David Easterbrook visits the vibrant Dan Robinson for a generous tour of his sanctuary Elandan Gardens located in Washington state. The 84 year-old war veteran is a pillar of the American bonsai movement. He shares with us his grandiose lifelong commitment to gnarly trees.

For those who were wondering, when he said he doesn’t fertilize the Yews, the lichen creates nitrates regularly when watered.

Dan's garden is so full of stories. I must have walked past that buttonwood deadwood a hundred times and always assumed it was juniper deadwood lol. There's always more to lean from Dan

Beautiful trees! All look so naturalistic. I won’t take them from the wild though. Shame to remove them from the mountain.

I'm in north Alabama and I leave my tridents out during winter . I had no ideal they didn't like cold weather. Is that true?

roots are just more susceptible to damage from freezing temperatures than acers or other similar trees.
