Been growing Bonsai for around 35 years had my ups and down and lost a few really great trees due to disease, storms and stupidity, one thing with this hobby is a school day with Bonsai. Also its great to see younger enthusiasts, as its so often seen as an old mans hobby.

I learn a great deal from your videos and really enjoyed the clip-and-grow technique. One thing I'd like to hear is what time of year you are making these changes - your weather and seasons are different than most of us - I'm near Philadelphia, PA and we must be well behind your temperatures. Also, if these techniques can also be applied to other trees, like elms, that would also be interesting. We have a ton of wild-growing elms here. Thanks - also loved the leaky tent video! 🙂

great video, again- tips well done- the video quality and production is brilliant! However, (and this is a general comment and in no way directly related to your videos)- is there some reason that nearly no-one gives good tips on collecting and collected trees? For anyone living in forested or countrified areas, this has to be the fun-est (is that a word?) and most excellent way to get real pre-bonsai that can then be worked over years (it's the way I'm doing quite a lot of things). The skills of collecting, early growing, and working towards bonsai on a thing that already has for instance a big trunk and very few roots is something that apparently doesn't get much talked about on youtube. Any thoughts for your thoughtful channel?
@attilacsintalan32854 ай бұрын
Great question. Attila here from the video. At least here in Ireland you would need to go through a lot of paperwork from councils to get permission to dig out or collect trees from the wild.
@notionbonsai4 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right that this aspect of bonsai doesn't receive as much attention on platforms like KZbin. It's a rich area where the skills of field collecting, early growth management, and long-term development play a crucial role. On my channel, I'll definitely consider creating content that dives deeper into these topics in the future. Attila is totally right, getting the correct permissions can be tricky - though if you know a land owner maybe they will let you collect. Always collect ethically if you do!
@rollmop994 ай бұрын
@@notionbonsai @attilacsintalan3285 Yes obviously putting moral and legal issues aside, which should be dealt with by the participant themselves of course- there are many people who have access to a lot of trees in the ground (and - for instance - a lot of farmers and foresters who'd like to be rid of them), so I think it'd be great to here more stories from folks who have tried and failed/succeeded. I'm guessing it isn't you though, which is totally fine. as you say, it is a whole new set of skills.

What a great video! I find some spontaneous growth in our garden sometimes so I might use them as a nice starter! 😂 The oak forrest in the beginning, was that from just 1 seed or did I misunderstand that one? 😅
@joegarland48854 ай бұрын
Hi Adam I-enjoyed your video on Oaks I especially love your shared videos you both work well together, oaks can be difficult as bonsai but you seem to have them under control, greenfly sure love your oaks they are all over it, time to spray with whatever you use to rid the trees of the little blighters, ants love them and will farm them so they get the sticky secretions left by them. I have not had much of a problem with green or black fly this year but I do seem to have a lot more ants than usual, they are everywhere.

Just aqcuired an oak seedling possibly 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old, it came from a beautiful old oak on the site of glastonbury festival in somerset England. It cried out Bonsai, and has naturally formed in an S shape. Having never done any bonsai growing before I'm beginning my research and starting to form a strategy, thanks for the guidance so far. Ive uploaded a vid to my channel showing the tree to be.

Hi Adam, just wondering if with the wire scars on the trunk, would it be possible to carefully carve, cut, smooth out the indentations of the wire in the trunk with a hobby knife/wood carving tool then apply cut putty to clean out the area to hopefully clean/reduce the imperfections over time? Apologies for the over inquisitive questions, I’m only new to bonsai. Cheers, Lee.. 🤙🏻
@razvan-rosu2 ай бұрын
Hey @notionbonsai, At the “creating shohin oak bonsai” section, you did a big cut and recommended high nitrogen afterwards. When did you actually do the big cut (season, month)? And is that time a good time to do big cuts on other species too?
