I was also using it to work through emotional damage and it gave me a place to escape to where I could avoid some of the feelings that were normally at the forefront of my mind. I made many friends and some I am still friends with some 13yrs later, it clearly was an addiction but it had many aspects that were beneficial. It sure as shit beat what a bunch of my "real life" friends did, tons of drugs lol. Anyway, love you Boogie! Super Mario 64 was the first video game i ever played and what a game to start with! The second I picked up that N64 controller i was hooked and couldn't put the game down and immediately after playing that game i popped in Zelda: Ocarina of Time and I went from someone who was interested in video games to a full blown hardcore gamer. The first video game and the ones after it are the games that have the most influence on you and by starting with these two games, i've been a gamer at heart ever since i was 3 years old. No regrets at all.

This video's old now, but I wanted to tell this story because of your EQ mention. My first experience with a game kind of like EQ was actually a MUD (multi-user text-based game) called MajorMUD on a local BBS. This BBS was actually previously known for having a good number of phone lines (eight) and having "Game Connection", which would let you play games like DOOM and Descent multiplayer. Four-player, which was the max at the time, DOOM & Descent actually worked really well via the BBS. Anyway, one day I logged into the BBS and *no one* was in Game Connection. Everyone was in this game called MajorMUD, which, as I mentioned, was completely text-based. This *blew my mind* at the time, and I continued to not understand until I tried it. Once I tried it, I became rather quickly addicted. After all, MajorMUD was basically Everquest with fewer people and no graphics. It had monsters, quests, cities, grouping, etc. Hell, the text you see in those text windows in Everquest and WoW are pretty similar to what you'd see playing the MUD. When Everquest did eventually come out and I played it, I was pretty quickly addicted. I actually ended up playing for a long time with a friend from that BBS. Ah, memories... I'm just always amazed, looking back, at how a text-based game completely took over this community that had previously been playing games like DOOM and Descent.

I remember how my parents always used to say that games would never get me anywhere, they'd never "do" anything for me, and so on... we've all heard it. But things like this really can change things for someone, change their entire life really... you never know. For me the list is: Guilty Gear, this one changed EVERYTHING for me. Everything. Not only did it get me into an entire genre, but it also got me meeting lots of new people through playing it, and got me into cosplay and conventions, which led to the first time I ever travelled on my own (and as someone with a form of autism, that was a HUGE thing for me) which has now become a regular thing for me... no, not even "regular" now, I do it really often at this point. It's led to so much more than all of that, too... just thinking about it, I'm amazed at how much it changed for me. My life would be VERY different (and probably not for the better) if I had never found this. Giga Wing: I do alot of bullet-hell games nowadays, or just hyper difficult games in general, and this is the one that started it. It's bloody easy for me now, but when I first played it, it seemed outright impossible. Surely nobody could ACTUALLY beat this thing, I thought. And then later, I tore through it and did beat it. It kinda showed me that with enough effort and confidence, anything can be done even if it seems ridiculous at first. Baroque, on the Wii: Nobody's ever heard of this. But it's one of my favorites, and got me into an entire genre. It also eventually led me to games like Isaac, and along with the bullet-hell games, eventually led to my chance to finally participate in MAKING a game, something I'd wanted to do since I was a little kid. And then that led to finding a whole new hobby to get into, alongside all the game-related stuff, thanks to the money made from it.

Just off the top of my head, mine are as follows: Adventure - Seeing it back in the day before computer games were a big thing really stoked my desire to be a programmer. Might and Magic 2 - Began a lifelong obsession with RPGs Everquest - One of the first times I'd been truly immersed in a computer game's world. City of Heroes - The creativity in creating and defining my hero was unparalleled. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Unique world combined with deep modding tools made it one of a kind Mass Effect - I don't think a videogame has ever told a story as effectively as ME in my opinion.

