the embodiment of, second half begins, tonal shift, is a great character introduction/story beat. Additionally I miss the gunplay of the anime. But Knives' introduction in Stampede is amazing, really maked him stand out as a terrifying inhuman foe. It feels like the antagonists are the ones who got the biggest improvements in general. Finally, I have no clue how people can just say: "It's CGI, therefore it's bad" when it's handled by Studio Orange, their work on Land of the Lustrous and Beastars is a masterclass on CGI anime, and Stampede clearly is their best work yet.

oh my gosh, thanks for much for this video. Ive only been in the Trigun fandom since Stampede came out, and I love it and the og anime to bits, both for very different reasons. And it just feels so unfair to Stampede of how many people treat it. Comparing it to the og is one thing, but immediately writing it off because it's not the same is just plain unfair.

Going to watch this tonight but wanted to give some engagement now. Me and my partner have been watching Trigun alongside Stampede, pacing out the episodes but we're hooked very hard on Trigun and about to finish it probably this weekend. Meanwhile were enjoying the Stampede version a lot, and with the knowledge of Trigun in us, we're excited to see how Stampede pieces things together. Love and Peace

Huge fan of the original but the new series is fantastic. I think only Wolfwood hasn’t quite landed for me yet and I think it’s because he’s in it too early and overlaps a lot with Roberto who gets more focus. Roberto though is a very marked man and I’d put down a solid wager that Vash is going to carry the responsibility for his death in July for a long long time.

Thank you for the video, now I know why there's a layer of "Hmmm?" every time I watch Stampede. The feeling of "Incompleteness" that hangs on the air every time I tune in on Stampede has now been given concrete form. Guess letting it sit till the first season conclude will be the best option for my enjoyment. Thank you

As a relatively new fan of OG Trigun (watched it last year for the first time) Episode 3 really showed me that they were on to something potentially special here. The hyperviolence and the sudden brutal turn to tragedy is something I didn't see coming so early, and it makes me think that those tragic sad moments that I already loved in the first anime are gonna hit even harder than before. The idea that this is all building towards the July incident has me super excited to see how things will play out

Now that season 1 is over, yes, it is a prequel and season 2 will go into the manga more closely. Studio Orange have said the characters are meant to look young for season 1.

I’m someone who has never watched the OG Trigun and I absolutely loved stampede, the story is great, I cried so hard when Roberto died since he was my favourite character. The Cgi was great too, definitely gonna watch season 2 if it comes out.
