Jimmy Cornette, I think this angle about Dusty getting spiked by Animal and Hawk goes back to when the Russians took a cement block and hit Animal in the head with it and caused injury to Animal's orbital bone in the Greensboro Coliseum because Animal had to have a drainage tube put in between is eye and his nose at that time

King of The Hell fan as well. I do remember the Saturday night of watching this with my grandparents because my parents didn't have cable yet . I grew up in southwest Va 30 minutes north of Johnson City, TN. NWA, Memphis Wresting and later on in the early 90's Smoky Mountain Wresting. I moved to Ohio in Nov . 95 with my girlfriend and now my wife of 21years . We stopped watching WWE/old WWF . Old school wrestling is dead & gone. Its sad but thanks to all the Real Wrestling Fans i can find about anything i want on KZbin. Buddy landel was my parents neighbor , as i lived in Chilhowie ,Va all my life. I moved away for 3 years and within a year or two Buddy moved in 5 house's down from Mom & Dad. We miss Buddy dearly and all the old school wrestling days .

TBS got what they deserved for trying to ban blood on TV. How the hell can you ban blood in a combat sport? How naive could they be to think they knew more about how to run pro wrestling than Dusty Rhodes? They didn't have any idea about how the wrestling business worked. All these guys are supposed to get punched and kicked in the face and somehow never bleed? That exposed the business entirely. So TBS deserved to go out of business and they did get what they deserved. If you don't want violence on your TV station, don't air combat sports.

I believe, in my honest opinion, that the downfall of wrestling on the superstation can be traced back to this moment. What did Dusty think would happen? In defense of WTBS, they had to watch their ass, or risk being confronted by the FCC. I would fail as a booker, but what could have worked, was to have the Road Warriors ALMOST spike Dusty. Imagine the fans on the edge of their seat " Oh my God, oh my God, their going to spike big Dust!" Bring them to that edge, and then none other than the Midnight Express run in to save the day. BOOM! The Road Warriors are instant heels, and the MNE are beloved more than ever. It could have changed history.

Jeffrey Riley: I think it was partly security but also it was because of a "If you want something done right, gotta do it yourself" attitude. Dusty groomed Magnum to be his replacement somewhat and Flair did the same with Sting and according to Cornette- wanted to also do the same with Pillman.

The dirt sheets buried Rhodes if you go back and read them from this time. It's hard to tell who Meltzer hated more Dusty or McMahon. Bookers always had heat but by 88 it seems Dusty was very unpopular with the boys. Ron Garvin, R&R Express, Tully and Arn all left because of him and Flair would of but the Turner deal hinged on Flair being there. Since Flair was not loyal, Dusty then wanted Rick Steiner to beat Flair in a squash match at Starrcade. Because of his new influence Flair was able to go over Dusty and Crockett and get it changed. Fast forward a few years to 91 and Dusty is back as booker and Flair finally decided it is time to go.

Regardless of opinion of Dusty, I'd been watching NWA/Mid-Atlantic/whatever for several years as a teen, including going to live shows, when this came along. What killed everything was a combination of events. 1) Magnum TA's accident taking one of the biggest up and comers out of play completely. Then 2) The ridiculous attempt to turn the Road Warriors heel. That was just a bad decision on every level. Then 3) Dusty's gone. The bookings go to shit. The shows become barely watchable. I only learned many years later about Dusty's removal because of the "blood spike" incident, and I didn't even know Dusty was the booker back then. But I saw how bad things got after he left, and I found I quickly went from watch-every-week to "is that still on, I forgot about it". I watch random clips from WCW in the early to mid 90s and I realize I didn't miss anything. It never recovered, and started relying on style over substance. And the style was horrid. The glory days never came back.

Never did I think it would be okay to hit someone with a hammer or run a saw blade over their head. No one had to tell me this, I just knew better. Same with pro wrestling, I always knew it wasn't a legit fight/sport. However, I did know that if you really did some of the moves and holds you would seriously hurt someone or yourself. Like I always said, pro wrestling isn't fake it's fixed. Mad respect to all the wrestlers who endured such pain to entertain me through the years.