Loved this video Boogie, it's great how the old games all have these memories associated with them. A few of mine would be: 1. Super Mario Bros 1 & 2 (NES) - I still remember my brother getting a NES for Christmas when I was 3 years old, and I had no idea what a video game even was. These games were life changing. 2. Nights into Dreams (Saturn) - first game on my own first console that I felt a bond with, put effort into playing, and finished. It was tough as shit and one of those games I had to consult with the school playground for help - and fuck yeah I finished it. 3. Resident Evil (PS) - I learned about this game in 1996 when I was 9 or 10, and I think it was the first sincere hype I ever felt about a game, and it lived up to it. Just that cartoon imge of the Tyrant in some magazine, and there was no going back. Every story I had to write in English class for the next few years would be based on this game. 4. Dark Souls (PS3) - in my early 20s I fell out with games and took a long break from them. Dark Souls pulled me back in with all that childhood excitement and obsession I'd been missing. Nice one!

Kingdom Hearts II was an amazing game that influenced me and my love for video games. When I first heard about it and what you could do by meeting Disney characters that's why I so wanted to purchase a copy for it for my PS2. I played it and I was just sitting there wondering to myself "When am I gonna meet Donald and Goofy?" But I surprisingly wasn't bored, I actually got invested in the story and the characters Roxas and what he was going through. It really opened my eyes. And also leveling up and gaining new abilities and synthesizing new weapons was something I learned for the first time as I was going along.

In fact, I had a friend who lived with me at my parents house ( i was about 15 when I started playing) and I would play all day while he slept, and he would play all night. (I quit school to play this game, not proud of that but it's true). Annnd I went back for more playing for several years pretty hard on project 1999 emulated server! Some of my greatest gaming memories are from everquest. I legit tear up sometimes recounting them.

I am 15, my Dad has a super NES. I actually really enjoy playing a lot of games on it, so they must just be really really good games. XD Or I am easily entertained. To be fair, I am playing them with my siblings and we are laughing at the butts on the backs of the characters in Double Dragon every time they climb a ladder. I do play all of the Mario games by myself however. I have not been able to beat the game without using a cheat, like the warp zone. I could never really get into Legend of Zelda because it is really difficult, and every time I open it, I die immediately. I will give it another try. XD

The first game I played was actually Pacman on my Dad's NES, but he didn't let me play it enough to get hooked. I was like 4. Then I played this computer game about the Wizard of OZ for a really long time and beat that game like 20 times before my mom took it away from me and gave it to my Cousin because she thought I was obsessed. (I was definitely obsessed. It was like magic. I was 5) The really *GAME CHANGING* thing for me was the Wii. My Dad got that thing, and I saw him playing it and I was just amazed. It was the coolest thing. I finally managed to get him to let me play it, I was 10, and I played Super Mario Bros New. And I was obsessed. Every day after school, I would come home and play that game until I beat another world. To this day, I still know every single secret and cheat. That definitely changed my life. Some other favorite obsessions were paper mario, Super mario galaxy, Castle miner and then Minecraft. My journey has not been alone, very much with my brother and sister. I fear I will never be able to move out of the house because they make up much of my life. Probably too much of my opinion on things.

When you were talking about SMB and seeing it played on an arcade machine two things popped in my head of what you may have seen. There was the PlayChoice 10 which had 10 NES games you can choose from. You put in X amount of quarters in to play the game which had a timer and when the timer ran out the system reset to the main menu. It had two monitors where the main monitor was the game and the other monitor had the list of games and then if my memory serves me correctly it had a leader board during gameplay? Another NES related arcade machine I can recall was "vs Super Mario Brothers" and there was a sitdown version and a stand up version. I remember seeing these in bars. I only seen 3 games in my travels one being SMB. The others were Goonies and Donkey Kong Jr. There may have been more but those were the common ones when i saw that type of machine.

Totally agree with the FFVII and Legend of Zelda influence. So influential in my life as well. However, some feedback if you will: I'd actually prefer that your Francis character go away forever or only show up for moments in videos never have total videos of Francis. To be honest I almost didn't subscribe because I thought that's all there was. It wasn't until Joe Vargas (Angry Joe) asked his subscribers to check out one of your videos that I saw the real you and I really enjoyed it. So... there you go. Keep it up brother!

