My core young adult fantasy novels was a series called Ranger's Apprentice. Shit was insanely fire but also tortured me because there were plans to create a movie when I was a child and it's been stalled legitimately from my childhood through COVID and now seems to be cancelled.
@snipes9597 Жыл бұрын
Oh my god I thought that this part of my childhood was from a different dimension, I have literally never seen these books nor heard of anyone mentioning them to anyone since reading all 12 of the original books from my elementary school library. Great video again! I recommend tuning down the background music just a tad bit though as it was a lil loud, though it didn't detract from the experience. If you're into either grimdark or low-fantasy, the give Kings of Paradise a try. Absolutely my favorite fiction book of all time. There's 3 main characters but my favorite is Ruka. He's a boy who is born disfigured and considered a 'demon' in his culture. His mother runs away to the woods to raise him lovingly. He has a perfect memory. Like, literally perfect. As in, he remembers his own birth. He is able to recall every single word his mother has ever uttered to him, even when he didn't understand language. But, due to a series of unfortunate events, he grows to hate the world and swears to burn it all down. His powers all relate to his perfect memory and imagination in some way and it's very impressive how the character is able to experiment and stretch them to their limits. I'm trying to keep this all spoiler free, but here is the very first sentence of the book: "Ruka stared at the corpse of the boy he killed, and his stomach growled." Obviously if you're not into grimdark, it won't be for you, but it isn't edgy like other grimdark. There is a lot of hope in the book. The grimdark comes from how corrupt and terrible civilization currently is in their world, and the main characters are fighting it in some way or another. One of the other main characters actually lives in a completely different part of the world and doesn't meet or even know the other two exist until the second book (It's a trilogy). The overall plot between the 3 main characters is a slow burn, but each characters' story and world are so detailed and well crafted that they all could receive their own full length books. The first book is 600 pages, so they basically almost do

when he said the main character of Red Rising feels "overpowered" you can tell he hasn't read the second book because they fuck the main cast up. Sure the cast "wins" sometimes but it never feels like a true win because there are always consequences in future books. The amount of plot twists and devastating moments in the rest of the series is crazy, one of my favorite sci-fi series of all time.

You joke about One Piece, but it is peak fiction. No other story/series has touched me in the way One Piece can. It’s a long series, but reading the manga is stupid quick and you get to fully absorb all the details that may get left out in the show. The series “starts” at chapter 100, with the preceding 100 chapters building context. I think this fact alone could turn people off, but based on the other stories you said you enjoy, I have zero doubt you will enjoy everything the series has to offer. No other story has been able to tap into my emotions like One Piece has

I had AR growing up and was almost always at the top. I would honestly win most times, but once I hit hs, I would also do tests for movies I watched too. Didn't always work but usually did. I also moved right before hs, so I got to retake all the tests from past books Id read lol the prizes for being first/top 3 in each class were great, but it was always the same like 5 people per grade

KA Applegate had another series called Remnants that broke my brain as a young teen, a group of 100 people are selected to survive an imminent asteroid but lots of things go wrong. They end up on a “planet” that’s actually a massive spaceship, and a pregnant woman comes out of cryostasis with her baby outside of her and controlling her thoughts. Oh and the baby’s eyes melted out the moment it opened them for the first time. Horrifying stuff! Great!

Atrioc, I literally cannot recommend Brandon Sanderson enough. I don't know if you'll read this, though I hope you do, because you really shouldn't sleep on his books. He is far an away my favorite author, and absolutely blows George RR Martin out of the water. The Way of Kings is a great place to start. The world that that series takes place on is extremely complex and totally different to our ow. The worldbuilding for it is absolutely phenomenal too, since the planet has a complex ecology based around the storms that cross the continent. He also writes incredibly compelling characters. You jump between so many different people in the series, and you truly go in depth into their personalities and issues. And in terms of hype moments, there are some absolutely phenomenal ones, like fights high in the sky running across massive falling chunks of rock. And even though the characters do some amazing things, you never have the feeling that they are overpowered or without flaws. They gain their powers through taking pain that makes them want to die, and deciding to continue living, so even when they are incredibly skilled and powerful, they all have to fight their own internal demons that try to break them down. The ending of the third book is so hype that it genuinely made me cry. Everything happening was just so crazy and gripping, that I guess the only response that my body could do was activate my tear ducts. Plus, if The Stormlight Archive impresses you and makes you want to continue with his books, it's just a single series among many that take place in a shared universe called the Cosmere, with deep lore that explains why they have different magic systems and how everything works together. And in each of these worlds, the magic is treated as more of a science by some, and Brando put a lot of effort into constructing the universe and magic in a way that it works alongside the natural physics. It's more of an extra force alongside the ones we have in the real world, and he works with physicists to integrate it into the universe in such a way that it works in tandem with real physical laws. Because of this, the fans are actually extremely active in theorizing about different applications of the magic, because he writes it in such a structured way that you can actually fully understand it. It has the best community of fans out of any fantasy series imo, because if the high level of understanding that you can get, as well as the fact that he's still writing books for the Cosmere and will likely continue doing so far decades. Genuinely don't sleep on it. It's a masterclass in writing great high fantasy, with compelling characters and deep worldbuilding. Maybe fantasy isn't as much your thing, but if you liked A Song of Ice and Fire then you'll love Stormlight. And if you decide to read the rest of the Cosmere, it's a fantastic universe that you can really get lost in learning about. It's truly fantastic. Also, people will try and recommend Cosmere reading orders to you. Just ignore them. Sure, there are benefits to reading in a specific order, but don't let it become a chore. Just read it however you want, and if you like it enough, you can always read it again with the knowledge of other books, and see all the things that went over your head without you even knowing the first time around

It feels a little cringe to recommend it for some reason (maybe because it's like the main name that gets thrown around within its sub-genres constantly), but if you're into power fantasy but you also don't want the main character to have that Skyrim feel that was mentioned with Name of the Wind, I'd really recommend reading the Cradle series by Will Wight. It doesn't actually really get to the "power fantasy" aspect until like book 3 or 4 because the main character actually has to build himself up to being powerful and good at stuff, but you get little snippets of it. Plus it has an incredible supporting cast, and although I haven't listened to it myself, I know for a fact that the Audiobooks are really really well done as well.
