The Seattle Public Library launched the 2013 Summer Reading Program by setting a new world record for the longest book domino chain!
The books used to make this domino chain were either donated or are out of date and no longer in the library's collection. They are now being sold by the Friends of Seattle Public Library to help raise money for library programs and services.
No books were harmed during the filming of this video.

You know you've worked at a library before when all you can think about while watching this is how long it'd take to shelve everything correctly again.

I just got a book in the mail today that I'd ordered used on Amazon and it had a sticker in it that said it was one of the books in this domino chain. That's what lead me to this video. It feels so cool to own a little piece of this accomplishment!

What a fun way to promote! This shows exactly the true purpose of libraries - it's a safe gathering place to promote the sense of community, not just a mere warehouse of books.

I thought that part was brilliant! Being so focused on what you're reading, while something so interesting is going on? That takes some dedication. I didn't see anyone turning a page, which would have made it a little more believable, but still, that was a great feature.

Library books take a LOT of punishment...and no books were hurt in the making of this video :) Books get carried for miles in the rain, some customers read them in the bath, some get chewed by dogs and babies, they get scribbled in, thumbed, and basically have a hard life, but at least it shows people are reading them! At home, I am very fussy about my books, but this was fun for the community- and did no harm.

Comments about books & libraries being passe almost always come from non-users. I work at a large urban library - the system includes 13 branches, and the downtown branch gets 2000 visitors per day. E-books and online resources are popular but our members still love real books. Even our teen readers often prefer paper over screen, depending on book genre. Libraries also function as community/meetup spaces - ours hosts numerous groups each week. Visit a library & check it out.

So add my book to your stack. I just sold someone from Seattle my military memoir named Accidental Ambassador. You see her husband and I served aboard the same ship called the USS Jason. The name I chose for my book was because as a wounded sailor, I spent a week aboard a Pakistani war ship. This was 1955. No one ever heard of Pakistan back then!

I remember when world records were actually an amazing feat. Now, you can take any obscure action and turn it into a world record. The concept of a world record nowadays is so diluted with ridiculous gimmicks, its hardly impressive. None the less, i understand this took a lot of time to plan, construct, and execute - so good job.

Since this is a world record, and there was a section of the domino chain that says, "READ," I am wondering if there was a logging of the books used in the chain, so that industrious readers looking for a challenge could try to read all of the books in the chain? :)

Q. Why would a library support this? A. The library didn't just support it, they did it. To draw attention to books and reading. Q. Why would you do this to books? A. See above. I don't think it harms the books in any way. It sounds like you don't like this idea and I'm curious to know why. The video is drawing a lot of attention. If it makes people aware of books, maybe they'll read some of them. Is that a bad thing?