I got into video games pretty late and when they were hitting their stride so I love hearing about people who were alive when games like Pac Man came out. Also got me thinking what my picks would be... probably some of the following... Super Mario 64 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Age of Empires Diablo II Halo Conflict: Desert Storm Counter Strike Star Wars: Battlefront Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Fable The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Uh oh... I could probably add more...

Hey Boogie, I just noticed that we are born the same year..Grats for the awesome 74 :P First console for me that got me in to gaming was an Atari 2600, I was so sick most of my childhood so my dad bought me that console, and after that I was hooked, cant remeber the game I played the most, but I can still remeber the grafics :) And after that I went over to nintendo and Snintento and then to ps1 and so on. But I got a comendore 64 and a few games that really had an inpact was "Wings, Giana sisters, Law of the west,, ik+, barbarian,. Then came the amiga, and what a bump up in grafics that was with titals like "another world, Defender of the crown, Moonstone, Loom, it came from the desert, the secret of monkey island" I know I have forgotten alot of the games I played but these are some of them, and these are just until I got my first ps1.

As Playstation gamer I never played Final Fantasy, untill this day it's one of those series I hear and read about but never played. For me however, Metal Gear Solid was everything and I played every game from the series I could get my hands on, it's a big part of my life. And I collect as much as I can about it...but not MGS Survive, MGS "died" when Kojima was kicked out of Konami. Still hate Konami to this day, nothing good about them anymore. Another great video again Boogie, here's me waiting for a part 2 by the way! And the other 6 that were a big part untill now: Bioshock Destruction Derby Dragon Age Fallout The Elder Scrolls Socom US Navy Seals (especially 2)

Final fantasy VII was THE game that turned me from a kid who played games sometimes into a gamer. That was the first time I realized that games could be more than a way to pass the time. They could be works of art, inspiring emotions and ideas that were previously unknown to me. The thought that I could form a real emotional attachment to a character (I bawled like a bitch when Aerith died) was so profound to me that it has strongly influenced who I am today. I love to write, I love to make my own little comics. If I EVER manage to recreate that sense of real bonding for another person with a character I've created that will be the pinnacle of my life achievements.

I'm a tiny bit younger than you, so in my case: Super Mario Bros, i was 4 years old and competing against my father to see which one could go the farthest in the game Zelda Links Awakening, first Zelda i ever had (later a friend bought a SuperNES, so i bought 40 of his NES games for like 5$) Rock'n'Roll racing, the game that made me very competitive Secret of Mana, AKA the fake Final Fantasy led me to Final Fantasy VII Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun made me a jerk, sadistic, waiting for my friends to be proud of their stuff and blow it up. Star Wars Galaxies, i spent so much time on it, roleplay made me understand to not trust people on internet Mass Effect, just as epic as getting intimate with an alien specie.

Hey Boogie, do you remember what server you played on in Everquest? I played on three different ones, but I can't remember the names. I know two were PvP servers, and I think one was called Terris Thule. Man, that game was such a time sink! There was a reason we called it "Evercrack" right? Have you ever checked out Project 99? I played it for a few months just to get the feel for what was my first true MMO love, but it's just not the same. Very close, but not quite the same.

Kinda of brings me a little joy to know that Boogie's story is so much like my own, even down to the games. I have a few differences, but they're in my top list because of them being so memorable, or having a special story attached to them. I definitely would put Warcraft and FF7 like Boogie. Super Mario World (SNES), Quake (PC) and Age of Empires (PC) would probably round out my games. I think mine are this: Super Mario World (SNES) - Lots of personal stuff with this one Quake (PC) - My first competitive FPS where I played other people (Gamespy servers!) Age of Empires 2 (PC) - Not my first 4X Strategy game but the only I played online forever and met some of my very first online friends (Shout out to IceD if you're out there bud!) Xwing vs Tie Fighter (PC) - Another first for me was becoming the commander of a fighter wing for a clan. I helped lead the clan and was the lead pilot in battles. Gears of War (Xbox) - My first Xbox game, bought it with the settlment I got for suriving a nasty car wreck. Got to play with Gamespy editors before the site was closed down. World of Warcraft (PC) - My umpteenth MMO but one of my favorites, many friends were made, and lost. I'll remember the friends and the late nights on chat more than boss fights. Final Fantasy 7 (PS) - This game is the game i think about when people ask me what's my favorite game of all time, what game is special to me, etc.

