Why would Tonali be in the team to score goals? He's never been a goal-scoring midfielder. He scored 7 goals for Milan in 130 games; he's playing him in a role he isn't suited for. His heat map from his Milan days clearly has him playing a much deeper role. His set piece delivery is also top notch. It's actually weird watching the way Howe is trying to use him.

I'm sorry Craig but our press pack are an absolute disgrace and that Press Conference today was an embarrassment. You'd think we were 5 points clear at the top of the league if you didn't know any better. From Edwards criticising fans and calling them entitled and then writing puff pieces, Lee Ryder asking whether James Bunce is helping and others asking the tamest questions possible it's beyond a joke now. Usually it's asking him whether he prefers Oasis or Blur ffs. Bruce would never get anywhere near the leniency and kind questioning Howe gets. Today I appreciate Howe was asked about our midfield, but surely you (or someone else) should be taking him to task when he says it's not a problem, when you and others repeatedly disagree with that outside the press room. The only question of substance today put to Howe was about set pieces and even then he fell back on xG as a cover story. I appreciate as journalists (this isn't necessarily a criticism of yourself, I think you're one of the better ones) yous need to ensure you still keep the communication channels available and have to keep some semblance of a relationship with the manager, but our press is bordering on being club mouthpieces than journalists now.

What's the solution? It's difficult to say....changing Manager is not going to help, reinforcing in January will help, showing patience will help, but as supporters that's bloody hard to do watching these performances. Straight into the usual anti-Tonali spiel and later on too . Groundhog Day . Hopefully for Sandro he’ll get snapped up by a top club who’ll play him in the centre in January . Mind you, Eddie’ll be out by then. For me it’s the automatic nature of the Tonali substitutions. I can already tell you from now that Tonali will start and be taken off between 65-70th minute against both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest; irrespective of how the game is going. He does have a knack of auto cue-ing substitutions. Last season he had Barnes and Wilson to come on for Isak and Gordon on auto-cue. They always came on together; never separately. I just think subs should be based on the current game and how it’s playing out. At times Bruno isn’t playing as well as Tonali but he gets to stay on even though there is an option to sub Bruno and allow Tonali to take on the Bruno role as orchestrator of the midfield.
@stevenphillips449411 сағат бұрын

The midfield has felt particularly ineffective since the city game (and some of the Brighton game), and I think a large part of that is that there is so little for them to actually link up. With the wingers staying wide and the fullbacks overlapping them, the outlets when Newcastle have possession are pretty much marked out of being effective if the opposing fullback goes right to the winger and the midfielder tracks the run of hall/tino. That leaves the forward pass really only capable of going towards Isak, who has to drop deep to collect, compressing the game even further, or having to take the ball between both centerbacks. For the most part, this is what seems responsible for the sideways/back passing. As for the press, I think the midfield is supposed to make forward runs in possession to free up 1v1s for the front three, but with most of those players too easily marked out of the game, and the frequency of possession loss, they are out of position to cover against the counter. It seems simple. They stop pressing because they’re worried about the transition.

Long one coming.... For me that is the midfield 3 we need, just in a different set up. Tonali's 2 games back for Italy and he was phenomenal in the left of a 3. His quick, creative passing would suit Gordon or Barnes on that side with their pace in behind. Bruno has always had that good relationship and understanding with Miggy and Tripps on the right. Joe sitting, being an enforcer, not necessarily a playmaker but breaking things up. He would have saved Burn n Schars 'need' to press Palmer in that position. I think he could thrive as the 6 if he took less risks and played as simple as possible. Another point on set pieces. I watched Tonali after we signed him at Euros (21s) and again in his recent games for Italy and his corners were wicked to say the least. It's beggars belief that he does not take them for us. Incidentally, I thought other than set plays he was anonymous at u21 euros but for that......he played right of a 3 man midfield. Would love you to question Eddie on the corners and Tonali taking them if nothing else. If you can, look back. They were so dangerous.

An example is Barnes losing the ball deep in their half for thsir break and subsequent goal. Decision making at the back, Schar sliding in and mis timing the tackle on Neto. Isak's decison making when he didn't pass the ball late on. A dreadful VAR decison when Bruno was through on goal. These are all fine margins thet either, aren't going our way, or are down to the points I made earlier. It could have been so different and therefore a completely diffrenet presser.

Tonali facts. £55 mill fee; £10 mill wages, 1 goal; 0 assists; creates nothing; can’t last 90 mins; banned for 10 months… Another fact. Lewis Miley who cost nothing and is paid a fraction of our “ Italian Superstar” had a far greater impact on Newcastle’s midfield when he played last year when he was 17… Tonali has been a massive let down apart from his debut against Villa… If we could get our money back I’d sell him tomorrow….

You disappoint me Craig. Sunday’s game raised far more important issues than whether Tonali’s substitution should have been booed. After Sunday’s performance you said on your video that the problems were formation ( I agree ) and players playing out of position ( I agree ) . Both these issues are down to the Manager , and yet you continue to be soft on Eddie Howe and pull your punches on him. Why didn’t you confront him on this at the press conference? To waste your opportunity to hold him to account by instead asking the uncontroversial question “ is tomorrow’s game season-changing ? “ in order to get a quote for your headline is such a pity.

I would try 4,1,3,2 with Tonali in front of the back 4 to help them and cover our slowish midfield 3.Can’t wait for Miley to come back,one of our class players.As for the right side Tino is a great overlapping option,better than Miggy !! It’s time to try options because the next 3 games WILL define our season and Eddies future IMO.Great video Craig.On point as ever.

