As CloudCuckoo held the novel in his hands he started to think about the narrative implications of owl sex. What on earth could he have been thinking? Had he had some sort of accident or brain damage or illness or was the internet starting to get to-and CloudCuckoo suddenly started to feel a sudden influx of panic-to him, transforming him, oh how abominable to form such a conditional hypothesis, was he becoming like certain humans he had heard of, who enjoyed the fetishization of non-human animals? Oh by some ironic twist of irony, it cannot be true!

I remember reading the Warrior Cats series when I was younger and being very shocked. There was also a Hitler-cat, who sought to kill all "mixed-clan" cats; a cat-law that had to be passed to prevent CHILD SOLDIERS, with a very gruesome passage describing the slaughter of one of these kittens in battle; along with a cat suffering a miscarriage and bleeding out on the "Sunningrocks". Luckily, all "sex scenes" were just tastefully described as "two cats lying with each other". Despite the bloodier aspects, I still loved the series and would recommend it to anyone, young or old, who wants to delve into some more questionable middle-grade fiction.

Redwall/10. I didn't collect more than the first four books, though I'm kinda curious to do so, just to see how the meta-storyline plays out (because that was a strong aspect in the book; bloodlines are as connected throughout the main characters as they are in Star Wars) and how it has aged, but man, them are some gorey books. Lots of mustelids getting cut in half (weasels, stoats, etc. are type-cast as bandits and mercenaries, due to being predatory critters), other forms of disembowelment and organ loss, foxes getting their face 'melted' of a sort by venomous snake poison, and, of course, in those books, one of the 'Deus-Ex Machina' ways villains are dealt with is falling in the creek-- the one that is endemically infested with pike throughout the ages. You can guess what happens after someone falls in with the sharp-toothed fishies.

I've actually read the Silverwing books by Kenneth Oppel, and remember liking them, though on reflection the sequels went completely bonkers and there was quite a bit of graphic violence. Bats are burned alive, one has his heart ripped out of his chest and eaten, another has their wings pecked off while still a child...and the running plot in Sunwing is about how a military experiment is turning bats into unwilling suicide bombers. It's also in that book where the protagonist gets sonar powers (the climax involves him using sonar to make a bomb hover in midair to prevent an explosion). Then in Firewing the main character's son travels to bat hell! There's so much fire and bats get devoured by the vengeful bat god of the underworld. And in the prehistoric prequel Darkwing prehistoric hyenas are stripped to the bone while still alive by carnivorous shrews.

This sounds like such an odd novel. At the most base level, the choice of owls doesn't even make sense! Beyond them being there due to the title's tie to the poem, nothing is gained by the use of owls in this novel- whose base purpose seems to be to spout conservative musings on moral and political values? I'm pretty sure that's what the reason for it. It strikes on feminism, homosexuality, bestiality, prostitution, and seems to be caught on the homeland of the Jewish- with some possible anti-semitism I picked up on if I'm not mistaken? That's what I felt was being referred to when the man-behind-the-curtain antagonist was accused of aristocratism, having a land owned by their ancestors for centuries, wanting to dismantle and take over others' societies, etc... It's just a bunch of ideas that are shoehorned bluntly into a story posing as an epic novel. They aren't reflected upon, or contributed to by the inclusion of the characters being owls. Just "feminism sometimes conflicts with meritocratic values, but is sometimes right... or maybe they're deluded?", "homosexuals are ooky-spooky", "bestiality is committed by people who are crazy and bear a likening to homosexuals", and "Aha, I have exposed you for the fraud you are, you filthy Jew! Now go back to your homeland and stop corrupting our society!". And, yes, there was a fair bit of likening between homosexuality and being of an unfit state of mind, and a bit less firmly to bestiality. The fact that Hunter felt uneasy to be locked in a cage with Humanoid would be because of either two things: either Hunter felt he might be raped by Humanoid, or he felt he was in an otherwise harmful position for his bodily/mental health beause of Humanoid's presence. I wouldn't put it past Hocke to suggest the first one due to the protagonist almost raping his best friend/ interracial girlfriend, being unfaithful, and in general not being able to control his "urge" (the implication being that males can't help but to be unfaithful rapists, naturally), but, if I'm not mistaken, there were suggestions that Humanoid wasn't entirely well, which was the reason for the jump from "he's infertile" to "oh no, he's a homosexual?!?" And of course, it just turns out that he's crazy and is into bestiality, a totally tactful narrative twist for a character just suspected of homosexuality. Just... what is this book? If it would have just been an adventure about anthropomorphised owls, okay, that's fine. But he just tosses in a bunch of controversial topics in there without critical reflection on them at all.
@CloudCuckooCountry
@CloudCuckooCountry 6 жыл бұрын
I suspect that the thought might've just started as: "I want to write a fantasy story about owls for young adults and children." but then Hocke may have become a bit political while writing it and decided to just start inserting his musings about various topics into the story. It's difficult to tell, as there's no way of knowing for sure aside from asking Hocke himself, but since he's dead and there's not a lot of other information on him out there, I can only speculate. I'm not surprised that someone wrote a book like this. Like I said, this still isn't half as offensive as a lot of self-published fanfiction out there, but I'm just astounded that a publisher read this and decided to take a chance on it. I know that stories can change a lot in the editorial process, but publishers are notoriously risk-averse, so I don't think an editor would add something like an almost-rape scene committed by the protagonist into the story. Even assuming that Hocke is solely responsible for those scenes, I still have no idea how it made it through publication. Copyeditors aren't the types of people who are afraid to just draw a big red X over a chapter and say "Cut this whole thing". One other possibility is that the novel was approved, but they didn't or couldn't find an editor for it (which I'm willing to believe considering the grammar just dies in a few paragraphs, like the one showcased in this video). A friend of mine who has written a novel has even said that the publisher he had a contract with made a mistake and ran the pre-final copy of his own novel through the printers, which was exactly the same as the final copy except that it still had a bunch of typos. So now when customers read his novel, they find lots of typos and become frustrated. So I'm also not ruling out publisher incompetence as an explanation. From what I know, the publisher, Grafton Books, was never a notable brand and it appears to have been dissolved by HarperCollins around 1993. So there you go.
@Yawyna124