Back in the early 90's I found a love for Arcades games like Galaga not the ripoff Galaxian (kind of the Mega blocks vs Legos) and no there not the same. Galaga influenced me heavily in my youth with its sound effects of the blasters, alien ships, and title music along with the challenging patterns your forced to memorized to win. Galaga was the game to geek out on. one thing I remember is losing a life on by having your ship get captured and when you get it back you feel immortal with the double ship blasters. I remeber ever time it was re-released on Nentendo, Playstation, and even pc I had to have it and spent days not eating or sleeping till I got a grove going and the family pet tripped the power cord and had to start over on wave one after making it to wave 300.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Enlightened me about what video games really could deliver. 5. Suikoden II - One of my favorite RPGs that isn''t exactly a mainstream game. 6. BioShock - The game that influenced me to take up Ayn Rand's philosophy, which encouraged my life to do things for myself 7. Skyrim - One of the biggest games I've played in, and still wasn't bored after beating it.

Some of the most influential games of my life were probably Super Mario Bros for the NES, then you have Contra which was a favorite of my brother's and mine, then in 2000 when the OG Xbox came out there was a number of good games but two of the biggest for me were Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic(Which is bar none one of my all time favorites) And Thief: Deadly Shadows. Those were the biggest games up until 2008 when The Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion was released. That game was, and is, huge and a favorite of mine especially the Shivering Isles DLC. And, of course, the biggest game of 2011, Skyrim. Skyrim is one of those games you HAVE to mention, you just have to. I still play Skyrim to this day. It is overall a great and fantastic game. From 2011-2017 have been nice, but nothing else has really stuck. Hoping to find the next great game some time this year! Cheers, Boogie. Thanks for the video.

My childhood was largely influenced by video games. My earliest memories of my dad are playing together on his Nintendo 64 when my mom went to work. We used to play goldeneye, Mario kart, and many others. I used to get up every Saturday morning and I would setup the Nintendo 64 and play games for hours until someone got up, some of the best memories of my life. One Saturday morning, I woke up, as normal, and went downstairs to setup the n64, and it was missing. I immediately called my dad at work, who after questioning me on why I was up at 5:00 am, he told me he didn't know where it was. When he got home, he sat down 6 year old me, and told me that money was tight and he had to sell the n64. I was crushed. Here is my list. Super Mario land 2 Donkey long '94 depthcharge Mario kart 64 pac man Space invaders Ocarina of time

As someone who waas a small child during the sudden expansion of gaming in the late 80's and early 90's, I can vibe with this. Mario was the first game I ever played and beat. At the age of 3. My father got it when he was in the military to play it in his off time, and I played it when he was on base. And got good lol. Mario Kart would be the game that I had gotten amazing at and consistently beat my father at which subsequently made him quit playing. But Doom sunk it for me. I became obsessed with Doom and then Diablo and Diablo 2. I got a cheap Dell when I was in middle school to play those games. And finally the final nail in the coffin and my absolute favorite game of all time, Counter-Strike 1.6. I miss those days...

That is actually a pretty interesting thing to think about. I can't pretend to be particularly interested in all the other lists posted in the comments here though, so I don't expect people to care about mine either. But mainly as a fun thing to do I will post my list as well :D I think the games (in order of importance) for me was: - Counter strike 1.1-1.6, introduced me to competitive gaming and LAN-parties. - World of warcraft, played a couple of hours a day on average from day 1 of the open beta, not buying WOTLK was my way out. Still some of the most found memories I have of gaming though. - Warcraft 3 / Dota - Apart from Red Alert 2, Wc3 was the only rts game I actually sunk a lot of time into, and the only one I seriously tried to get good at, played a whole lot of ladder games. And when we (my friends and I) got into custom games that took over our LAN-parties for a while. All the tower defence maps, Hero arena, Hero line wars etc and finally Dota. Played Dota for quite some time but that eventually died, never got into HON, LOL or any other Moba though. But when Dota 2 came out I was all in again... until the horrible community finally killed that, it's sad that that is just something that is a part of online gaming today. - Doom 2 - First fps game I played, one of the first games I played in general. Never played it seriously though, I remember playing with a friend controlling the movement and I the space bar, or the opposite. Always with cheat codes, IDDQD, IDKFA, IDCLEV will never leave my head. - Diablo - Got me into the whole fantasy gaming thing and RPGs, but I played Diablo 2 more. - Neverwinter nights - All time favourite game, easily, I'm afraid to back because it will certainly not be as good as I remember it being though. And in no particular order: - The Sims - Rollercoaster tycoon - SimTown, SimCity(a few versions), SimPark - Bygg båtar med Mulle Meck - Half Life

