As a 90’s kid, LJ Smith was one of my absolute favorite childhood/preteen authors. It still kills me that she never finished her Night World Series, but I always loop back to her website every five years or so to check for updates. I finally acquired the last couple first editions of that series last year, and they have the most perfect pulp horror covers 😆

Growing up in the city, I had only had a small group of friends who would read horror books, and sort of obsess over them every library day. This brings back memories of running through the library to get the scariest book we could find, we would read and trade with a friend to read what they've borrowed. I'll have to check out some of these titles! Great video!

Great video, Cameron! Always fascinated to learn more about these sort of books because it's a reminder of how much I missed out on as a kid in the nineties who wasn't a reader. It's a tragedy, but there's also a certain charm to reading these kitschy tales as an old man. Also that Deadtime Stories cover gives me the heebie-jeebies now in my thirties so I can only assume it would have scared the living daylights out of me as a kid. I am, of course, immediately adding it to a wish list.

Have you ever read an author called Robert Cormier? As a '90s YA fan you might like him if you haven't. He was an American young adult writer who wrote more crime and psychological suspense novels than full on horror, though at least one involves a child turning invisible. He's notable for the darker and more socially thematic elements (he dealt with issues like mental illness, bullying, and family dysfunction) in his work, surprising for a YA writer. He wrote a very dark book in the '90s called Tenderness, about a teenage runaway who comes in contact with a teenager serial killer. He's most famous for The Chocolate War and Beyond the Chocolate War, about a boys' school run by a violent secret society of students.

The Books are about a family that move to new house (or rent it for vacation) and the twist is that a crazy old women/witch is living in the basement. she burns to death in the end. maybe this rings some bells, i´ve been searching for this a while now.
