I remember my children's Bible when I was growing up, it had animals painted on the side like that. I hadn't thought about that in years! What a precious memory. Thank you.

when are you gonna do a DiY painted book edge tutorial (by any chance)?
@HollyDunnDesign7 жыл бұрын
It's something I'd love to do, but unfortunately it requires quite a lot of resources that I don't have at the moment. There are a few videos on KZbin about it if you search for 'painted fore-edges'.

I love it when you make these videos! I only have one book, "The Golem" which I bought second-hand, that has the edges painted in black, just like its cover, and I love the effect. I had never seen paintings on the edges like the ones you show though, those are fantastic! And that mushroom draw came out beautiful!!

Aw, what a great idea and your drawings are so cool! My new german edition of Harry Potter paperbacks have a spell written on the fore - edges, which appears when you bend it a bit. I think it was the first time I noticed something other than gilt edges.

how cool. I like the colored edges, always a good reason to pick up a book. I have quite a few with black pages and I think a yellow or bright orange one. And wicked I think is green. Sorry can't check, not near my books.

I recently read "Inkling" by Kenneth Oppel. It's a funny, smart book about an inkblot that gains sentience and independent movement. Along the fore edge of the book is a ragged black stripe formed by inkblots positioned on the verso pages of the book. Is there a technical term for such a stripe and, if so, what is it?

Awesome video! Love your series.=) I really like painted edges. But publishers in my area do it badly (pages are like glued together and in many cases a bit of paint goes into text zone. Which is ..not cool) . That's why I prefer foreign presses. Fore-edges fascinate me!!! I'm looking forward for more!=)
@HollyDunnDesign8 жыл бұрын
+Anna Shuk (ChicagoJFox) Thanks :) Another thing that I like about this technique is that you can tell when you're the first person to open a book because the pages are slightly stuck together. Perhaps not to the same extent as you're saying, but it gives me a little thrill! It's the little things :)

You forgot to mention that top edge only foiling was also commonly done. This made dusting the the books easier.