Indeed, I have read some pretty... janky books in my time. The librarians at my junior high (don't know what that would be for you, but it's kind of an intermediary portion of schooling between primary and secondary) would occasionally clear out any particularly poorly written novels out of the schools collection and I would sometimes pick one up and read through it before they were disposed of. Thankfully, a lot of bad books fall under the "this sounds like it was not only written for a sixth grader, but also written by one" category instead of the "how many words can I use to describe a lightbulb in a single sentence" category, so they tend to be quick reads. I find the lack of quality editorial work a likely plausibility for the sort of thing where it's a publisher that will take anything, while not providing much of anything as a service for the author. I also agree with the perspective that it may have started as a fantasy book for young adults and children and adapted over time. He seems as though he was a man who was busy with other occupations besides writing novels, and as this was his first, for it to be a passion project corrupted by a man's frustrations with society as he iterated upon it isn't unreasonable. I just find it baffling how badly shoe-horned into the novel the "adult" concepts are, editor or not. How does one look upon their writing with which they have taken to with all the subtlety and sensitivity of using a ten-pound maul to nail on your roof shingles, and think, "yes, I have done well"? So much wasted potential in anthropomorphising creatures to reflect upon human qualities and actions, especially when using a creature with such an expressive physiology and a mystique to them as owls. Just one last comment, for now: an example that illustrates how he could have done so much better by using traits of the species. Instead of posing diplomacy as the base state of the organization of a civilized group of owls, and the man-behind-the-curtain 'owl owl' as leading them into a negative advancement, why not use the trait of them being raptors, and have their natural organization be a domination-based dictatorship, as one would expect from a bunch of murder-birds? That way he could have the established diplomacy, at threat of falling, be posed as them overcoming their destructive, bestial, ways, and thus driving out the 'owl owl' is not preventing new developments, but overcoming a destructive old that is uncompatable with civilized society? Dunno, food for thought for a dead man. Badly written book is badly written. We'll never know why he wrote it the way that he did, but we know how and why to not fall into the same pitfalls. Just a curiosity, have you taken a look at the other couple of books that he wrote in what is apparently a trilogy? I found the book's wikipedia article, by the way. Turns out it has an alternative title, "The Ancient Kingdom of Silence", and that is what the wikipedia article is under. The other two books in the trilogy were not fortunate enough to receive an article themselves.

In Australia, we only have Primary and High schools. No middle-school, junior-high, or anything. Primary covers grades 0-6 and high covers grades 7-12, though it can vary exactly from state to state. I found quite a few neat gems in the $1 bins at my high school library. The one I keep touting is, of course, Dragoncharm, but you'd be surprised how many decently entertaining reads you can find in bargain bins. I don't know that I could say The Ancient Solitary Reign was the worst _overall_ but it was the worst that I read to completion. I wasn't able to track down a copy of The Lost Domain (Book #2 in the series), however from what I read of it online, it appears to be the same story again, but from the perspective of a different character. It seems strange to me that there would be another novel after The Ancient Solitary Reign, as Book #1 followed Hunter from birth to death and appeared to be a complete chronicle of his entire life. It might be a situation similar to Dragoncharm in the sense that the first novel was written to stand on its own as a complete story, but then the idea for additional installments came later on. It's possible that The Ancient Solitary Reign being made into a series was part of the initial contract between author and publisher. I've heard (particularly when it comes to fantasy novels) that publishers draw up contracts not simply to publish one novel, but that commission several other novels in advance from authors whom they agree to work with. As for me: I'm not inclined to revisit Martin Hocke's work ever again. I wanted to make a video on this novel and how offensive it was ever since I began talking about literature on this channel in 2013, but now I'm satisfied enough to put Martin Hocke behind me for good. If The Lost Domain is to be dragged kicking and screaming into the limelight, it certainly won't be by me.

Look what you've done Cloud. You've driven Antony to drink! And not to mention what will happen to his premiums if his insurers saw this. Alternative title for this vid: How owl sex broke a man and burned his house down

I've had a few stories knocking around in my head, I've wanted to write them for a while. Never got started, but these videos are helping me with sentence structure, as well as plenty of other things. It's making me want to actually get to writing it. In other news, you are a good birb.

Better art? The art you have right now is fantastic, You don't have to change a thing!

Thanks. All the art in the Book Burnings is drawn by me, but I would rather have it done by a professional artist. A personal friend of mine, Dragonfoxgirl, did the animated splash card for the review videos on this channel and I'd like to get her to replace my current set of poses that I use in these more analytical/editorial videos.
