I have a soft spot for Boog Powell, and for the 1969-1971 Orioles. More than that, I appreciate that team, as a baseball fan admiring excellence.

The Orioles were my team and I remember at school in 1970 they brought the TV in the cafeteria so we could see the World Series. That is what started baseball for me.

He has the best slugger's name. He was scary and mean at the plate and he's a great guy off the field.

I'll never forget being 9 tears old and waiting in line all day at Golden Ring mall to get his autograph. I was next in line and he stood up and said that's it he was leaving. I asked him if he could just please sign my hat and he said " sorry kid come see me play at the stadium " my mother called him a fat f#ck and screamed every name at him in the book . I will never forget that day lol.

If you remember the 1969 World Series, the games 3, 4 and 5 at Shea Stadium, their public address Announcer, Jack Lightcap introduced him as "John Powell." I only found out recently, a member of the Mets organization felt that the booing would be disrespectful. That request....came from Gil Hodges.

Hey Boog, was the biggest Oriole fan growing up and went to see Baltimore play Red Sox at Fenway,I was just 13 years old,Brooks Robinson was my favorite player, but I loved and followed the team all year, use to listen on radio and keep score on paper. That day at Fenway had turn into night and I waited around for autographs and you came out to get into can,and as a young kid was awestruck to see you,I went up to you and ask for your autograph and you look at me and said sorry I'm not a ball player, boy was I heartbroken , I had just watch you hit probably 1 of your few triple's, you had hit it so high by the time it hit the monster wall and bounce far away you were on third.I have to tell you Boog I never forget that day you couldn't take less than minute to give a big fan your autograph ,anyway I stay a loyal fan my heart broke when that amazing Mets made unbelievable plays, but after that Joy came,4 twenty game winners,Brooks,Frank,Dave,Mark, Elroy, Paul, and Don,what a team,it's been over 50 years Boog, and I never forget that day, cried all way home,my Dad had passed away year before, but my older brother told me it be alright and you were probably going to dinner, cause in those days they had double headers not this afternoon night game, still watching the birds back than made my childhood, you had I believe 1 of greatest teams ever and there will never be 4 twenty game winners on same team, ever, thanks for the memories Mr Powell,