Not sure why some fans are so defensive of Tonali. He's a tidy passer, but not exactly a game-changer. If anything he's lucky to be starting based on his form. He needs to do more.
@LloydCreagh13 сағат бұрын
When Tonali played for Milan he seemed to be everything we needed to add to our midfield. He’s played 17 games now (could be wrong) and other than 1 or 2 games where he’s shown moments of class he’s been quite poor imo. Which is worrying because he’s got the talent around him to show his class. He’s had almost a year to get fit enough and strong enough for the PL but can’t seem to show it in matches. Is it because the three of them in midfield don’t work together? Or could be something as simple as he’s just not settled here and isn’t happy?
@edwardmeehan23648 сағат бұрын
Something is up but also, with Milan and Italy he was/is playing with elite players. We don’t have a squad of elite players. We have a few but they’re unable to flourish in the current squad. The top dogs need to make some decisions and also make some shrewd financial decisions. The bubble has burst but I’m sure we will get back to winning ways whether it’s under Howe or a new manager. Things have gone stale. An injection of new blood would definitely help the current squad. Then fan base are deflated at the moment and there is no better feeling than when we are firing and winning. I know we can’t win every game but this season is scary at the moment. A win against Chelsea in the Cup might lift their confidence but we need at least 3 signings in January or at least a right winger and striker. They don’t even have to be household names just grafters who can put a shift in. We all need a lift! 🖤🤍

Apologies for the long comment but a lot to unwrap from that press conference and the game at the weekend! I don't boo & don't think booing a sub is helpful even if I think the subs are increasingly confusing (for the record I just checked & Tonali was subbed at 62 mins as usual against Forest). I agree we have to use our eyes & not just stats - my eyes tell me that chasing the game even a tired Tonali is a better bet than Longstaff. That's not to hate on Longstaff, he was no better or worse than anyone else when he came on against Chelsea but I'd hope there's nobody going to suggest he's a better footballer than Tonali. We have to be incredibly grateful to Howe for the job he has done since he came in and I want him to succeed but it does feel like he gets a free pass on some things. Me, my friends at the match and those who watch on TV and even True Faith can pretty much predict the subs made and when they will be made. Similarly there's a lot of talk about lack of support in the transfer windows (and PSR) and that's fair. By his own comments in the summer Howe admitted he was heavily involved until Mitchell so he's at least in part culpable for blowing the budget we did have on 2 left wingers and 2 CM who want to do the same thing and a backup CF he only trusts with 5 mins. It's a continuation (or worsening) of last season but without the mitigation of extra games & injuries. I don't see training but based on matches I find it staggering he doesn't think there's a problem in midfield.

We aren’t usually a booing bunch. There was reluctance to boo Steve Bruce after some of the most disgraceful performances in the clubs history. I think fans started booing when we drew 1-1 at home to Leeds after Raphinha scored but we improved.

Anyway Sandro hasnt pulled up any trees yet but just like the team/squad hes stuttering. Has our front foot atracking football disappeared due to rhe fear of playing that way and the injuries it caused last season? Great video Craig

For tomorrow’s game against Chelsea I would shift Tonali to the left with Bruno in the center and Longstaff on the right. If Gordon is not available then I would put Joey up front on the left with Isak and Murphy. Hall, Burn, Schar, and Tino in the back or Trippier if he can go.
@littlewood619 сағат бұрын
Perhaps Tonali would be able to show his stuff in a different style of football. Plodding forward/backward doesn’t look like his style.

My worry for the Chelsea game is just lack of options if we need to chase the game there is an inability to freshen up the final 3rd when Gordon & Wilson are out. I’m hoping the team performance might improve once Botman id back and we can play a higher line and that will help the team knit back together
@stevemartin110713 сағат бұрын
I would change the system personally. 3-5-2 Use wing backs . 3 centre half’s to be solid with wing backs asked to run their hearts out and change at 60 mins . 5 across the middle to flood the area . Not sure with Gordon out though who plays along side Isak . I know Howe won’t . Your thoughts Craig ?

Supporters have a right to boo if they are not happy with a decision if they do not agree with it. Fans pay an absolute fortune to attend games (particularly away from home) and whilst i understand Eddie saying it doesn't necessarily help the player coming on maybe he would do well to take on board what the message is from the fans regarding substitutions and certain players coming off all the time during the same time during games
@jrws8919 сағат бұрын
another point i would make as well is that this team is absolutely crying out for Lewis Miley. Appreciate that he isn't there at the moment with coming back from the injury but i think he would be that perfect foil in midfield against what we have at the moment

Feels like it needs a formation change. The formation we never deviate from was successful when running ourselves into the ground and pressing throughout the side. Now that's gone, it isn't working, and we are too easy to play through. Can't understand booing though at this stage, if we were to lose next 3 then maybe but Tonali hasn't really done anything to not be taken off, although you could throw that at nearly every player

I think Eddie needs to be much more creative; go 4-1-3-2 but have Joelinton sit in front of the back four)doing the destroyer role that David Batty, Rob Lee used to ) Tonali left midfield, Bruno middle and assuming Gordon is missing, Longstaff or Willock right midfield, Isak and Barnes up front. Big Joe gets straight onto Palmer when they have possession. And he pushes up when we have the ball.

Eddie Howe makes the same mistakes all the time and doesn’t seem to learn from them. Same formation every game, subs always between 60-65 mins that weaken us when we’re chasing the lead, rarely plays his best side, scared to drop his underperforming favourites, weak tactically and so it continues game after game. I love Eddie and the way he develops players but his in game management is woeful. Stevie Wonder can see things before he does.