For me it was back in 1994 I was 7 years old and my first console was the snes. 1 - Donky Kong Country 1, I must of played it for hours and hours. 2 - Mario Kart, this was the game what got me in to racing games Then in 1996 I got my second console for Christmas and it was a ps1, the graphics for the time was amazing going from a 2D snes to a semi 3D console. 3 - my first game for my PS1 was Final Fantasy 7 I was obsessed with this game and still to this day i still am, over the past 20 years I most of clocked hundreds of hours and it's still one of those games still to this day I truly enjoy, after all this time. 4 - Gran Turismo 1 was the first racing game, what I played and felt like I was driving a real car, I enjoyed the so much I got a steering wheel for it. 5 - This is probably the game what got me back in to game, I must of been 20 or 21 years old and I was finding I was not enjoying game as must as I use to or finding games a disappointing or the same, but when mass effect for the xbox 360 came out, I found myself drawn back to playing games again like when I got Final Fantasy 7.

Really enjoyed the video, please make a follow up! Anyway some of the games that influenced my life. Star Trek: The Next Generation on the original Game Boy. My first ever video game, I was about 7 years old, my parents got me a Game Boy, I begged for one since my older brother had one, and since I watched TNG as a kid with my parents they got it for me. It was so much fun to just pilot the Enterprise and fight things. Super Mario World on the SNES. Something my brother, my dad and I played together that we got for Christmas. I remember one day my dad came home from work and told my brother and I there were 96 levels in the game, and it became my mission to find them all. Escape Velocity on the PC. You get to command your own Starship and explore the galaxy, gaming bliss for my middle school years. Was only available on the Mac. Diablo II: My first online multiplayer game on a server, ate up probably a few years of my gaming life through high school. Eve Online: My first MMORPG introduced to me in college (I have terrible friends). I played dedicated for about 6 years, made alot of friends that I still have to this day even though I've stopped playing since college ended.

I was born in '81. The first time I saw Mario 1 was in '87 in a toystore with my parents and brother. I had an Atari 2600 at this point so this blew me away. Thing is, they had kept the NES and controllers in a locked box so you couldn't actually play. What they didn't consider was that the hole where the cables went through was big enough for me to fit my hands through so I was able to grab the controller and play the game. It was magical. We weren't well off at all so there was no way my dad was gonna buy me one. The next day I was home alone until the evening and I couldn't help but think of the game so what I decided was to hop on my bike, ride my 6 year old ass to the town 10 miles away where the toystore was and play the game again. In this day and age, that seems unthinkable. Of course I never told my parents what I had done. Eventually it did take until christmas '88 to finally get my own NES.

My parents had an NES before I was born and when I was about 3 or 4 I got to play it and I remember the first game I ever played on the system, Iron Tank, I was terrible and didn't get very far, then I played LoZ on the NES and though I was young and didn't really understand what to do, I ran around and swung my sword at everything. Consoles have been a huge part of my life ever since, but if I had to pick one game which influenced me above all else I would say Pokemon Yellow. I have no idea how many sets of batteries I went through playing that game but playing pokemon was my everything for the following year. I took my gameboy with me everywhere and somehow it survived all the times I dropped it. Still have it and Yellow to this day, occasionally I put a set of batteries in it and power it up for old times sake.
