Brandon Sanderson graciously invited me to be a part of his "Yumi and the Nightmare Painter" book club. While we were there, I learned I would have the opportunity to make a video with Brandon. I love Brandon's work and have followed him closely for years. Listening to his podcast, watching his college lectures, and generally hero-worshipping him like so many others. I was going to ask him writing and worldbuilding questions, but when I really got down to it, I couldn't think of a single question to ask that I had not heard him answer countless times across his other content.
So my brain did what it does best, and my next idea was: How can I turn this into a bit?
I only had a few hours to prepare for the interview. I'm generally very comfortable in front of cameras and large audiences (I was a theater kid, I know, big shocker if you know anything about my personality). Needless to say, when I sat down on that couch to interview Brandon, I was terrified. I don't get nervous or embarrassed much these days from years of purposefully embarrassing myself for laughs. But I was beyond anxious about this interview. I couldn't help but fret about Brandon taking one of the jokes the wrong way, about offending this person I look up to so much.
"Between Two Ferns" is scripted. This video was not. I had questions to ask, but Brandon had no idea what they were going to be. He knew the show was in the vein of Between Two Ferns, so I told him to just play along, be himself, do whatever felt right in the moment so we'd get Brandon as himself having fun and playing along, rather than trying to do a specific character.
I was nervous when we sat down on the couch. But Brandon smiled and shook my hand and we talked for a few minutes and by the end, I felt much more at ease. I can't thank him enough for agreeing to do my silly video idea with me, for his encouragement, and for his compliments afterwards. It all meant the world to me. The one thing you have to know about Brandon is that he's a dad at heart. It comes through in all things he does. It comes through in the things he gets excited about, in the way he interacts with people, and the way he'll commit to the bit harder than anyone else. If you have to know one thing about Brandon, it's that he's genuine.
Thanks again for the interview, Brandad. I mean. Brandon. And thanks for your S-tier pun idea and suggesting that we steal two copies of "Dragonriders of Pern" from your library to use in the background. I can take zero credit for the name of the show. That was all Brandon. He should be a writer, or something.

Does John Scalzi have the guts to agree to an interview with publishing's hardest hitting interviewer? Will he agree to step on the infamous Lego trophy? Only one way to find out. x.com/JacksonDAuthor/status/1705260474005102621?s=20 The next episode of Between Two Perns is with bestselling author of "Legends and Lattes", Travis Baldree. It comes out September 29th, 2023.

Hamlet's Undulation: To Undulate, or not to undulate, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in mind to undulate The slings and arrows of outrageous undulation, Or to take undulation against a sea of undulating troubles And by opposing the undulated. To die- to undulate, No more: and by a undulated end The heart-ache and the thousands undulating shocks That flesh is heir to: 'tis an undulation Undulatingly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep; To sleep, undulated to dream-ay, there's the undulation For in that undulated death what hate may come, When we have undulated of this undulating coil, Undulation give us pause-there's the respect That makes Undulating of so long life. For who would undulate the whips and scorns of undulation, Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's undulation, The pangs of dispriz'd undulation, the law's delay, The undulating insolence of word hate, and the spurns That patient undulated merit of th'unworthy undulation, When herself might her undulating make With a bare undulation? Who would fardels hate, To undulate and be undulating under a weary life, But that the dread of undulation after death, The undiscovere'd undulation, from whose words No travellar undulates, undulating the will, And makes us undulate to bear those ill undulations Than fly to the undulators that we know of? Thus undulating conscience doth make undulators of us all, And thus native hue of undulation Is sicklied o'er with pale cast of undulation, And enterises of great undulators undulating With this regard their current undulation turn awry And lose the hate of the word undulate. Merphy's Undulated Haiku: I Hate Undulate Undulating Forever Undulation
